Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
The purpose of the present study is to test whether hallucinatory experiences respond to the dimensionality principle and whether they occur in non-psychotic disorders. Six hundred fifty six undergraduate students, 76% females and 24% males (age range 17-57), completed seven scales, such as the Hallucination Experiences Scale, Paranormal Experiences Questionnaire, Creative Experiences Questionnaire, Tellegen Absorption Scale, Dissociative Experiences Scale, Schizotypical Personality Questionnaire, and Eysenck Personality Inventory. Data for persons seeing apparitions (and having other experiences) were compared with data for those who did not. Experients scored higher on absorption (z= 6.06), dissociation (z= 4.65), fantasy proneness (z= 4.76) and cognitive perceptual schizotypy (z= 8.21) than non experients. Twentyfour (80%) out of 30 correlations were also significant. Apparitional and apparition-like experiences are related to higher levels of reports of absorption, dissociation and imaginative fantasy experiences. Such findings suggest that visions of ghosts may be related to cognitive processes involving fantasy and cognitive perceptual schizotypy proneness, which are correlated with each other. The results showed a higher level of cognitive-perceptual, schizotypy, absorption, dissociation, fantasy and hallucination proneness, and visual imagery in experiencers than in non-experiencers and confirm previous studies. The findings suggest that especially cognitive-perceptual aspects of schizotypy, such as disturbances in sense of self, certainly of self, and self-awareness, are essential features of persons who had paranormal experiencers.

ABSTRACT:
An out-of-body experience or OBE is one in which the “self” or center of awareness seems to the experient to occupy temporarily a position that is spatially remote from his or her body. The experience seems are very widespread in the general population. Some studies show a close relation between the incidente of OBEs and their psychological correlates, especially personality variables, absorption, and dissociative experiences. Six specific hypotheses are tested: Students who report out-of-body experiences have a higher capacity for (1) absorption, (2) dissociation, (3) fantasy proneness, (3) kinetic and visual imagery, (4) visual and tactile hallucination, and (5) cognitive-perceptual, disorganized and interpersonal schizotypy than non-experients. A total of 648 undergraduate students population included 76% females and 24% males, and who completed a number of scales. Data for experients of OBE were compared with data for those who did not (experients N= 132 vs. non-experients N= 516). The results showed a higher level of cognitive-perceptual, schizotypy, absorption, dissociation, fantasy and hallucination proneness, and visual imagery in OBErs than in non-OBErs which confirm previous studies. The statistical test found that the absorption and cognitive-perceptual schizotypy were the best discriminant for visual [F (2/498)= 81.08; p< .001] and tactile hallucination [F (2/498)= 88.44; p< .001], which underlie the differentiation of the OBErs and non-OBErs. This study suggest that the dissociational model of OBE, however the term hallucination has pejorative overtones in spite of the widespread occurrence of anomalous perceptual experiences in the normal population. Some subjects report beneficial effects from OBEs in an adaptive way.

Recent years has seen an increasing interest in hallucinations, including investigations of its prevalence in nonclinical populations. This study, investigated the multidimensionality of hallucinations in nonclinical participants. Compared nonclinical participants and schizophrenic patients. Both samples of 655 university students and 26 psychiatric inpatients were recruited to take part in this study, who were not paid for their collaboration. The Hallucination Experiences Questionnaire (HEQ) (38-short descriptions rated on a 0-5 scale; Cronbach's alpha = 0.93) was used, which includes in its assessment of the predisposition to haliucinate six sensory modalities. Results revealed a number of differences between groups in terms of the characteristics and prevalence of their hallucinations. However, both groups were similar in terms of the different forms the voices took experienced their voices as both negative and positive. An alternative, dimensional approach assumes that schizophrenia is not a discrete illness entity, but that psychotic symptoms differ in quantitative ways from normal experíences and behaviours.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
An apparition is an experience, such as a vision or sense of presence, in which another person appears who is often dying or undergoing some other crisis. Six hypotheses were tested: people who see or feel apparitions have a higher capacity for absorption, fantasy, and cognitive-perceptual schizotypy than nonexperients. Six hundred and fifty-six undergraduate students, 76% females and 24% males (age range 17–57), completed four scales. Experients scored higher on absorption (AE: z = 6.06 and SP: z = 5.19), fantasy proneness (AE: z = 4.76) and cognitive perceptual schizotypy (AE: z = 7.01 and SP: z = 8.21) than nonexperients. The results
suggest that, apart from the dominant schizotypy proneness, a second dimension (absorption) may underlie the differentiation of the two groups of participants. Gender differences were overall nonsignificant. Apparitional and other apparition like experiences are related to higher levels of reports of absorption and imaginative fantasy experiences. Visions of ghosts may be related to cognitive processes involving fantasy and cognitive perceptual schizotypy proneness. Often experients do not tell anyone about their experiences. This study demonstrated the viability of adopting a psychological approach to understand the crisis apparition experience.

The purposes of this study are to (1) evaluate la frequency and percentage of fourteen types of experiences; (2) measure the degree of emotional impact; and (3) relate each experience to demographic variables such as gender, age, marital status, birth order, religion and spirituality. To this end an online survey was designed to participants who were interested in topics such as “new age”, esotericism and a range of anomalous, spiritual and paranormal psychological experiences (N = 1733; 70% female, 30% males; median age = 31,31). Results show that the most frequent experiences were telepathy, premonitory dreams, sensations
of a presence, and déjà-vu. Results also show that the most disturbing experiences were related to feelings of possessions, negative hallucinations and spontaneous psychokinesis.

Some studies suggest that a strong belief in the paranormal predisposes one to having a variety of paranormal experiences, or even to an equal or larger extent interpret anomalous perceptual experiences as such. Proneness to shizotypy is another factor that underlies the control and preservation of these beliefs. This study examined possible differences between ”hallucinators” and ”non-hallucinators”, from a sample of believers in the paranormal, in terms of the intensity of auditory, visual and tactile imagery, as well as three factors of proneness to schizotypy. A sample of 158 believers in the paranormal was examined, including 110 women (69.6%) and 48 men (30.4%), age range 19 to 75 years (m = 46.83, Sd = 11.92). A second sample included 158 psychology students, 69% women and 30% men (age m = 46.83), from the Open interamerican University. Both groups completed Betts’ Vivid imagery Scale, Barrett’s hallucinations questionnaire, and the Schizotypical Personality questionnaire. The results revealed greater intensity of visual, auditory and táctiles imagery by hallucinators as compared to non-hallucinators among believers in the paranormal, but no greater proneness to hallucinate. however, the visual, auditory and tactile hallucinators scored higher than non-hallucinators on the cognitive-perceptual factor, which also appeared as the best discriminator of visual, auditory and tactile hallucinatory modalities in the student sample. A possible conclusion is that believers in the paranormal are psychologically integrated individuals; nevertheless the term ”hallucination” should be abandoned.

ABSTRACT:
The phenomenon of aura vision has a long tradition in the religious, occult, and psychical research literatures. Perceptual illusions, afterimages, and contrast effects have been offered as scientific explanations for aura reports. Among a sample of 586 undergraduates, it was predicted that those who reported an aura experience would score higher than nonexperiencers on the Betts Vividness of Imagery Scale (visual and tactile), Barrett’s Hallucinations Questionnaire (visual and tactile), the Creative Experiences Questionnaire (fantasy proneness), the Tellegen Absorption Scale, the Dissociative Experiences Scale, and the cognitive-perceptual subscale of the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire. All the predictions were significantly confirmed except those concerning visual and tactile hallucinations. It was concluded that persons who “see” auras are likely to have a rich imaginal life.

There seems to be a link between schizotypal symptoms and spiritual experience whereby, in the normal population, individuals with spiritual experiences also indicate relatively high levels of experiences and schizotypal thinking. However, positive features of schizotypy are dominant, for example, magical ideation and unusual perceptual experiences, which are substantially opposite of negative symptoms such as anhedonia, emotional difficulties and interpersonal deficits. For this study, compared to a sample of psychology students “not spiritual” (N = 71) and “spiritual” (N = 131) of both sexes, 24% males and 76% women, age range 17-57 years (average = 24.31, SD = 6.78). Spirituality here is defined as the set of thoughts, ideas, and attitudes unstructured associated with the mystical feeling of unity, not linked to any religious doctrine. There are three hypotheses: (1) you will find a significant difference in positive symptoms of schizotypy between the two groups of students, but (2) will be no significant difference in the negative, and (3) that usually associated with paranormal experiences schizotypy (such as telepathy, see auras, out of body experiences, sense of presence and see apparitions) correlate positively and significantly with positive symptoms of schizotypy rather than the negatives. We found a significant difference in positive symptoms of schizotypy among the group of students ‘spiritual’ (Mean = 14.32) and “spiritual” (Mean = 12.63) (p = .02) but not significant for negative symptoms, was found further that all paranormal experiences correlated significantly with positive symptoms of schizotypy (telepathy r = .25, see the aura r = 15, out of body experiences r = 25, r = sense of presence 33, and see apparitions r = 28, all p <.001, two tailed). Although paranormal phenomena such as telepathy and see the aura is not correlated with negative symptoms of schizotypy, however, found a significant correlation between out of body experience (r = .07, p = .03), sense of presence (r = 11, p = .002) and see apparitions (r = .12, p <.001, two tailed) with negative symptoms, although substantially lower than in the positive symptoms. Possibly mild schizotypal beliefs and experiences may not only be pathological, but positive and beneficial to the individual.

An extrasensory experience is one in which it appears that the experient?s mind has acquired information directly, that is, seemingly without either the mediation of the recognized human senses or the processes of logical inference. The «extrasensory» in extrasensory experience therefore pertains to appearances and not necessarily to reality, whereas the «extrasensory» in extrasensory perception refers to the nature of a hypothesized paranormal reality. Two specific hypotheses are tested: A sample of Argentinean participants who have reported Extrasensorial experiences have a higher capacity for (1) visual and tactile hallucination, and (2) schizotypy proneness than non--experients. The results showed a higher level of cognitive-perceptual schizotypy and hallucination proneness in experients than in non-experients. The findings suggest that under-lying dissociative process such as absorption and fantasy proneness are associated with ESP Experiences.

In an out-of-body experience (OBE), the "self," or center of awareness, seems to temporarily occupy a position spatially remote from one's body. In support of previous studies, undergraduate students reporting OBEs (N = 132) showed a higher level of cognitive-perceptual schizotypy, absorption, dissociation, fantasy, and hallucination proneness, and visual imagery than did non-OBErs (N = 516). Absorption and cognitive-perceptual schizotypy were the best discriminators for visual and tactile hallucinations (p < .001). The results support a dissociation model of OBEs. Some persons reported beneficial adaptive effects from their OBEs. Despite the widespread occurrence of anomalous perceptual experiences, including OBEs, in the general population, the term hallucination still has pejorative overtones. The present results are in agreement with other studies in which measures of fantasy proneness seemed to be successful predictors of psychic phenomena (Myers, Austrin, Grisso, & Nickeson, 1983; Wilson & Barber, 1982). Such findings suggest that OBEs may be related to fantasy proneness and cognitive-perceptual schizotypy, which are correlated with each other. Future research should focus on the role of different types of OBEs in personality and cognitive processing.

Hallucinations are experienced by numerous healthy people who are not suffering from neurological or psychiatric disorders. An extrasensory experience is one in which it appears that the experient’s mind has acquired information directly; that is, seemingly without the mediation of the recognized human senses.The veridicality of psi information in ESP experiences involving hallucinations is a debatable matter in mental health and parapsychology. The‘extrasensory’ in‘extrasensory experience’ therefore pertains to appearances and not necessarily to reality; whereas the ‘extrasensory’ in ‘extrasensory perception’ refers to the nature of a hypothesized paranormal reality.
In this study, three specific hypotheses were tested: two samples of under­graduate students (Argentine and Peruvian) who have reported extrasensory experiences would have a higher capacity than non-experients for: (1) auditory, visual and tactile hallucination;(2)schizotypy proneness;(3)absorption/dissociation; and (4) fantasy proneness. The results showed a higher level in experients than in non-experients of hallucination proneness and cognitive–perceptual schizotypy, followed by absorption and fantasy proneness. The findings also suggest that cognitive–perceptual aspects of schizotypy are features of persons who have had ESP/hallucinatory experiences, on the assumption that underlying dissociative processes such as absorption and fantasy proneness are associated with ESP experiences.

A number of studies have demonstrated high prevalence rates of hypnagogic and hypnopompic hallucinations in the general population, such as sensations of floating, seeing lights, hearing noises, being called, and being touched. There are a number of well
documented cases of ESP and crisis apparitions that have also occurred during the hypnagogic/hypnopompic states, such as forms
of ESP, telepathy, and out-of-body experiences. Other formal links between paranormal or anomalous experiences may be seen in the positive relationship consistently found between HG/HP and dissociational/absorption experiences and fantasy proneness, which correlated significantly higher on schizotypy and perceptual aberration, without suffering from the more unpleasant symptoms. Participants who have HG/HP experiences have a higher capacity for (1) schizotypy proneness and cognitive-perceptual schizotypy, and (2) dissociation, absorption, and fantasy proneness than nonexperients. A total of 648 undergraduate psychology students from Argentina and 214 from Peru were tested. The results suggest that absorption and cognitive-perceptual aspects of schizotypy, in particular, are essential features of persons with HG/HP experiences. The results, which suggest that persons who
experience HG/HP are likely to have a rich imaginal life, are consistent with other studies that have found measures of absorption to be successful predictors of psychic phenomena.

Two samples were studied, 214 students of psychology at a university in Lima (74% women, 26% men) and 184 upper secondary students in Pucallpa, Peruvian region of Ucayali (42% women, 58% men). Results show that both students from Lima and from Pucallpa that had had aparitional experiences were more prone to experiment unusual pseudo-hallucinatory perceptions and more prone to skizotypy in comparison to those who reported not having experiences of the sort. In addition, students that had had aparitional experiences showehigher levels in the scales of disociation, absortion and proness to phantasy compared to students with no aparitional experiences.

The purpose of the present study is to test whether hallucinatory experiences respond to the dimensionality principle and to detect potential differences between a group of “hallucinators” and a group of “non-hallucinators” with regard to personality traits in 214 Peruvian undergraduates students (non-clinical sample) and 30 outpatients (clinical sample). Among a sample of undergraduates, it was predicted that those who reported a number of anomalous perceptual experiences would score higher than nonexperiencers on the hallucination prone (auditive, visual, hipnagogic/hipnopompic and tactile), fantasy proneness, absorption, dissociation, and the cognitive-perceptual factor of the schizotypal questionnaire. All the predictions were significantly confirmed except those concerning interpersonal and disorganized schizotypy.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
La experiencia de déjà vu puede ser definida como cualquier impresión subjetiva errónea de familiaridad acerca de una experiencia presente con pasado indefinido. En efecto, individuos que tienen experiencias de déjà vu tienen un nivel más elevado de actividad imaginativa/fantasiosa o propensión a la fantasía. Cuando se compara a estos individuos con quienes no la experimentan, estas personas tienen mayor capacidad de absorción psicológica. Este estudio incluyó 560 estudiantes de psicología de ambos sexos, 406 mujeres y 154 varones. Los resultados indican que la esquizotipia cognitivo-perceptual, desrealización/ despersonalización, sinestesia, y tendencia a la fantasía son factores que parecen cumplir un rol en la ocurrencia de la experiencia déjà vu en comparación con individuos que no tienen la experiencia. Además, las experiencias déjà vu podrían operar en un continuo en cuyo extremo están los estados disociativos normales y en el otro, estados patológicos como la amnesia disociativa y la despersonalización.

An out-of-body experience or OBE is one in which the “self” or center of awareness seems to the person who experiences it to occupy temporarily a position that is spatially remote from his or her body. The experience seems to be quite widespread in the
general population. Some studies show a close relation relationship between the incidence of OBEs and its psychological correlates,
especially personality variables, absorption, and dissociative experiences. Six specific hypotheses are tested: Students who report out-of-body experiences have a higher capacity for (1) Visual and Tactile hallucination, (2) Cognitive-perceptual, Disorganized and Interpersonal schizotypy, (3) Dissociation, Absorption, Fantasy proneness, than students that do not report such experiences. A total of 648 undergraduate students population (Argentine sample) and 214 undergraduate students population (Peruvian sample), completed a number of scales. Data for subjects who experienced OBE were compared with data for those who did not. The results showed higher levels of cognitive-perceptual schizotypy, absorption, dissociation, fantasy and hallucination proneness, and visual imagery in OBErs than in non-OBErs which confirms previous studies. This study suggests the dissociational model of OBE, although the term hallucination has pejorative overtones in spite of the widespread occurrence of anomalous perceptual experiences in the normal population. Some subjects report beneficial effects from OBEs in an adaptive way.

Recent studies on hallucinatory experiences suggest that a range of hallucinatory experiences may occur outside the clinical practice, and do not lead to psychosis. In fact, the severity of mental disturbances seems to follow a continuum where one may regard psychosis in a human being as a distribution of symptoms, which constitute a terrein much more apt for psychological
than psychopathological study. Here, we formulate a hypothesis where on the continuum hallucinatory experiences may occur, in a non-clinical population. Probably, dissociative experiences and other related constructs, schizotypy, and dream experiences, constitute a common domain. The objective of the present study was to determine whether high scores on proneness to unusual perceptual experiences among healthy individuals are directly and positively correlated with high scores on intensity of imagery, schizotypical tendencies, absorption, dissociation, and fantasy proneness. The sample included university students (N= 655) of both sexes, 161 males and 494 females. (Average age = 25.57). The students completed six scales, five of which referred to perceptual experiences and one measure of personality risk indications, the Schizotypical Personality Questionnaire (SPQ). The results supported the idea that there is a correlation between having hallucinatory experiences and schizotypical personality in the general population. The results indicated that the Cognitiveperceptual factor was the best discriminator for the modality visual hallucination [F (1/149) = 17.83; p < .001, one-tailed], auditory [F (2/148) = 23.82; p <.001, one-tailed] and tactil [F (1/149) = 11.73; p = .001, one-tailed] between hallucinators and non-hallucinators. However, although the levels of schizotypy were high, they are not necessarily pathological; actually, these kind of experiences in their nature are completely different from those in pathological disturbances and they are not associated with any loss of contact with reality.
