  • General search:
    • The Boolean operator AND between the terms is assumed by default. If you enter the words European Union in the search box, the system returns all records in which both words occur, regardless of their order.
    • When entering a set of words in quotes, e.g "european union", all records containing the literal term "European Union" will be retrieved.
  • Search by access fields (e.g. author, title, etc.):
    • To direct your search, choose the field in which you want to search the word or expression.
    • Search in the field assumes by default the expression in quotes, e.g. European union will retrieve all records containing the literal term "European Union"
  • To perform more complex searches, additional words or expressions may be added.
  • If you want to refine the search results, you can always access the link "search" in the upper left corner of the page of search results.
  • The search engine is not case sensitive. For example, the word congress has the same meaning that Congress or CONGRESS.
  • To truncate your search expression, use the $ character
  • You can filter the results of your search by a date or date range, filling the appropriate boxes.

BIAL Foundation Archive
Start date: 1994
History:
The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A reinterpretation of experimental data on learning was used to formulate a law on data acquisition similar to the Hamiltonian of a mechanical system. A matrix of costs in decision making specifies values attributable to a barrier that opposed to hypothesis formation about decision making. The interpretation of the encoding costs as frequencies of oscillatory phenomena leads to a quantum paradigm based in the models of photoelectric effect as well as of a particle against a potential barrier. Cognitive processes are envisaged as complex phenomena represented by structures linked by valence bounds. This metaphor is used to find some prerequisites to certain types of conscious experience as well as to find an explanation for some pathological distortions of cognitive operations as they are represented in the context of the isolobal model. Those quantum phenomena are understood as representing an analogue programming for specific special purpose computations. The formation of complex chemical structures within the context of isolobal theory is understood as an analog quantum paradigm for complex cognitive computations.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
In a well controlled experimental situation, interpersonal relationships were studied using a double script model representation of the social situation that subjects were required to identify.
Results obtained in a group of normal volunteers subjects were analyzed. It is used an abductive model to describe the process of concept attainment by experimental subjects.
The interaction between partial attribute identifications and global characterizations of the simulated situations is described in the context of other psychological processes evoked by the interactions. A block diagram specifies the operations which are performed by a neural network model which implements the cognitive operations of a subject involved in the social interaction under study.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The author who is an expert in clinical psychiatry deals with the problem of modeling human Mind the way physicians implicitly use when their profession renders necessary to intervene to help or even cure patients.
If physicists, mathematicians or cognitive science specialists and engineers may propose artificial designs for a mind, psychiatrists and psychologists have developed reliable diagnostic systems for the classification of normal or else psychopathological states.
Usually in Psychiatry it is not made any use of an algorithmic approach to describe and characterize psychological processes during cognitive, perceptual, emotional, motivational processes or else anticipatory processes, distinct types of memory, learning processes, etc.
Differently from what is mentioned in Neuropsychological literature the author and his group were able to find a significant and consistent relationship between the level of ostensive expression of symptoms and competence in interpretation of information carried by verbal communication during the simulation of social interactions by restrict groups of experimenters.
Furthermore it is shown how dendro-dendritic models of neural processing are adequate to represent symbolic processes performed by local operators in the Cortex, as well as the usefulness of models of chemical reactors either batch reactors or else flow plug reactors to represent virtual neural networks capable of clarifying some aspects of cognition and of the structure of the Self.
Finally many episodes of the life of the late Warren Sturgis McCulloch are recalled as attribute of gratitude of the author who was his before the last student.
