    • The Boolean operator AND between the terms is assumed by default. If you enter the words European Union in the search box, the system returns all records in which both words occur, regardless of their order.
    • When entering a set of words in quotes, e.g "european union", all records containing the literal term "European Union" will be retrieved.
  • Search by access fields (e.g. author, title, etc.):
    • To direct your search, choose the field in which you want to search the word or expression.
    • Search in the field assumes by default the expression in quotes, e.g. European union will retrieve all records containing the literal term "European Union"
  • To perform more complex searches, additional words or expressions may be added.
  • If you want to refine the search results, you can always access the link "search" in the upper left corner of the page of search results.
  • The search engine is not case sensitive. For example, the word congress has the same meaning that Congress or CONGRESS.
  • To truncate your search expression, use the $ character
  • You can filter the results of your search by a date or date range, filling the appropriate boxes.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Results from a series of training experiments suggest that measurable improvements in behavioral performance on psi tasks cannot be trained using the 15-day regimen used here, nor using a longer-term (23-211 day) regimen. Moving on to a series of experiments in untrained participants, we examined heart pulse period and skin conductance (SC) during remote stare detection and precognition tasks. In the first of three remote stare detection experiments, we found a significant increase in pulse period when participants were covertly observed versus when they were not observed; this was not replicated in the remaining two experiments. We also performed five precognition experiments (using a guess-the-future-target task); behavioral performance was at chance. In the first and second experiments, we found a significant increase in pulse period during the ten seconds preceding feedback indicating the guess was correct, but this was not replicated in the third experiment. In a fourth experiment, we found a significant SC difference preceding correct vs. incorrect feedback for one task but not another task, and no heart rate difference for either task. The fifth experiment showed no significant heart rate difference, but a near-significant SC difference in the two feedback conditions. A post-hoc analysis of data from all precognition experiments taken only from the first trial performed (to rule out expectation and other order effects) revealed a large, statistically significant anticipatory SC effect in men, a trend toward an opposing effect in women, and a statistically significant sex x feedback interaction. Based on these results, we reached several conclusions that will influence future examinations of these phenomena.

Predictive physiological anticipation preceding seemingly unpredictable stimuli: A meta-analysis
Publication year: 2012
URL:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3478568/pdf/fpsyg-03-00390.pdf
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This meta-analysis of 26 reports published between 1978 and 2010 tests an unusual hypothesis: for stimuli of two or more types that are presented in an order designed to be unpredictable and that produce different post-stimulus physiological activity, the direction of pre-stimulus physiological activity reflects the direction of post-stimulus physiological activity, resulting in an unexplained anticipatory effect. The reports we examined used one of two paradigms: (1) randomly ordered presentations of arousing vs. neutral stimuli, or (2) guessing tasks with feedback (correct vs. incorrect). Dependent variables included: electrodermal activity, heart rate, blood volume, pupil dilation, electroencephalographic activity, and blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) activity. To avoid including data hand-picked from multiple different analyses, no post hoc experiments were considered. The results reveal a significant overall effect with a small effect size [fixed effect: overall ES=0.21, 95% CI=0.15–0.27, z=6.9, p<2.7×10-12; random effects: overall (weighted) ES=0.21, 95% CI=0.13–0.29, z=5.3, p<5.7×10-8]. Higher quality experiments produced a quantitatively larger effect size and a greater level of significance than lower quality studies. The number of contrary unpublished reports that would be necessary to reduce the level of significance to chance (p>0.05) was conservatively calculated to be 87 reports. We explore alternative explanations and examine the potential linkage between this unexplained anticipatory activity and other results demonstrating meaningful pre-stimulus activity preceding behaviorally relevant events. We conclude that to further examine this currently unexplained anticipatory activity, multiple replications arising from different laboratories using the same methods are necessary. The cause of this anticipatory activity, which undoubtedly lies within the realm of natural physical processes (as opposed to supernatural or paranormal ones), remains to be determined.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Physiological responses to arousing (vs. calm) stimuli arriving 3-7 seconds in the future have been described in peer-reviewed journals using five different physiological measures in at least four different laboratories. However, only a handful of these have used tasks in which participants must perform conscious guessing at targets. In order to eventually improve performance at intuitive guessing, understanding the mechanisms of physiological presentiment effects during the performance of behavioral guessing tasks is critical.
To address this gap in knowledge, we performed three experiments. Our hypothesis for all three experiments was that two measures of autonomic state, heart pulse period or inter-beat-interval (IBI) and skin conductance (SC), would both show distinct and significantly different patterns associated with future correct vs. incorrect guesses in a guessing task. In the first two experiments we show that at the group level, significant differences in heart period are observed, such that IBI is higher preceding a correct guess than an incorrect guess. However, at least at the group level, there was no SC difference associated with correctness or incorrectness of a future guess in either of the two experiments. The third experiment found no significant anticipatory effects. Finally, an exploratory analysis comparing data from all females to all males across the four experiments showed that while at the group level SC was not responsive to correctness of future guesses in any experiment, a robust sex difference in SC anticipatory responses exists, in which males have increased skin conductance preceding correct vs. incorrect guesses, while females show the reverse pattern.
None of the significant effects in any of the experiments or the post-hoc sex difference analysis could be explained by expectation bias. Reasons for the lack of a significant effect in the third experiment are discussed. Overall, the results support the hypothesis.

Title: BIAL Grants
Start date: 1994
History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Objective: First we aimed determine whether conscious awareness of future events could be
trained. Next we used physiological markers to determine whether humans have subconscious
awareness of future events.
Methods: In the training experiment, participants were placed into 1 of 3 groups: trained on a
precognition task (N=3), trained on a biofeedback program (N=9), and no training (N=3). The two
training groups received fifteen 30-min training sessions over 2-3 months.
On each of 25 trials in the physiology experiments, participants were presented with 4 photos and
were asked to select a “target” image. The software then used a hardware random number
generator to randomly choose one of the four photos as the target image and a full-screen version
of this image was displayed. The dependent variables were the mean normalized heart rate and
skin conductance during the 10 seconds preceding the presentation of feedback.
Results: In the training experiments, measurable improvements in precognition were not found for
either of the training regimens we used.
For the physiology experiments, results were inconsistent. In a first (N=39) and second (N=15)
precognition experiment, skin conductance data revealed no effect, but mean heart rate
decreased significantly prior to correct (vs. incorrect) responses. However, a third (N=30) and
fourth (N=29) experiment did not reveal any significant results.
To address across-gender variability as well as potential influences from previous trials, in a posthoc
analysis we combined physiology data only from the first trials of each session in the four
experiments, separately for the two genders. There were no heart rate effects. Data from men
revealed a significant increase in skin conductance preceding correct vs. incorrect trials. Data from
women showed an opposing trend (sex x correctness interaction: p<0.007).
Conclusion and Discussion: Conscious awareness of future events is not learnable using the
training regimens used here. Subconscious awareness of future events in guessing tasks seems to
be a weak phenomenon that can be masked by both inter-individual and inter-trial variability.
Future work investigating the mechanisms of precognition should focus on subconscious
awareness, examine male and female performance separately (Radin and Lobach 2007), and
account for effects of previous trials.

Precognition at the boundaries: An empirical review and theoretical discussion

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The rigorous scientific study of precognition, the human ability to accurately predict future events that are not already predictable based on information about the past or from the five senses, spans the last 90 years. This review describes different types of precognition, underscores the basic principles of precognition research, and discusses the evidence for and potential mechanisms of two very different forms of precognition: 1) mostly unconscious precognition with short lead times (e.g., presentiment) and 2) mostly conscious precognition with longer lead times (e.g., precognitive remote viewing). I describe two potential models to explain each of these forms of precognition, along with ideas for empirical tests of each one.
