Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
We developed several neural network models based on dendritic computation. Dendrites as independent computational units enable simulation of a wide variety of perceptual and cognitive phenomena. Computer simulations showed that new neural networks with dendrites are able to explain how neural activity is modulated by attention in primary visual cortex and in extra-striate cortex. Also it was shown how visual search is performed among moving targets and for targets that change locations due to the eye movements. The model of the interaction between dorsal and ventral visual streams enabled simulation of classical Gestalt principles of figure-ground organization (size, contrast, and convexity) along with newly discovered principles such as lower region and top-bottom polarity. The same model of figure-ground organization produced brain activation consistent with brain imaging studies and with electrophysiological recordings in the monkey brain. The model of temporal grouping is able to explain how we segregate figures from background based on temporal changes alone. This model does not require neural synchronization in order to sense temporal patterns. Furthermore, we developed a neural model of semantic memory which is able to simulate recent experimental findings about interaction between language understanding and perception and action. We performed several cognitive experiments which showed that perceptual and motor variables facilitate semantic processing in agreement with the model. Our project provided computational evidence for the importance of dendrites for information processing in the nervous system and for understanding visual perception and cognition.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A computational model was developed to explain a pattern of results of fMRI activation in the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) supporting visual working memory for multiobject scenes. The model is based on the hypothesis that dendrites of excitatory neurons are major computational elements in the cortical circuit. Dendrites enable formation of a competitive queue that exhibits a gradient of activity values for nodes encoding different objects, and this pattern is stored in working memory. In the model, brain imaging data are interpreted as a consequence of blood flow arising from dendritic processing. Computer simulations showed that the model successfully simulates data showing the involvement of inferior IPS in object individuation and spatial grouping through representation of objects' locations in space, along with the involvement of superior IPS in object identification through representation of a set of objects' features. The model exhibits a capacity limit due to the limited dynamic range for nodes and the operation of lateral inhibition among them. The capacity limit is fixed in the inferior IPS regardless of the objects' complexity, due to the normalization of lateral inhibition, and variable in the superior IPS, due to the different encoding demands for simple and complex shapes. Systematic variation in the strength of self-excitation enables an understanding of the individual differences in working memory capacity. The model offers several testable predictions regarding the neural basis of visual working memory.

Perception as a context for conceptual processing and language understanding

ABSTRACT:
In the research on language understanding, context is defined in terms of words that help to construct the meaning of the target word or passage of text. Here, it is argued that the definition of context in language understanding should be broader in order to incorporate perception as an essential component of meaning. A theory of perceptual symbol systems is provided as a framework for understanding the role of perception in solving the symbol grounding problem for higher-level cognition. Theory posits that symbolic thought acquires its meaning only through reactivation of perceptual experiences of objects or states in the world to which the though refers to. Empirical evidence supporting the theory is also reviewed.

Title:
A feedback model of figure-ground assignment

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A computational model is proposed in order to explain how bottom-up and top-down signals are combined into a unified perception of figure and background. The model is based on the interaction between the ventral and the dorsal stream. The dorsal stream computes saliency based on boundary signals provided by the simple and the complex cortical cells. Output from the dorsal stream is projected to the surface network which serves as a blackboard on which the surface representation is formed. The surface network is a recurrent network which segregates different surfaces by assigning different firing rates to them. The figure is labeled by the maximal firing rate. Computer simulations showed that the model correctly assigns figural status to the surface with a smaller size, a greater contrast, convexity, surroundedness, horizontal-vertical orientation and a higher spatial frequency content. The simple gradient of activity in the dorsal stream enables the simulation of the new principles of the lower region and the top-bottom polarity. The model also explains how the exogenous attention and the endogenous attention may reverse the figural assignment. Due to the local excitation in the surface network, neural activity at the cued region will spread over the whole surface representation. Therefore, the model implements the object-based attentional selection.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Attention modulates the amount of excitatory and inhibitory lateral interactions in the visual cortex. A recurrent neural network is proposed to account for modulatory influence of top-down signals. In the model, two types of inhibitions are distinguished: dendritic and lateral inhibitions. Dendritic inhibition regulates the amount of impact that surrounding cells may exert on a target cell via the dendrites of excitatory neurons and the dendrites of subpopulation of inhibitory neurons mediating lateral inhibition. Attention increases the amount of dendritic inhibition and prevents contextual interactions, while it has no effect on the target cell when there is no surround input. Computer simulations showed that the proposed model is able to exhibit properties of attentional gating. In the condition of focused attention, neural activity in the presence of surrounding stimuli is restored to the level as when the target stimulus is presented alone. Moreover, the model is able to show contrast gain and response gain on the contrast sensitivity function depending on the strength of the dendritic inhibition.

Cortical synchronization as a neural basis for visual perception

ABSTRACT:
Cortical synchronization has been suggested as a neural mechanism that is able to solve the feature binding problem. This idea has been intensively studied at neurophysiological, psychophysical and computational level. In this paper, arguments for and against the role of cortical synchronization in visual perception are critically examined. Initial neurophysiological findings of correlated neural activity in the primary visual cortex have been questioned by studies which reveal enhanced firing rate to the figure region compared to the background. Computational investigations reveal that synchronization has capacity limit. At the behavioural level, change blindness has been used as the evidence for capacity limit of visual perception. However, further examination of this issue showed that detailed visual representation exists but it is obscured by limitation of attention and visual working memory. Other behavioural phenomena, such as perceptual asynchrony, also point to the fact that there is dissociation between correlated neural activity and perception. Therefore, at present there is no sufficient evidence to support the conclusion that cortical synchronization plays a crucial role in visual perception.

A computational model of saliency map read-out during visual search

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
When searching for a target in a visual scene filled with distractors, the mechanism of inhibition of return prevents revisiting previously attended locations. We proposed a new computational model for the inhibition of return, which is able to examine priority or saliency map in a manner consistent with psychophysical findings. The basic elements of the model are two neural integrators connected with two inhibitory interneurons. The integrators keep the saliency value of the currently attended location in the working memory. The inhibitory inter-neurons modulate a feedforward flow of information between the saliency map and the output map which points to the location of interest. Computer simulations showed that the model is able to read-out the saliency map when the objects are moving or when eye movements are present. Also, it is able to simultaneously select more then one location, even when they are non-contiguous. The model can be considered as a neural implementation of the episodic theory of attention.

Neurophysiological investigations suggest that presynaptic ionotropic receptors are important mechanism for controlling synaptic transmission. In this paper, presynaptic kainate receptors are incorporated in a feedforward inhibitory neural network in order to investigate their role in the cortical information processing. Computer simulations showed that the proposed mechanism is able to compute the function maximum by disinhibiting the cell with the maximal amplitude. The maximum is computed with high precision even in the case where inhibitory synaptic weights are weak and (or) asymmetric. Moreover, the network is able to track time-varying input and to select multiple winners. These capabilities do not depend on the dimensionality of the network. Also, the model is able to implement the winner-take-all behaviour.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Neurophysiological investigations showed that attention influences neural responses in the visual cortex by modulating the amount of contextual interactions between cells. Attention acts as a gate that protects cells from lateral excitatory and inhibitory influences. A recurrent neural network based on dendritic inhibition is proposed to account for these findings. In the model, two types of inhibition are distinguished: dendritic and lateral inhibition. Dendritic inhibition regulates the amount of impact that surrounding cells may exert on a target cell via dendrites of excitatory neurons and dendrites of subpopulation of inhibitory neurons mediating lateral inhibition. Attention increases the amount of dendritic inhibition and prevents contextual interactions, while it has no effect on the target cell when there is no contextual input. Computer simulations showed that the proposed model reproduces the results of several studies about interaction between attention and horizontal connections in the visual cortex.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
According to the temporal correlation hypothesis, synchronization of neural activity in different spatial maps solves the feature binding problem. Here, a new model of visual working memory is proposed which is able to group synchronous temporal events without neural synchronization. Instead, the model is based on the difference in the firing rate. The model integrates discrete inputs over time and compares activity in different integrators. When the amplitude difference in integrators is large enough due to the different rates of evidence accumulation, temporal figure and background are distinguished in the working memory. Computer simulations showed that the model correctly groups events according to their deterministic or stochastic temporal structure. The model is robust with respect to the temporal noise and to the correlation between figure-ground events. Also, the model is able to explain visual prior entry and perceptual asynchrony between colour, motion and orientation.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Experimental data on the interaction between perception and conceptual processing in the domain of motion was modeled by using an adaptive resonance circuit. It was shown that the same mechanisms that are responsible for stable category learning also support perceptual simulation of conceptual knowledge. The model is implemented as a dynamical system, which is able to switch between perception mode, where the network dynamics is driven primarily by the sensory input, and the simulation mode, where the network dynamics is driven by the conceptual input from the internal sources. Computer simulations showed that the differences in reaction times in behavioral studies arise from the match (or mismatch) between the sensory input and top-down learned expectations when the network switches between perception and the simulation mode.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Recent psychophysical and neurophysiological investigations showed that visual system encodes luminance and use it to estimate illumination and surface brightness. We proposed anovel neural model for luminance coding based on recurrent inhibition, from the retinal ganglion cells to the axons of the bipolar cells, which modulates the amount of sensory input that ganglion cells receive (Sagdullaev et al., 2006). Extended version of the model, where the amount of presynaptic inhibition is made proportional to the maximum luminance in the visual scene, implements gain control mechanism which adjusts the raw luminance into a measure of brightness of surface. Computer simulations showed that the model scales brightness estimates consistent with the highest-luminance-as-white anchoring rule (Gilchistet al., 2004). Simulations also showed that the model is able to act as a change detector when the presynaptic inhibition temporally lags behind the excitatory input to the ganglioncell.

We proposed a neural network model in order to explain how bottom-up and top-down influences are combined into a unified perception of figure and background. Computer simulations showed that the model correctly assign figural status to familiar object when bottom-up cues are ambiguous, but when strong bottom-up cue is present, familiarity competes with it.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Figure-ground organization is an important early step in visual processing. It separates structured input to which processing efforts should be devoted (figure) from less structured background. Gestalt psychologists identified several variables which influence figure-ground assignment, including size, contrast, surroundness, and convexity, symmetry, parallelism and horizontal-vertical axes. Recently, several new factors affecting figure-ground organization were discovered. Those are lower region, top-bottom polarity, and extremal edges. Early neurophysiological investigations of figure-ground assignment found enhanced firing rate in the primary visual cortex of monkeys. Activity enhancement was observed in the region which corresponds to the perceived figure in texture segregation task. On the other hand, recent investigations revealed a special group of neurons in the visual cortex which detect border ownership. The figure is distinguished from the background by different responses to the same boundary. If the figure is on one side of the boundary, a certain neuron will fire, but if the figure is on the other side of the same boundary, the same neuron will be silenced and another neuron will show an enhanced firing rate. There are many computational models proposed to explain the properties of figure-ground organization. Several models focused on the boundary assignment alone. Other models are concerned with explaining psychophysical findings. Although the models share some common assumptions, there are also important differences between them. Border ownership models could not explain many of the identified Gestalt principles of figural assignment. On the other hand, psychophysical models are based on the assumptions that are not supported by the neurophysiology. Important problem for the future research is how to reconcile psychophysical and neurophysiological models in order to provide a unified account of the figure-ground organization.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVE:
Objective of the proposed project is to develop and test new neural networks for visual perception and cognition, which includes dendrites as independent computational units. It is expected that the neural model with dendrites will exhibit greater capacity for information processing and its output will show greater similarity with human behavior and experience compared to previous models.
METHOD:
We used computer simulations in order to test the properties of the proposed models. Results of computer simulations are compared with the results obtained in previous brain imaging and behavioral research on humans and/or neurophysiological studies on primates. Also, we tested several predictions derived from the models using cognitive experiments on humans where we measured the speed and accuracy of responses to simple perceptual and cognitive tasks.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS:
Computer simulations showed that new neural networks with dendrites are able to explain how attention influences neural activity in the visual cortex, how visual search is performed, how cortical activity gives rise to figure-ground organization and perception of temporal structure. Furthermore, we developed a neural model of semantic memory which is able to simulate recent experimental findings about interaction between language understanding and perception and action. We performed several cognitive experiments which showed that perceptual and motor variables facilitate semantic processing in agreement with the model. Our project provided computational evidence for the importance of dendrites for information processing in the nervous system and for understanding visual perception and cognition.
