Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
In order to proof the hypothesis of a correlation in stimulus-related electrophysiological measures in distant pairs of participants measurements were carried out between one lab in England and one in Germany synchronously. 28 sessions were conducted with 16 pairs of participants in which one of both had to view 360 pictures in five runs. Emotionally affective pictures, neutral pictures, black screen stimuli, and pictures of the co-participant were presented. The three seconds post-stimulus event-related responses and power spectral
EEG data of the non-stimulated participant were used for analysis. A non-parametrical statistical approach was applied to the epochs using a randomised selection of 10 000 possible but arbitrary stimulus sequences in the same data files for comparison with the actual one.
The results for the entire group could not replicate the findings of the previous studies. The event-related potentials show no remarkable effect nor does the EOG reveal remarkable significances. The spectral analysis also did not show exceptional significances in all categories. However, the significances seem not to be equally distributed over all participants. Three participants show extraordinary high significances for emotional, affective, or the co-participants pictures. The SCPs and skin conductance level and response revealed the highest z-scores which is in line with the fact that both measures react highly sensitive on emotional changes and changes in the arousal level. Other measures such as the time series ERP and the frequency bands did not show exceptional significance values. However, extraordinary large values in some participants suggest the existence of ‘gifted participants’.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The search for correlations in the brain activities of distant pairs of participants has become a popular research method over the last decade. This method can be seen as a tool for investigating the physiology of a postulated extrasensory or telepathic connection between related people. Such correlations would also support the idea of an entanglement of brain functions.
The report presented here summarizes the findings of three subsequent studies conducted by the author. In two of these, brain signals simultaneously recorded in remote laboratories at a distance of about 750 km were correlated. A comparison of the study outcome shows that each study bears significant correlations. The significances were weak and only replicable for the Alpha rhythm, which was increased in non-stimulated participants during the time their co-participants were exposed to pictures with affective content. After applying a potential correction for multiple testing, most significances would probably vanish.
It is discussed whether the correlations might be artefacts and how far the results may support the theory of a generalised entanglement between the brain functions of the participants

OBJECTIVES:
This highly elaborative study aimed on replicating a possible correlation in EEG and/or skin conductance responses in separated human participants which was found by Wackermann et al., 2004 and Hinterberger et al., in press. In order to prove the effect without the possibility of an electromagnetic or acoustic cross talk between the participants and with the assumption that telepathic communication is spatially independent,
we arranged a setting with two far distant laboratories, one in Northampton/UK and one in Tübingen/Germany in which closely related pairs of participants were measured synchronously.
METHODS:
28 sessions were conducted with 16 pairs of participants in which one of both (referred to as ‘stimulated
participant’) had to view 360 pictures of different categories in five runs. Emotionally affective pictures, neutral pictures, black screen stimuli, and pictures of the co-participant were presented. Eight channels of EEG, eye movements, and skin conductance were recorded from both the stimulated and non-stimulated participant. The event-related responses in the EEG of the non-stimulated participant of three seconds after stimulus onset were used for the data analysis and additionally the response curves of the spectral power of seven frequency bands. A nonparametrical statistical approach was applied to those measures to identify possible correlations between the stimulus times and the EEG of the non stimulated participant. Therefore, a randomised selection of 10 000 possible but arbitrary stimulus sequences was applied to the EEG data for comparison with the actual one.
RESULTS:
The results for the entire group could not replicate the findings of the previous studies. The event-related
potentials show no remarkable effect nor does the EOG reveal remarkable significances. Also the spectral analysis shows no exceptional significances in all categories. However, the significances seem not to be equally distributed over all participants. Three participants show extraordinary high significances for emotional, affective, or the coparticipants pictures.
CONCLUSION:
The data of the non-stimulated participants were used to search for correlations with the stimulation
times of the stimulated participants to detect a possible telepathic effect measurable with physiology. This effect turned out to be, if present at all, very small. The SCPs and skin conductance level and response revealed the highest z-scores which is in line with the fact that both measures react highly sensitive on emotional changes and changes in the arousal level. Other measures such as the time series ERP and the frequency bands did not show exceptional significance values. However, extraordinary large values in some participants suggest the existence of ‘gifted participants’.

Can a slide-show presentiment effect be discovered in brain electrical activity?

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The presentation of pictures evokes clearly detectable responses in the electro­encephalogram (EEG). Here, the question is addressed whether people show an anomalous pre-stimulus response prior to a sudden appearance of pictures. Therefore, twenty participants were exposed at randomised times to affective and non-affective pictures, and to checkerboard stimuli. In a non-parametric statistical analysis the one-second pre-stimulus epochs were compared with arbitrarily chosen non-exposed pre-stimulus epochs. In a second step, the contrasts between the pre-stimulus responses of different conditions were tested for significance. Checkerboard stimulation revealed no effect, whereas the picture stimuli resulted in a significant increase of the EEG activity. For affective pictures as well as for the difference between affective and neutral pictures, significant z-scores greater than z = 2.0 were found. A control condition with a covered monitor did not show such an effect. The delta band power was only decreased before presentation of pictures.
The results support the possible existence of an abnormal presentiment effect. As it is not visible in the averaged EEG curves, this effect may not be time-locked to the stimulus and may be different for each participant. The non-significant results for neutral pictures and checkerboard stimuli suggest that emotional affectivity is important for a pre-stimulus effect in the EEG.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The search for correlations in the brain activities between distant pairs of participants has become a popular research method especially in Freiburg/Germany over the last decade. It was meant to be a tool for investigating correlations of brain functions in terms of an extrasensory connection between related people which would also support the idea of an entanglement of brain functions. Recently, three elaborate studies have been conducted by the authors; two of them were correlating brain signals which were simultaneously recorded in remote laboratories at a distance of 750 km and more. A comparison of the study outcome shows that each study bears some significant correlations which seem to be extraordinary; nevertheless, those significances are very weak and after applying a potential correction for multiple testing they would probably vanish. These significances were replicable in all three studies for the Alpha rhythm which was increased in non-stimulated participants during the time when their closely related co-participants were exposed to pictures with affective content. It is discussed whether the correlations might be artefacts and how far the results may support the theory of a generalized entanglement between the brain functions of the participants.
