Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
The aim of the research project was to investigate whether a brief daily mindfulness meditation practice can contribute to an improvement of attentional functions and changes in the underlying brain networks.
Towards this end we conducted a longitudinal EEG study with randomized control group design that assessed the modification of attentional functions after 16 weeks of mindfulness meditation practice. At baseline participants were allocated to a meditation (MG) or a wait-list control group (CG). The MG received three hours mindfulness meditation training and were requested to meditate daily for ten minutes for the next 16 weeks. At baseline, after 8 weeks and after 16 weeks, participants performed computerized tasks that address attentional control mechanisms, while the 64-channel EEG was recorded.
The analysis of the event-related potentials (ERP) of the EEG confirmed that regular mindfulness practice influences brain mechanisms of attentional control evidenced by differences between the MG and CG in ERP components that indicate inhibitory, resource allocation and conflict monitoring processes. Importantly, also the levels of self reported mindfulness (assessed with the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire) increased significantly in the MG compared to the CG. This increase was positively correlated with the self-reported amount of meditation practice.
Consistent with recent findings, the pattern of results suggests that mindfulness practice may be associated with a more even distribution of limited attentional resources and more efficient conflict monitoring.

Mindfulness-based approaches: Are they all the same?
Publication year: 2011
URL:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21254062
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Mindfulness-based approaches are increasingly employed as interventions for treating a variety of psychological, psychiatric and physical problems. Such approaches include ancient Buddhist mindfulness meditations such as Vipassana and Zen meditations, modern group-based standardized meditations, such as mindfulness-based stress reduction and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, and further psychological interventions, such as dialectical behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy. We review commonalities and differences of these interventions regarding philosophical background, main techniques, aims, outcomes, neurobiology and psychological mechanisms. In sum, the currently applied mindfulness-based interventions show large differences in the way mindfulness is conceptualized and practiced. The decision to consider such practices as unitary or as distinct phenomena will probably influence the direction of future research.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Mindfulness, defined as the ability to maintain non-judgemental awareness of present experiences, has emerged as an important predictor of mental well-being. In this study we investigated the cognitive / neurophysiological mechanisms of inhibitory control and response monitoring, considered to be important factors underpinning mindfulness. Participants performed a typical Go/NoGo task while the 64-channel EEG was recorded. Their task was to respond with speeded button presses to standard stimuli and to withhold responses to less frequent lures. The mean amplitudes of a second negative ERP component, peaking around 250 ms after stimulus onset (N2) with a maximum at fronto-central sites, were significantly larger for lures than for standards. Similarly, the following positive component (P3), peaking around 370 ms with a slightly more anterior topography, was enlarged for lures. Interestingly, for withheld responses these components showed variations that depended on the self-reported levels of mindfulness, assessed with the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire: Comparing higher to lower levels of mindfulness, the N2 was significantly reduced, while the P3 was enlarged. The enlarged N2 component in NoGo trials is considered to reflect inhibitory mechanisms, while the P3 has been linked to response monitoring and possibly the preparation for subsequent trials. The pattern of results may thus indicate that higher levels of mindfulness are linked to more efficient inhibitory processes, followed by a more elaborate evaluation of one's own response behaviour. Building on these findings, we predict that meditation practices that foster mindfulness are likely to improve inhibitory and response monitoring mechanisms, partially explaining their wide-ranging beneficial effects. Funding: Funded by the BIAL Foundation (to PM) and a scholarship by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Education (to JPP).

How does mindfulness practice promote positive psychological change?
Publication year: 2011

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
An ever-growing number of studies are confirming the efficacy of mindfulness-based meditations and more general mindfulness-based interventions in alleviating a variety of psychological problems and chronic diseases. However, the understanding of the underlying psychological processes that promote positive change is still very limited. In our own research we currently focus on the role of habitual thinking and its interplay with emotion regulation. In line with several theoretical assumptions we conceptualize the development of mindfulness in terms of a process-oriented approach, changing how thoughts, emotions and physical sensations are experienced rather than what thoughts or emotions and sensations are experienced. The talk aims to introduce our theoretical framework.

Regular, brief mindfulness meditation practice improves electrophysiological markers of attentional control
Publication year: 2012
URL:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3277272/
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Mindfulness-based meditation practices involve various attentional skills, including the ability to sustain and focus ones attention. During a simple mindful breathing practice, sustained attention is required to maintain focus on the breath while cognitive control is required to detect mind wandering. We thus hypothesized that regular, brief mindfulness training would result in improvements in the self-regulation of attention and foster changes in neuronal activity related to attentional control. A longitudinal randomized control group EEG study was conducted. At baseline (T1), 40 meditation naïve participants were randomized into a wait list group and a meditation group, who received three hours mindfulness meditation training. Twenty-eight participants remained in the final analysis. At T1, after eight weeks (T2) and after 16 weeks (T3), all participants performed a computerized Stroop task (a measure of attentional control) while the 64-channel EEG was recorded. Between T1 and T3 the meditators were requested to meditate daily for 10 min. Event-related potential (ERP) analysis highlighted two between group effects that developed over the course of the 16-week mindfulness training. An early effect at left and right posterior sites 160–240 ms post-stimulus indicated that meditation practice improved the focusing of attentional resources. A second effect at central posterior sites 310–380 ms post-stimulus reflects that meditation practice reduced the recruitment of resources during object recognition processes, especially for incongruent stimuli. Scalp topographies and source analyses (Variable Resolution Electromagnetic Tomography, VARETA) indicate relevant changes in neural sources, pertaining to left medial and lateral occipitotemporal areas for the early effect and right lateral occipitotemporal and inferior temporal areas for the later effect. The results suggest that mindfulness meditation may alter the efficiency of allocating cognitive resources, leading to improved self-regulation of attention.

Neural mechanisms of attentional control in mindfulness meditation
Publication year: 2013

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The scientific interest in meditation and mindfulness practice has recently seen an unprecedented surge. After an initial phase of presenting beneficial effects of mindfulness practice in various domains, research is now seeking to unravel the underlying psychological and neurophysiological mechanisms. Advances in understanding these processes are required for improving and fine-tuning mindfulness-based interventions that target specific conditions such as eating disorders or attention deficit hyperactivity disorders. This review presents a theoretical framework that emphasizes the central role of attentional control mechanisms in the development of mindfulness skills. It discusses the phenomenological level of experience during meditation, the different attentional functions that are involved, and relates these to the brain networks that subserve these functions. On the basis of currently available empirical evidence specific processes as to how attention exerts its positive influence are considered and it is concluded that meditation practice appears to positively impact attentional functions by improving resource allocation processes. As a result, attentional resources are allocated more fully during early processing phases which subsequently enhance further processing. Neural changes resulting from a pure form of mindfulness practice that is central to most mindfulness programs are considered from the perspective that they constitute a useful reference point for future research. Furthermore, possible interrelations between the improvement of attentional control and emotion regulation skills are discussed.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Interests in study the underlying mechanisms of Mindfulness have increase in recent years. Mindfulness is understood as the ability to maintain non-judgemental awareness of present experiences, which is related to cognitive control. In this study we investigate the relation between the mechanisms of conflict resolution and error monitoring and mindfulness. Participants performed a Flanker task, while we register the EEG. Reaction times, accuracy of response and the ERP component related to the conflict resolution (N2) and error monitoring (ERN) where analyzed. In Flanker task the N2 component is considered to reflect conflict resolution processes, while the ERN has been linked Error Monitoring. Related to Stimuli-Locked ERP, we found a negative fronto-central component which highest amplitude was found around 350ms after stimulus onset (N2). This negativity was significantly larger for incongruent than for congruent. Regarding the Response-Locked ERP, we found a negative deflection peaking around 50ms after response (ERN), which was significantly larger for incorrect than correct answers. These effects were correlated with the level of mindfulness assessed with the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ). We found a negative correlation between mindfulness level and the amplitude of the N2, while a positive correlation with the amplitude of the ERN was found. Results indicate that high levels of mindfulness are linked to more efficient cognitive control hence fewer resources are needed for conflict resolution. Results also suggest that the higher levels of mindfulness enhance behavioural and mental monitoring. These cognitive control processes have been related to more efficient emotional regulation, and can help us to understand the beneficial effect of mindfulnes Funding: Supported by Founding BES-2009-017932 of the Program of Formación de Personal Investigador (FPI) of the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, Spain.

Objectives: Mindfulness based meditation practices involve various attentional skills, including the
ability to sustain and focus one’s attention. During a simple mindful breathing practice, sustained
attention is required to maintain focus on the breath while cognitive control is required to detect
mind wandering. As the refinement of attentional functions is considered to significantly
contribute to the positive effects of meditation practice, the aim of this project was to investigate
whether brief regular mindfulness meditation practice would result in improvements in the self
regulation of attention and foster changes in neuronal activity related to attentional control.
Methods: A longitudinal randomised control group EEG study was conducted. At baseline (T1), 40

Discussion and Conclusions: The results suggest that mindfulness meditation may alter the
efficiency of allocating cognitive resources, leading to improved self regulation of attention. That
meditating for only 10 minutes per day leads to significant changes in neural activity highlights the
potential mindfulness practice may have for the everyday user.

Title: BIAL Grants
Start date: 1994
History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Mindfulness meditation is thought to lead to positive changes in cognitive and affective functioning. However, the mechanisms underlying these changes are not well understood. One reason for this is that so far only very few studies considered the effects of specific meditation practices. We thus investigated the effects of engaging in one specific form of mindfulness meditation for a brief time period on behavioral and neural indicators of inhibitory control and metacognition. Performance on the Go/No-Go task and concurrent neural activity (EEG) was assessed before and after participants engaged in 3 weeks of mindful breath awareness meditation. Compared to a waitlist control group, meditation training enhanced the N2 event-related potential in No-Go trials and the error-related negativity (ERN) after error responses. As these two components reflect conflict and response monitoring, respectively, our results support the notion that mindfulness meditation improves metacognitive processes. The changes in the ERN were correlated with the accumulated amount of meditation time, highlighting the importance of meditation practice. Furthermore, meditation improved a behavioral marker of impulsive responding, indicating the relevance of mindfulness-based approaches for supporting health-related behaviors that are associated with deficits in impulsive control, such as substance abuse or over-eating. This study demonstrated that investigating one particular meditation practice rather than complex mindfulness-based interventions can contribute to a deeper understanding of mindfulness meditation mechanisms.
