Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Most mothers had a moderate to high bonding toward the infant from pregnancy
to 3 months after childbirth, nonetheless maternal bonding was generally better
immediately after childbirth - higher positive bonding and total bonding means and
lower negative bonding scores - than during pregnancy or at 3 months postpartum.
During pregnancy, mood but not hormones influenced maternal bonding. Mothers
with depressive mood had lower positive bonding results, higher negative bonding
results as well as higher not clear bonding results. Mothers with higher anxiety levels
had less positive bonding results, more negative bonding results and showed a worse
total bonding.
In the first days after childbirth, both mood and hormones influenced maternal
bonding. Mothers with higher cortisol levels had a better bonding toward the infant,
mothers with depressive mood had lower positive bonding results and mothers with
higher anxiety levels had more negative bonding results.
At 3 months after childbirth, again mood but not hormones influenced maternal
bonding. Depressed mothers showed more negative emotions and not clear emotions
and had a worse bonding toward the infant, as well as mothers with higher anxiety
showed more negative bonding results and more not clear bonding results and a worse
bonding with the infant. No differences are found regarding cortisol levels.
We conclude that psycho-physiological more than obstetrical factors seem to interfere
in maternal bonding both during pregnancy and after childbirth. This fact leads us to
think about the importance of attending to maternal mood in clinical context starting
during pregnancy through the first months after childbirth in order to guarantee the
mothers’ and infants’ quality of life.

Prevalência e preditores de sintomatologia depressiva após o parto

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A depressão pós-parto é uma patologia que ocorre nas primeiras semanas após o parto com conseqüências negativas não só para a mãe, como também para o bebê e para a família. Objetivo: Examinar a prevalência de depressão após o parto, bem como as circunstâncias suscetíveis de predizer a sintomatologia depressiva 1 semana e 3 meses após o parto. Métodos: 197 grávidas preencheram o Questionário de Antecipação do Parto (QAP) (Costa et al., 2005a) no segundo trimestre de gestação. Na primeira semana após o parto, responderam ao Questionário de Experiência e Satisfação com o Parto (QESP) (Costa et al., 2005b) e à Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) (Augusto et al., 1996), esta última aplicada novamente no terceiro mês do puerpério. Resultados: Uma percentagem significativa de mulheres encontra-se clinicamente deprimida (EPDS = 13) na primeira semana e 3 meses após o parto (12,4% e 13,7%, respectivamente). Das que têm EPDS = 13 na primeira semana, 25% estão ainda deprimidas 3 meses após o parto. Circunstâncias relativas à saúde física, à experiência emocional de parto e ao primeiro contato com o bebê predizem a sintomatologia depressiva na primeira semana do puerpério. A sintomatologia depressiva na primeira semana após o parto e a experiência emocional negativa de parto predizem a sintomatologia depressiva 3 meses após o parto. Conclusões: Constata-se a importância da experiência emocional de parto e do primeiro contato com o bebê, enfatizando a necessidade de atender às necessidades psicológicas da mulher.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Este artigo apresenta a construção e validação do "Questionário de Experiência e Satisfação com o Parto" (QESP), destinado a avaliar a experiência e satisfação da mulher com o parto (preocupações, sentimentos, relaxamento, cuidados e condições disponíveis, dor, satisfação e confirmação de expectativas prévias, bem como suporte por parte de significativos durante o parto).
O QESP foi administrado a uma amostra de 306 mulheres nos primeiros 5 dias do pós-parto, das quais 103 realizaram uma medida repetida do instrumento e preencheram a "Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale" (EPDS) aos 3 meses de vida do bebé.
A Análise Hierárquica de Clusters permitiu identificar 8 sub-escalas que compõem o questionário: (1) condições e cuidados prestados, (2) experiência positiva, (3) experiência negativa, (4) relaxamento, (5) suporte, (6) suporte do companheiro, (7) preocupações e (8) pós-parto.
O estudo psicométrico mostra que o QESP tem muito boa consistência interna (Alpha de Cronbach=0,90, Coeficiente de Split-half=0,68), é fidedigno (Teste-Reteste=0,58) e possui boa validade preditiva em relação à posterior ocorrência de depressão pós-parto.
Por permitir a identificação de experiências de parto menos positivas, susceptíveis de se traduzirem em dificuldades de ajustamento após o parto, o QESP é um instrumento que pode revelar-se útil para os técnicos e investigadores da área da saúde reprodutiva.

While infant attachment has been largely studied, parental attachment is still relatively unknown, especially when referred to fathers. However, it is mainly recognised that parents’ emotional involvement with the newborn contributes to the quality of the interaction and the care they provide. The aim of this study was to study mother-to-infant and father-to-infant initial emotional involvement; namely, differences between mothers and fathers and changes in mother’s emotions toward the neonate within the first days after delivery. The Bonding Scale, an extended Portuguese version of the ‘New Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale’, was administered during the first two days after childbirth to a sample of 315 mothers and 141 fathers (n = 456), at the Júlio Dinis Maternity Hospital (Portugal). Most mothers and fathers show positive emotions and only a few of them showed negative emotions toward the infant. Maternal and paternal emotional involvement toward the newborn tend to be similar; nevertheless, fathers show less fear and better emotional involvement with the neonate, while mothers are sadder and show more emotions not related to bonding. During the first days following delivery, emotions not related to bonding, such as fear, seem to decrease in mothers.

Objectives - To study mother-to-infant emotional involvement at birth, namely factors (socio-demographics, previous life events, type of delivery, pain at childbirth, support from partner, infant characteristics, early experiences with the newborn, and mother's mood) that interfere with the mother's positive, negative and not clear emotions toward the newborn.
Methods - The Bonding Scale (an extended Portuguese version of the 'New Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale') and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale were administrated during the first after delivery days to 315 mothers recruited at Júlio Dinis Maternity Hospital (MJD, Porto, Portugal).
Results - A worse emotional involvement with the newborn was observed when the mother was unemployed, unmarried, had less than grade 9, previous obstetrical/psychological problems or was depressed, as well as when the infant was female, had neonatal problems or was admitted in the intensive care unit. Lower total bonding results were significantly predicted when the mother was depressed and had a lower educational level; being depressed, unemployed and single predicted more negative emotions toward the infant as well. No significant differences in the mother-to-infant emotional involvement were obtained for events related to childbirth, such as type of delivery, pain and partner support, or early experiences with the newborn; these events do not predict mother's bonding results either.
Conclusion - The study results support the need for screening and supporting depressed, unemployed and single mothers, in order to prevent bonding difficulties with the newborn at birth.

Depression during pregnancy and the postpartum period in adolescent and adult Portuguese mothers

Objective - To study prevalence as well as risk factors for pregnancy and postpartum depression in a sample of adolescent and adult Portuguese mothers.
Methods - The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was administered to 108 (54 adult and 54 adolescent) Portuguese women at 24-36 weeks of pregnancy and at 2-3 months postpartum.
Results - Rates for EPDS > 12 are high during the 3(rd) trimester of pregnancy (18.5%) and at 2-3 months postpartum (17.6%), and not significantly different between these two periods; more than 1/4 of the sample (27.8%) had an EPDS > 12 before or after delivery. Adolescent mothers presented more depressive symptoms as well as more EPDS > 12 than adult mothers, both in pregnancy (25.9% versus 11.1%) and at 2-3 months postpartum (25.9% versus 9.3%); moreover, when considering other socio-demographics, adolescent mothers were still at risk for depressive symptoms during pregnancy as well as for postpartum depression. Women depressed in pregnancy, and ones who are under 18 years old and who live with the partner, were at risk for postpartum EPDS > 12.
Conclusion - Adolescent mothers seem particularly at risk for depression during pregnancy and the postpartum period, therefore, just like the women who are depressed during pregnancy, they should be better targeted in preventive and intervention measures.

With the aim of studying anxiety, depression and prenatal emotional involvement with the infant, 87 primiparous women had fulfilled the Portuguese version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and New Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale. High levels of anxious and depressive symptoms as well of emotional involvement with the infant were found. Anxiety seems to activate mother’s negative emotions toward the infant, but depressive symptoms account the more for the presence of not clear emotions and poor attachment to the infant.

Recently implemented social and technological changes have several implications
for the parental behavior toward the baby, but its repercussions on the parental emotional
involvement and care still need to be investigated. Maternal attachment toward the infant, a
unique emotional long-term relationship, gradually established from the mother’s first contact
with the baby, is a process of mutual adaptation in which the mother and the baby actively
participate, as the present article clarify. This theoretical study is essentially aimed to the fundamental
question of “what may stimulate or promote the parental attachment with the baby?”.
It intents to implement our knowledge about the dimensions involved on the initial parental
attachment with the baby, particularly to light out the importance of the hormonal factors, as
the contribution of these have not be sufficiently tacked in account on the maternal attachment
process. More factors are also considered, such as: the type of delivery, the delivery pain and
the methods used to reduce it, the mother-infant separation at birth, and the newborn’s interactive
competency and availability.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Although child attachment toward the parents has been largely studied, we still have a lot to know about how parents attach to infants. Nevertheless, the literature has been highlighting for so long that the parents’ emotional involvement is a determinant factor in the quality of the interaction and the care that they provided to the child. This study investigates the parents’ initial emotional bonding toward the newborn, attending to 3 main objectives: (1) to describe parents’ emotional involvement with the infant in the first postpartum week, (2) to analyse differences in the initial emotional bonding, between mothers and fathers; 3) to evaluate changes in the mother’s emotional involvement with the infant during the first postpartum week. The Bonding Scale (Figueiredo, Marques, Costa, Pacheco, & Pais, 2004) was administrated to 150 mothers, 24 hours after the delivery, and to 315 mothers and 141 fathers (N=456), at 1 to 2 days postpartum (at the Júlio Dinis Maternity Hospital. Porto). The results show that in the week following the delivery, most mothers and fathers report: (1) high positive emotional involvement (71% and 73%, respectively); (2) at least one emotion not clearly related with bonding (76% and 70.9%, respectively); (3) no negative emotions toward the infant (although some negative emotional involvement is present in 21% of the mothers and 16.3% of the fathers). Results also show that 48 hours after delivery mother’s and father’s emotional involvement toward the newborn is not so different, but mothers feel significantly more sad, possessive and fearful, and in general have more emotions not clearly related with bonding as well as worse bonding than fathers. The results also show that mothers are significantly less fearful in the presence of the infant at day 2 than at day 1, and emotions not clearly related with bonding tend to decrease in the first following delivery days. We conclude that in the first week after childbirth, (1) most mothers and fathers have high positive involvement, at least one emotion not clearly related with bonding, low or absent negative emotional involvement with the infant. (2) Fathers have a better initial bonding with the newborn than mothers. (3) In a very short period of time (1 day) slightly positive changes in the quality of the mother’s emotions toward the child can be observed. We also conclude that studying the parents’ emotional involvement with the baby and considering the conditions that might benefit the mother’s and father’s emotional involvement, in the moments that follow childbirth, are very important issues.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.

Mother’s Stress, Mood and Emotional Involvement with the Infant: 3 months before and after childbirth

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Adverse effects of maternal anxiety and depression are well documented, namely on the foetus/child behaviour and development, but not as much attention has been given to the mother's emotional involvement with the offspring. To study mother's prenatal and postpartum stress, mood and emotional involvement with the infant, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and the Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale were filled in and cortisol levels were measured, 3 months before and 3 months after childbirth, in a sample of 91 Portuguese women. From pregnancy to the postpartum period, mother's cortisol levels, anxiety and emotional involvement toward the child decrease. No significant change was observed regarding mother's depression. Mother's depression predicted a worse emotional involvement before childbirth, while mother's anxiety predicted a worse emotional involvement with the infant after childbirth. Additionally, pregnant women with a worse emotional involvement with the offspring are at risk of poorer emotional involvement with the infant and higher anxiety and depression at 3 months postpartum. It should be given more attention to mother's poor emotional involvement with the offspring during pregnancy, as it interferes with her emotional involvement with the infant and her psychological adjustment 3 months after childbirth.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Neste artigo apresentamos a escala Bonding destinada a avaliar o envolvimento emocional dos pais com o bebé; versão portuguesa alargada do Mother-Baby Bonding Questionnaire (Taylor, Adams, Doré, Kumar, & Glover, in press). A versão original do instrumento, constituída por 8 itens de auto-relato numa escala de tipo "Lickert" de 4 pontos, foi traduzida e acrescentada; uma nova versão de 12 itens foi administrada, entre o 2º e o 3º dia após o parto, a uma amostra de 456 sujeitos (315 mães e 141 pais), dos quais 151 mães tinham já sido avaliadas nas primeiras 24 horas pós-parto. A análise hierárquica de clusters indica que os itens da escala de Bonding são susceptíveis de se organizarem satisfatoriamente em três subescalas: a sub-escala "Bonding Positivo", constituída por 3 itens, mede o envolvimento emocional positivo; a sub-escala "Bonding Negativo", constituída por 6 itens, avalia o envolvimento emocional negativo: a sub-escala "Bonding not Clear" constituída por 3 itens, sinaliza a presença de emoções não claramente relacionadas com o envolvimento emocional dos pais com o bebé. O estudo psicométrico do instrumento mostra índices razoáveis de consistência interna (com um Alpha de Cronbach de 0.4471 e um Coeficiente de Bipartição de 0.5256) e de fidelidade teste-reteste (com um Coeficiente de Correlação de Spearman de 0.491). A escala Bonding revela ser um instrumento moderadamente robusto que embora não preencha critérios de excelência, oferece índices satisfatórios de fidelidade e validade. Está agora à disposição dos investigadores e clínicos portugueses interessados em avaliar a qualidade do envolvimento emocional dos pais com o bebé.
