Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
In this project, we implemented the psychophysiological concept of the orienting response (OR) in the investigation of anomalous correlations between physiological activity and events conventionally considered as unperceivable. We questioned whether the subjective significance of an object for one partner of an emotionally related pair modulates the OR in the second, spatially separated partner when he or she is confronted with a picture of the same object.
In the first main study, we investigated 50 participant pairs in a modified Guilty Knowledge Test. In order to (a) prevent a confound of physiological responses with answering behavior, (b) implement a synchronistic timing, and (c) increase a possible anomalous effect, we investigated 48 participant pairs in a modified guessing task in the second main study. This task was tested with 48 participants in a pretest study.
Taken together, results of the three studies provided no evidence for anomalous correlations of physiological activity and events conventionally considered as unperceivable. Analyses of electrodermal response amplitudes, heart rate changes, respiratory changes and pulse activity of the investigated participants revealed no significant differences of the OR (d < 0.15, p > .1) between objects with and without particular significance for the partner. Guessing rates were at chance expectation (p > .1). No influence of moderator variables (connectedness between participants, paranormal belief) was found. Methodological analyses provided evidence for an artifact in prior studies of this research approach: Effects of serial positioning can lead to a biased estimation of the alpha level, whenever physiological responses to stimuli presented serially are analyzed.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Prior studies seem to provide evidence for an anomalous increase in heart rate during the presentation of objects that were later randomly chosen and presented as target objects in a forced-choice guessing task. We investigated 48 participant pairs in a modified paradigm: We implemented a spatially separated partner who handled the particular target object during each of 14 blocks of the task while trying to influence the participant under physiological investigation, by mental means alone. Response differences between targets and nontargets were evaluated by measuring heart rate changes, electrodermal response amplitudes, respiratory changes, and pulse activity. Paranormal belief and partner connectedness were investigated as possible moderator variables for physiological response differences and hit rate. The analyses did not show evidence of anomalous physiological response differences between targets and nontargets (effect sizes < .2, p values> .1) or any influences of moderator variables. Methodological analyses provided evidence for a serial position effect in prior studies; this observation might point toward a particular significance of the last object presentation preceding the prompt to guess. In order to prevent this confound and to avoid biased estimation of the alpha level, future studies should balance stimulus positions.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Objectives: We investigated anomalous correlations between physiological activity and events
conventionally considered as unperceivable by means of the concept of the orienting response
(OR). The physiological components of the OR are modulated by particular significance of stimuli.
We questioned whether the subjective significance of an object for one partner of an emotionally
related pair modulates the OR in a spatially separated partner confronted with a picture of the
object.
Method: In the first study, we used a modified Guilty Knowledge Test (n = 52 pairs). In the second
study, we used a modified guessing task with partner event (n = 48 pairs). This task was tested in a
pretest study (n = 48). Electrodermal response amplitudes, heart rate changes, respiratory
changes, and pulse activity were measured. We tested both paradigms for a confound of
physiological responses with stimulus positions.
Results: Analyses revealed no physiological response differences between objects with and
without particular significance for the partner (d < 0.15, p > .1). Methodological analyses showed
significant response differences between stimulus positions. In case of unbalanced stimulus
positions, the estimation of the alpha level was biased.
Conclusions: This project provided no evidence for a modulation of the OR of the participants by
the particular significance objects had for their partner. No other evidence for an anomalous effect
was found. Analyses of the first and the pretest study were possibly biased by unbalanced stimulus
positions; these were avoided in the second study.
Discussion: Unbalanced stimulus positions might have biased the alpha level in prior studies,
which should be avoided by balancing in future studies. With respect to the OR concept,
implications of this project suggest to study in more detail the influences of decision making and
information processing on the OR.

Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Title: BIAL Grants
Start date: 1994
History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This study aimed to investigate anomalously modulated physiological responses as an indicator of anomalous interactions between emotionally related partners. For this purpose, we used a modified version of the Guilty Knowledge Test. In this experiment, partners were spatially separated. One partner (Participant 1) was confronted with probe objects such that these objects gained particular significance for Participant 1. The other partner (Participant 2) was investigated for differences in their physiological responses to pictures of probe objects and pictures of objects that Participant 1 had not been confronted with (irrelevant objects). In the case of an anomalous interaction between participants, the particular significance of probe objects was expected to modulate the physiological responses of Participant 2. Physiological variables consisted of electrodermal activity, heart rate, respiratory activity, and pulse activity. Behavioral variables consisted of reaction times and hit rate in a guessing task. Paranormal beliefs and connectedness of participants were assessed, via questionnaires, as possible moderators for the performance of Participant 2. Correlations between questionnaire scores and physiological as well as behavioral variables were analyzed. Overall, the analyses revealed no anomalously modulated physiological responses or other indicators for anomalous interaction between participants. Methodological remarks and implications for future studies are discussed.
