The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Near-death experiences (NDEs) reported by those who have been in life-threatening situations may include a sense observing surroundings from a visual perspective outside of the physical body. Research into out-of-body perceptions during NDEs has been hindered by lack of control over the conditions at the time of the NDE.
Patients with potentially fatal cardiac illness often have implantable cardioverters/defibrillators (ICDs) surgically implanted in their chests, electrical devices that monitor the heartbeat and, in the event of a cardiac arrest, automatically administer an electrical shock to return the heart to normal rhythm. After ICD implantation, a cardiac arrest is induced to test the lCD, exposing the patient to the opportunity to experience an NDE under controlled circumstances.
We placed a computer in the operating room that displayed randomly-selected unusual visual targets visible only from a perspective looking down upon the body of the unconscious patient. In interviews with patients before and after implantation of the lCD, we determined the incidence ofNDEs during induced cardiac arrest, and whether patients could report accurate observations from an out-of-body perspective.
In a series of 52 induced cardiac arrests, no patient reported having had a near-death experience, and none reported a sense of having left the physical body or observing from an out-of-body visual perspective. In retrospect, reassurance to the patients that they were not in danger may have reduced the likelihood ofNDEs; the brief duration of the induced cardiac arrest may have precluded the development of an NDE; and the pre-anesthetic sedative medication used may have interfered with memory of any experience.

Persons reporting near-death experiences (NDEs) sometimes describe a sense of having been out of their bodies and observing their surroundings from a visual perspective outside of and above their bodies. We attempted to study such phenomena during the surgical implantation of automatic implantable cardioverters/defibrillators (ICDs), electrical devices that monitor the patient’s heartbeat and automatically detect cardiac arrest and administer an electrical shock to return the heart to normal rhythm. When ICDs are implanted in a patient’s chest, cardiac arrest is induced under closely monitored conditions, in order to test the ICD’s sensitivity and effectiveness. This study was designed to investigate the accuracy of out-of-body perceptions duringNDEs that occur during these induced cardiac arrests. A computer in the operating room displayed quasi-randomly-selected unusual visual targets so that they were visible only from above eye level, from a visual perspective looking down upon the body of the unconscious patient. In a series of 52 induced cardiac arrests, no patient reported having had a near-death experience, and none reported a sense of having left the physical body or observing from an out-of-body visual perspective. This failure to find a single NDE in 52 induced cardiac arrests may have been due to preoperative reassurances that patients would not be in danger of dying, the brief duration of the induced cardiac arrest, or the amnestic effects of pre-anesthetic sedative medication.
