Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Study 1 compared success rates of ‘live’ receivers and an RNG analogue. During a ‘standard’ autoganzfeld sending period, a ‘virtual’ receiver (an RNG) selected from among 768 statements that described all clips in a pool of 96 videos (8 for each clip). The 8 most frequently selected were given to an independent judge as a ‘virtual mentation’. The ‘live’ receiver correctly identified the target on 14 trials (35% hit rate; MCE = 25%), significantly better than chance (sum of ranks Z = 1.77, p = .038). Virtual mentations gave an encouraging 13 hits (32.5%; SOR Z = 1.48, p = .069). Study 2 compared sender and no-sender trials. Receivers scored at chance, slightly better in sender trials than no sender trials (26.1% versus 23.5%). Two independent judges using the virtual mentation produced hit rates of 30.6% and 16.7%; both gave non-significantly higher hit rates for the sender trials than for the no sender trials (42.1% versus 17.6%; 26.3% versus 5.9%), indicative of a sender effect. Study 3 manipulated target lability, comparing a true RNG, the PC’s pseudorandom function
and a pre-generated set of random numbers. We did not recruit ‘live’ receivers, but accurately briefed participants about the study and gave immediate feedback. Significant psi hitting was not obtained in any single condition, but there was a predicted interaction effect between target and sender lability, (F4, 74 = 4.959, p = .001); ‘stable’ senders gave highest psi hitting with the most labile target system, while labile senders showed the reverse. This effect was replicated in Study 4 (F4,74 = 2.747, p = .034), which also found a trend supporting a predicted interaction between feedback and sending strategy (F = (1,36) = 3.061, p = .053).

In recent work to evaluate the sender's role in successful ganzfeld GESP experiments, we have used a random number generator (RNG) as a ?virtual receiver? in a ganzfeld-like experiment. During the sending period, statements are ?selected? from a pool of items to give an ?ENG mentation? to be used by an independent judge. After early success in demonstrating the basic effect, later work has explored the effects of the lability of the target selection method (random number table, pseudorandom process, and live RNG) and of the participant (high, intermediate, or low, based on a composite measure) and found a predicted interaction effect between these factors. The present study was designed to confirm that finding and extend it by exploring a putative interaction effect between sending strategy (active/willing versus passive/absorbed) and feedback type (delayed versus immediate). Forty participants generated virtual readings consisting of 24 statements, 8 from each of the 3 selection methods. A significant interaction was found between target lability and sender lability, replicating our earlier effect. Although the interaction effect between sending strategy and feedback type was nonsignificant, a predicted significant effect of feedback for participants in the willing strategy condition was found.

It is not straightforward to determine whether a sender makes an active contribution to the success of ESP experiments. Although there does seem to be a subtle advantage for telepathy experiments over equivalent clairvoyant studies (see, e.g., Honorton, 1995; Ullman & Krippner, 1973), this might be explicable in simple psychological terms, such as the sharing of responsibility for failures (and successes) at a psi task and the calming effects of having a friend accompany one to an unusual and potentially anxiety provoking situation (Morris, Dalton, Delanoy & Watt, 1995). In earlier papers we described a novel method that promised to provide a more direct assessment of any sender contribution (Roe & Holt, 2005; Roe, Holt, & Simmonds, 2003) by introducing a "virtual receiver" in the form of a random number generator (RNG). The output of the RNG was associated with a collection of 768 statements that had been coined to describe the clips in the target pool. During the normal sending period the RNG was continually sampled and a "virtual mentation" was produced that consisted of the 20 statements corresponding to the numbers that had been selected most often. Independent judges then used the virtual mentations to rank order four video clips (the target clip and three decoys) in much the same way as the receiver typically does in a conventional free-response ESP study. The participants did not see the virtual mentation at any point.

In this study we were concerned to evaluate whether the sender plays any active role in successful ganzfeld GESP experiments by comparing sender and no-sender conditions. In a replication of Roe, Holt, & Simmonds' (2003) novel method, during the sending period receivers generated a mentation based on their experiences in ganzfeld and simultaneously a random number generator (RNG) acted as a proxy receiver by "selecting" statements from among a pool of 768 to give a 20-item "RNG mentation." Forty ganzfeld trials were conducted with novice sender-receiver pairs, of which 23 involved senders and 17 did not. Receivers registered a 25% overall hit rate, equal to mean chance expectation, with slightly better performance in sender trials than no-sender trials (26.1% versus 23.5%). Two independent judges used the RNG mentation to rank order the clips in each target set and produced hit rates of 30.6% and 16.7%. Both independent judges gave higher hit rates for the sender trials than for the no-sender trials (42.1% versus 17.6%, 26.3% versus 5.9%), though these differences were not significant. None of a number of individual differences measures significantly predicted receiver performance, and indeed none were suggestive (p <.1).

Previous ganzfeld research that has considered the role of the sender has been inconsistent in its findings and may be criticised for not taking sufficient account of the sender--receiver relationship. This study used a novel method for assessing any sender influence. A random event generator (REG) placed in the vicinity of the receiver acted as a proxy receiver during the sending period, "selecting" descriptive statements from among a pool of 768. Twenty statements were selected to produce an "REG mentation" that was compared with the performance of the "live" receiver. Forty ganzfeld trials were conducted with novice sender--receiver pairs using a standard protocol apart from the introduction of the REG. Receivers registered a 35% hit rate. The REG mentation was used by an independent judge to rank order the clips in each target set and gave rise to a suggestive hit rate of 32.5%. None of a battery of individual differences measures significantly predicted receiver performance but there was a sign ificant relationship between sender synaesthesia rating and REG performance. The effect size for the REG trials compares favourably with that for other micro PK protocols, and further research is encouraged.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Despite the relative success of clairvoyance designs in eliciting evidence for ESP when used with other protocols (see, e.g., reviews by Rhine, Pratt, Stuart, Smith & Greenwood, 1966, and Utts, 1996), it has been commonly assumed that a sender can make some positive contribution to the outcome of Ganzfeld studies. Relatively few Ganzfeld experiments have adopted a clairvoyance design except where the objective of the study was to compare sender and no sender conditions. Honorton (1995) found that of 73 Ganzfeld studies only 12 did not employ senders. His meta-analysis comparing sender and no sender experiments showed that those including senders generated better performance than those that did not, although the effect seemed to be confined to those experimenters who had used both conditions at some time. If it could be shown that the sender were unnecessary this would have practical advantages in that sessions would be easier to co-ordinate for only one participant at a time, and security would be more straightforward, since no person need know the identity of the target until after the participant’s judgements had been recorded.
Eight previous Ganzfeld studies have directly compared sender and no sender conditions within the same study (Dunne, Warnock & Bisaha, 1977; Kanthamani & Khilji, nd, described in Kanthamani & Palmer, 1993; Milton, 1988-9; Morris, Dalton, Delanoy & Watt, 1995; Raburn & Manning, 1977; Roe, Sherwood & Holt, 2003; Sargent, Milton, Payne & Bennet, unpub, cited in Milton, 1988-9; Williams, Roe, Upchurch, & Lawrence, 1994). Taken together, the findings from these studies offer some support for the suggestion that the sender serves some active role in a typical Ganzfeld ESP session.
These findings may be particularly encouraging given that the experimental manipulations of the IV here are rather gross, for example in not systematically taking into account the possible moderating effect of variables such as the sender-receiver relationship. The designs also tend to assume that any sender effect will be readily apparent in the receiver’s overall performance, despite this relationship being dependent upon the receiver not only being able to detect any sender mediated impressions, but also to accurately interpret them and to be able to discriminate them from internally generated ‘noise’ during judging. Recently we reported on an alternative method for gauging any potential sender effect (Roe, Holt & Simmonds, 2003) that promised to circumvent such complications by replacing the receiver with an REG ‘virtual receiver’ that would generate a virtual mentation by randomly selecting statements from among an array of descriptors. The virtual mentation was then used by an independent judge to rate the four target clips in the set just as the receiver had done with their own mentation. In that study, the ‘live’ receiver selected the correct clip as the target on 14 occasions (35% hit rate where MCE is 25%), and by pre-planned sum-of-ranks analysis performed significantly better than chance expectation (Z = 1.77, p = .038). More interestingly in the present discussion, the ratings based on the REG-generated virtual mentations gave an encouraging 13 hits (32.5%), and a suggestive sum-of-ranks outcome (Z = 1.48, p = .069). These results were regarded as sufficiently promising to warrant further investigation. In the present study we planned to compare performance of the REG on sender trials with performance on trials when there was no sender (or at least where a nominal sender was unaware of the target). In this case the mentation would presumably consist of random noise and might provide a more suitable control against which to evaluate performance in the experimental condition. In this talk we would report on the results of this study and overview suggestions for future work.
