Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
The main objectives of this work were to test if it was possible to conciliate Virtual Reality techniques with the recording of neurophysiological data, and to develop and validate new methodological paradigms to study the psychobiology of emotion.
The first study consisted in selecting 3D stimuli similar to those used in the traditional methodological approach to study emotion. We selected 131 stimuli, which were normalized and validated using the Self-Assessment Manikin, in a sample of 214 healthy subjects. The results obtained were consistent with previous studies conducted with 2D stimuli, allowing the development of a Database of Affective 3D Pictures.
In the second study, we tested if the induction of emotions with 3D stimulation techniques caused more intense emotional responses than with 2D techniques. To that end we recorded behavioral and peripheral physiological measures associated with the visualization of the three Scenarios in two modalities (2D vs.3D).
Results suggested that 3D visualization causes more intense emotional responses.
The third study aimed at testing the interference of emotional information in the neurocognitive processing, through Event-related Potential analysis in a dual-task auditory oddball paradigm. Our results showed that emotional induction through 3D stimulation recruits more attentional resources than through 2D stimulation, causing a greater interference in the cognitive processing.
Finally, in the fourth study, we presented indexes of brain activation obtained through Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) when subjects were exposed to the Scenarios in two modalities (2D vs. 3D). Results indicate that 3D visualization is associated to higher activation of the amygdala complex.

Dados Normativos da Indução de Emoções em Ambientes de Realidade Virtual
Publication year: 2011
URL:
http://revista.saude-mental.net/index.php?article=1991&visual=17
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Objectives: The traditional method of induction of emotion in the investigation of mental illness
with affective disorders refers to the display of photographs contained in conventional image
banks. Features like the feeling of presence, immersion and interaction, not to be contemplated in
this type of methodological paradigms, limit the ecological validity and perhaps the emotional
loading. The purpose of this study was to verify whether the intensity of emotional response
induced by 3D is superior to that obtained in 2D traditional paradigms, aiming at its application in
basic and applied research to mental health.
Methods: 30 healthy participants viewed stimuli that induce emotion in two visualization
methods: 2D vs 3D. The visualization of the stimuli was performed in a Virtual Theatre with active
stereoscopic projection using the shutter glasses. The emotional valence was manipulated March 2
conditions - unpleasant vs. neutral vs. pleasant. Each stimulus was displayed for 15sec and sorted
through the pictographic scales Arousal and valence of the Self-Assessment Maniquin (Lang, 1980).
Results: The results showed that visualization of 3D stimuli cause greater arousal responses to
pleasant and unpleasant conditions.
Conclusion: Immersion, presence and possibility of interaction due to stimulation by 3D
technology, are key aspects that can lead to increased intensity of the emotional response of the
subject, approaching it more from the contingencies of real life. Thus, the use of 3D technology
shows great potential for the study of emotion in people with such disorders.

Effects of emotional valence and three-dimensionality of visual stimuli on brain activation: An fMRI study
Publication year: 2013
URL:
https://content.iospress.com/articles/neurorehabilitation/nre987
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND:
Examining changes in brain activation linked with emotion-inducing stimuli is essential to the study of emotions. Due to the ecological potential of techniques such as virtual reality (VR), inspection of whether brain activation in response to emotional stimuli can be modulated by the three-dimensional (3D) properties of the images is important.
OBJECTIVE: The current study sought to test whether the activation of brain areas involved in the emotional processing of scenarios of different valences can be modulated by 3D. Therefore, the focus was made on the interaction effect between emotion-inducing stimuli of different emotional valences (pleasant, unpleasant and neutral valences) and visualization types (2D, 3D). However, main effects were also analyzed.
METHODS: The effect of emotional valence and visualization types and their interaction were analyzed through a 3 × 2 repeated measures ANOVA. Post-hoc t-tests were performed under a ROI-analysis approach. RESULTS: The results show increased brain activation for the 3D affective-inducing stimuli in comparison with the same stimuli in 2D scenarios, mostly in cortical and subcortical regions that are related to emotional processing, in addition to visual processing regions.
CONCLUSIONS: This study has the potential of clarify brain mechanisms involved in the processing of emotional stimuli (scenarios' valence) and their interaction with three-dimensionality.

Publication year: 2014

http://www.psychnology.org/File/PNJ12(1-2)/PSYCHNOLOGY_JOURNAL_12_1_2_DORES.pdf
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Studying changes in brain activation according to the valence of emotion-inducing stimuli is essential in the research on emotions. Due to the ecological potential of virtual reality, it is also important to examine whether brain activation in response to emotional stimuli can be modulated by the three-dimensional (3D) properties of the images. This study uses functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging to compare differences between 3D and standard (2D) visual stimuli in the activation of emotion-related brain areas. The stimuli were organized in three virtual-reality scenarios, each with a different emotional valence (pleasant, unpleasant and neutral). The scenarios were presented in a pseudo-randomized order in the two visualization modes to twelve healthy males. Data were analyzed through a GLM-based fixed effects procedure. Unpleasant and neutral stimuli activated the right amygdala more strongly when presented in 3D than in 2D. These results suggest that 3D stimuli, when used as “building blocks” for virtual environments, can induce increased emotional loading, as shown here through neuroimaging.

Attention allocation to 2D and 3D emotion-inducing scenes: A neurophysiological study
Publication year: 2019
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
Past research on emotions was mostly supported on emotion inducing slides, but studies in the field are moving towards more ecological stimuli, including 3D stimuli and virtual reality scenes. The present study aims to compare the effects of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) emotion-inducing scenes in the modulation of attention, as indexed by the amplitude of the P3 event-related component in a dual-task paradigm. We recorded the EEG signal of 31 healthy male participants performing an active auditory oddball task, while simultaneously observing pleasant, unpleasant and neutral scenes in 2D or 3D. We analyzed the effects of emotional valence and visualization mode in the mean amplitude of the P3 component at Pz. The results revealed than revealed that 2D scenarios were as effective as 3D stimuli in capturing attention resources and this effect was consistently observed in all emotional scenes.

BIAL Foundation Archive
Start date: 1994
History:
The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Title: BIAL Grants
Start date: 1994
History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The goal of this study was to propose a new functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) paradigm using a language-free adaptation of a 2-back working memory task to avoid cultural and educational bias. We additionally provide an index of the validity of the proposed paradigm and test whether the experimental task discriminates the behavioural performances of healthy participants from those of individuals with working memory deficits. Ten healthy participants and nine patients presenting working memory (WM) deficits due to acquired brain injury (ABI) performed the developed task. To inspect whether the paradigm activates brain areas typically involved in visual working memory (VWM), brain activation of the healthy participants was assessed with fMRIs. To examine the task's capacity to discriminate behavioural data, performances of the healthy participants in the task were compared with those of ABI patients. Data were analysed with GLM-based random effects procedures and t-tests. We found an increase of the BOLD signal in the specialized areas of VWM. Concerning behavioural performances, healthy participants showed the predicted pattern of more hits, less omissions and a tendency for fewer false alarms, more self-corrected responses, and faster reaction times, when compared with subjects presenting WM impairments. The results suggest that this task activates brain areas involved in VWM and discriminates behavioural performances of clinical and non-clinical groups. It can thus be used as a research methodology for behavioural and neuroimaging studies of VWM in block-design paradigms.
