Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
The term “psychometry” describes a type of anomalous cognition (or extrasensory perception, ESP) which permits a psychic (sensitive or seer) to receive impressions using a physical object as inductor to express the information perceived. A sample was recruited by us, that is people who say they possess such abilities, such as persons who have had spontaneous extrasensory experience, and persons who believe although they had not had those experiences.
The psychological evaluation included: Sixteen Personality Factors, Dissociative Experiences Scale, Eysenck Personality Inventory, Anomalous Experiences Inventory, and Paranormal Beliefs Scale to correlate their psychological characteristics. Subjects who reported high scored Experiences measured by AEI were indicative of high DES scores and high Extraversion?s EPI scores. Besides, four parapsychological tests were administered. Objects-target were used in order to obtain statements and all other information relevant during the session.
We obtained psi-hitting in the free-response test (no-object). We believe that this was the most comprehensible of the four ESP tests. This test adds emotional and motivational additional, as compared with the psychometric tests, that may facilitate the ESP. Almost half of the sample (56.3%) manifests not to have control over psi. In addition, 65.2% of the sample manifests not to have attempted ever to control psi, not even once in their lives. The purpose of a quantitative evaluation of the psychics? statements is to establish if these statements are more accurate than expected by chance when compared to other two groups (non-psychics claimants). Analysis post hoc will be published elsewhere.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Research into psychometry, the ability often claimed by psychics to obtain impressions about people from objects that they have owned, has mostly been limited to qualitative analysis because of problems in evaluating free-response material. To date, there has been little interest in exploring psychometry among ordinary people. In this study, a psychometry-based strategy for obtaining ESP hits, using personal objects, was assessed in conjunction with a non-psychometric strategy using picture stimuli in sealed envelopes. Four volunteers served as ‘target persons’ who carried identical objects with them for fifteen days. Seventy-one participants recruited through advertisements then obtained impressions from the token-object and from a picture sealed in an envelope. The target persons blind-scored the participants’ statements. A similar procedure was employed in the non-psychometry condition, a free-response test using visual imagery. The non-psychometry condition resulted in higher scores than those obtained in the psychometry condition (p = 0.006). We conclude that this experiment offers some support for the claim that stimulation of visual imagery is more productive of psi than the use of token objects, at least among ordinary people. It may well be that psychometry involves more complex cognitive processes than we have yet considered.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Psychometry is the process by which a psychic or sensitive claims to be able to receive impressions about a person or event using a ‘token-object’ as inductor or instrument. In this study we investigated whether there were significant differences between ‘psychic’ and ‘non-psychic’ people — as measured on an extrasensorial experiences and abilities questionnaire — in their ability to gain accurate impressions using a token object. Seventy-four participants (age range 18–78; M = 48.23; SD = 14.53) were recruited through media advertisements. The experimenters employed blind coding and recoding procedures, and let the participants touch the objects to obtain impressions. Six trials were completed. Participants were categorised as either psychic, ‘ESP skilled’ (N = 44), or non-psychic, ‘ESP experients’ (N = 30). The ESP skilled group scored higher psi-hitting than the ESP experients group, who scored at the level of mean chance expectation. The difference between groups was significant (z = 1.73; p = 0.041, one-tailed). It can be concluded that those participants claiming an ESP ability tended to obtain higher psi-hitting in the forced-choice response test (using a token-object) than those claiming only ESP experiences. Further data analysis revealed high variability between the two groups: participants who claimed ESP abilities generally obtained higher psi-hitting, whereas, among the participants who claimed ESP experiences, some scored high psi-hitting, others high psi-missing.

ABSTRACT:
There are reliable statistical relationships between hypnotic susceptibility, psychological dissociation, and paranormal experiences. We hypothesized that subjects with greatest hypnotic susceptibility would report the most paranormal experiences. Similarly, we expected that persons with the most dissociative experiences would report the most paranormal experiences. We also hoped to find interactions between hypnotic susceptibility and dissociation with paranormal experiences. We administered the Anomalous Experiences Inventory (AEI), the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) and the Harvard Group Scale (HGS) of hypnotic susceptibility to 67 subjects (73.1% female, 26.9% male), believers in a variety of paranormal events and motivated by their own experiences. A factor analysis showed an interaction between hypnotic susceptibility and dissociation. In subjects with little hypnotic susceptibility we found that dissociation strongly favored paranormal experiences. However, for those subjects scoring medium and medium-high on hypnotic susceptibility, the effect of dissociation was lost. In highly susceptible subjects, the effect was even reversed. Subjects scoring low and medium-low on dissociation but high on hypnotic susceptibility reported more paranormal experiences (r= .458). Subjects scoring high or medium-high on dissociation but high on hypnotic susceptibility reported fewer paranormal experiences (r= .358).

Psychometry is an anomalous cognition system for psi-detection. For example, psychics have often claimed to have the ability to obtain “impressions” about people from objects that they have owned. Many authors have suggested explanations for psychometry, which are in line with Roll´s “psi field.” Research has mostly been limited to qualitative analysis because psychometry is very difficult to research due to problems in evaluating “free response” material. To date, there has been little interest in the exploration of psychometry among “ordinary” people. In this study, psychometry-based experimental research and ESP hits were compared with visual images to assess strategies. “Psychometric” and “non-psychometric” procedures were counterbalanced. Seventy one unselected, ordinary people (age range= 18-77; Mean= 46.44; SD= 14.03) were recruited as participants by announcements. All participants underwent the two conditions of the psi experiment: the use of token-object and visual images. Test instructions were given to both participants and target persons. Four volunteers carried identical objects with them for fifteen days. Blind coding and recoding procedures were used by the experimenters. Participants “touched” four objects for impressions and completed four trials. Target persons blind scored the participant´s statements. A similar procedure was employed for the free-response test (visual). Targets for both the visual test and the token-objects, were randomly assigned. The non-psychometry condition (p= .005) resulted in higher scores than those obtained in the psychometry condition. The difference between both target conditions (no-psychometry vs. psychometry) was also significant (z-score= 2.65, p= .008, two-tailed). We conclude that this experiment offers some support for the claim that visual image stimulation is more psi-conducive, presumably at least among ordinary people. Psi seems to work better using visual imagery than in a “token object” condition. It may well be that the anomalous cognition with psychometry is a more complex cognitive process than we have considered it to be.

Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The term “psychometry” is a type of extrasensory perception which allows a “psychic claimants” or “sensitive” to receive impressions using a physical object. One hundred fifty seven subjects were interviewed, but 120 took part at this research project, both sexes 67% females and 33% males (age
range 18–78; Mean= 46.48; SD= 14.05). The research project explored if susceptibility hypnosis, dissociation scores and personality characteristics, such as extroversion, neuroticism and the sixteen factors scores of the 16PF correlated with psi-scores of both groups, subjects who claim psiability (called “psi-abilitiers”) and subjects who claim psi-experiences (psi-experiencers), re-clustered using the Anomalous Experiences Inventory (AEI). Both groups were tested by four psi-tests: (1) four objects-target were used in order to obtain (a) free statements compared with (b) forced choise (anatomical or physical characteristics) response tests. The results were evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively; (2) personality tests pooled were used to obtain personality profiles (high and low extroversion and neuroticism scores combined) in order to design an ESP test using name and surname; and (3) “psychometry” test was compared with a “nonpsychometry” test (objects vs. pictures-target). The purpose of a quantitative evaluation of the psychics’ statements is to establish if these statements are more accurate than expected by chance. Statistical data of the psi tests are being proccesed. Briefly, our results showed that psiabilitiers claim to be very spiritual, had many psi experiences, scored high extraversion and they are dominant and self-sufficient.
