Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
"Toh-ate" is a traditional Japanese martial art requiring special skill of its practitioners. Toh-ate is a non-contact attack by one person against another when the two are separated at a distance. In our previous studies with qigong or martial arts practitioners, a few exceptional subjects showed anomalous signal transmission in time coincidence of subjects' motions or physiological change even if in two separated rooms with each in a double blinded condition (Yamamoto et al. 1996, Chen et al. 2002.). In the present study, we researched the generality of this phenomenon by examining responses of plural veteran pairs. Subjects were 3 pairs of trainees of Japanese martial arts and 3 pairs of trainees of Chinese qigong. As control, 6 other pairs participated; these persons had no martial arts training. Receiver and Sender were put in separate rooms with communicational deprivation. The Receiver was seated in a Faraday cage and the Sender performed only one sending motion per 80-sec trial on double blinded and randomized conditions. The timing of each subject’s motions and physiological factors were recorded. Physiological analyses showed that no anomalous changes of the average gradient of skin temperature of the Receiver's palm were observed around the sending time. Also there was no difference between practitioners of the Japanese and Chinese arts. Regarding time coincidence, Japanese martial arts subjects showed no anomalous results although 4 of them were considered to have abilities for toh-ate to some degree (Kokubo et al. 2003). Two pairs of Chinese qigong practitioners showed 5% significance peaks at +11 sec, but no anomalous peak at 0 sec.
The results suggested that it is difficult to get good results if subjects do not have a sufficient career in a particular martial art or qigong school.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The present experiments focus on the skills involved in the traditional Japanese martial art called "toh-ate". Toh-ate is a non-contact attack by one person against another when the two are separated by some distance. For the experiments, 6 pairs of veteran practitioners of martial arts participated. Three pairs were practitioners of Japanese martial arts and the other pairs were practitioners of Chinese qigong. As control, 6 pairs (non-trainees) participated; these persons had no martial arts training. Two subjects of a pair were put in separate rooms with communicational deprivation and the experimenters measured physiological changes of one of the two, acting as a Receiver, when the other, acting as a Sender, attempted to make a remote attack on the Receiver at a distance. The Receiver was seated in a Farady cage and the Sender performed only one "sending" motion per 80-second trial on double blinded and randomized conditions. When the Sender or Receiver pushed a switch as the event marker, output signals were produced. The signals were recorded as the sending time or the response time, along with physiological data, by recorders. No anomalous changes of average gradient of skin temperature of the Receiver's palm were observed around the sending time. Totally 797 data were available for analyses of time coincidence between motions of the Sender and Receiver. There was no significant coincidence at time-difference is 0sec. However, two pairs of Chinese qigong practitioners showed 5% significance peaks at +11sec. If these delay peaks were caused by toh-ate, their sending performances were longer than several seconds.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
For several years, the authors have been studying remote action in physiological responses and time differences between motion times of sending and receiving. Here, the Receiver's discriminability index d' was estimated by the signal detection theory. The Receiver judged the existence of the sending signal every 10-second trial. 1280 trials were done by 4 subjects (3 males, 1 females) who were veteran practitioners of martial arts. Total hits were 668 trials (p=0.0588, one tailed) and the average of the Receivers' discriminability indexes d' was 0.092 and its 95% confidence interval was [0.167, 0.016]. Discrimination of the signal existence in remote action was more difficult that in usual sensory stimuli experiments.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Two persons who have a 40-year history as a pair practicing a martial art which front-detects a partner's attack sign performed remote action wcperiment a total of 4 times over 2 years. In all runs, the two subjects were in two different rooms, and the sender emitted a qi of attack only once during an 80-second trial under double blinded and randomized conditions. In this report, the temperature data of the second experimental series were analyzed and tested. The difference between the average temperature changes during a perios of 2 seconds before the 1 second of sending was statistically significant as 5% or less. The time of change was the same as in part I which analyzed the first experimental series. Then, the differences between three large peaks which occurred around-41(p=3.7%) sec(peak I), 0 sec(13.4)(peak II), +36 sec(1.3)(peak III) in the frequency histogram which Yamamoto reported were also analyzed and tested. Peak II showed a statistically significant value of 1% or less between the difference of the average temperature change near the sending time, however there was no significance near peaks I and III.

BIAL Foundation Archive
Start date: 1994
History:
The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Title: BIAL Grants
Start date: 1994
History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.
