Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Despite decades of research, effects of different types of meditation on electroencephalographic (EEG) activity are still being defined. We compared practitioners of three different meditation traditions (Vipassana, Himalayan Yoga and Shoonya) with a control group during a meditative and instructed mind-wandering (IMW) block. All meditators showed higher 60-110 Hz gamma activity than control subjects when meditating. This effect was positively correlated with meditation experience. Independent component analysis was used to show that gamma activity did not originate in eye or muscle artifacts. In addition, we observed higher 7-11 Hz alpha activity in the Vipassana group during meditation compared to all other groups. We showed that meditation practice evokes changes in the EEG gamma frequency range that are common to a variety of meditation practices. Our results emphasize the value of including controls and groups of different meditation traditions in neuroscientific studies of meditation.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
One of the exciting developments in the cross-cultural study of human consciousness consists of studying non-classical conscious states such as self-induced transcendental states as produced by intensive meditation practice. However, despite decades of interest in this field and renewed interest over the past 10 years, a major current challenge in meditation research continues to be the delineation of the distinct neural correlates to meditative experience across the varied meditative practice types. Different methods have been used with different groups of meditators producing inconclusive results. A prime goal of our research is to assess how attentionally-demanding and emotional stimuli are processed in a range of practices. Here, for the first time, the same protocol will be used to compare different meditation practices. One control group is compared to expert expert Vipassana practitioners, expert transcendental meditation practitioners, and expert practitioners in the Himalayan tradition. To characterize brain dynamics associated with meditation modulation of external stimuli, we are using 64-channel electro-encephalography recordings as well as peripheral autonomic nervous system recordings. The tasks we are using involve auditory, visual, somato-sensory (tactile) and emotional tasks. Each subject performs 7 different experiments over a 4-hour period. All recording are performed in Rishikesh, India and have been granted ethical approval both by Indian ethical committees and the University of San Diego California (IRB 090731).
Here we present preliminary results on 30 subjects from the Hymmalayan tradition with 30 aged-matched controls. We compared meditators and controls when they were performing a control thinking task and when they were meditating. Preliminary results indicate that both mediators and controls tend to respond more strongly to external stimuli when they meditate compared to when they are performing a control thinking task. This effect is more important for meditators than for control subjects. Based on these results, we suggest that meditation correspond to a state of higher alertness.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Objectives: Despite decades of electro-encephalography (EEG) research on meditators, the basic
effects of meditation on EEG are still being defined. One of the reason why no consensus has been
reached is that there is a large number of meditation practices. Is it reasonable to assume that all
meditation will lead to brain activity that is identical in all traditions? In this current study, we
addresses the hypothesis that different types of meditation lead to different neural correlates.
Methods: We compare 3 types of meditations and a group of control meditation-naive
participants. Meditation groups included a group practicing focused meditation on body
sensations (Vipassana), a group practicing focused meditation on mantra repetition (Hymalayan
tradition), a group praciticing open awareness meditation centered on pure awareness (Isha
tradition). Each group had 16 gender-matched participants of similar age range. Participants were
asked to practice 20 minutes of meditation followed or preceded by 20 minutes of instructed mind
wandering where participants were asked to voluntarily remember autobiographical events.
Results: We did not find state effects between the meditation and the instructed mind wandering
tasks for any of the groups. However, we observed difference between the groups. Meditators of
all traditions tended to show higher gamma activity than control subjects during the meditation
period. The effect was significant for Isha and Hymalayan meditators and a trend was observed for
Vipassana meditators. This gamma activity was independent of muscle activity as isolated using
the independent component analysis algorithm. In addition, we observed higher alpha activity for
the Vipassana group during meditation compared to all other groups.
Conclusions: We have shown that regular meditation practice evokes traits changes in the
electrical oscillations of the brain, that can be different from one meditation technique to another.
Our results emphasize the need to include meditation-naive control participants and groups of
different meditation traditions following the same experimental protocol for studies aiming at
characterizing the neural correlates of the meditative state.
Discussion: Our results are consistent with previous studies. Higher gamma power was observed in
Vipasanna meditators and tibetan meditators compared to control subjects.
Publications: Our results will be published in Frontier of Neuroscience special issue on Neural
Effects of Mindfulness/Contemplative Training. Our paper has been invited by the editor of this
special issue in 2011. The article will be published in 2012.

All recording are performed in Rishikesh, India and have been granted ethical approval both by Indian ethical committees and the University of San Diego California (IRB 090731). Here we present results where we compared meditators in different traditions and controls when they were performing a control thinking task and when they were meditating. Our results indicate that both mediators and controls tend to respond more strongly to external stimuli when they meditate compared to when they are performing a control thinking task. This effect is more important for meditators than for control subjects. Based on these results, we suggest that meditation correspond to a state of higher alertness. This is the first cross-cultural psychophysics study of meditation to our knowledge

Increased gamma brainwave amplitude compared to control in three different meditation traditions

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Despite decades of research, effects of different types of meditation on electroencephalographic (EEG) activity are still being defined. We compared practitioners of three different meditation traditions (Vipassana, Himalayan Yoga and Isha Shoonya) with a control group during a meditative and instructed mind-wandering (IMW) block. All meditators showed higher parieto-occipital 60–110 Hz gamma amplitude than control subjects as a trait effect observed during meditation and when considering meditation and IMW periods together. Moreover, this gamma power was positively correlated with participants meditation experience. Independent component analysis was used to show that gamma activity did not originate in eye or muscle artifacts. In addition, we observed higher 7–11 Hz alpha activity in the Vipassana group compared to all the other groups during both meditation and instructed mind wandering and lower 10–11 Hz activity in the Himalayan yoga group during meditation only. We showed that meditation practice is correlated to changes in the EEG gamma frequency range that are common to a variety of meditation practices.

Meditation and the wandering mind: A theoretical framework of underlying neurocognitive mechanisms
Publication year: 2020

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
During the practice of meditation, the tendency of the mind to wander away from the object of focus is ubiquitous. The occurrence of mind wandering in the context of meditation provides individuals a unique and intimate opportunity to closely examine the nature of the wandering mind by cultivating an awareness of ongoing thought patterns, while simultaneously aiming to cultivate equanimity (evenness of temper or disposition) and compassion toward the content of thoughts, interpretations, and bodily sensations. In this article we provide a theoretical framework that highlights the neurocognitive mechanisms by which contemplative practices influence the neural and phenomenological processes underlying spontaneous thought. Our theoretical model focuses on several converging mechanisms: the role of meta-awareness in facilitating an increased moment-to-moment awareness of spontaneous thought processes, the effects of meditation practice on key structures underlying both the top-down cognitive processes and bottom-up sensory processes implicated in attention and emotion regulation, and the influence of contemplative practice on the neural substrates underlying perception and perceptual decoupling.

Closed-loop frontal midline theta neurofeedback: A novel approach for training focused-attention meditation
Publication year: 2020

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7344173/
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Cortical oscillations serve as an index of both sensory and cognitive processes and represent one of the most promising candidates for training and targeting the top-down mechanisms underlying executive functions. Research findings suggest that theta (theta) oscillations (3-7 Hz) recorded over frontal-midline electrodes are broadly associated with a number of higher-order cognitive processes and may serve as the mechanistic backbone for cognitive control. Frontal-midline theta (FM theta) oscillations have also been shown to inversely correlate with activity in the default mode network (DMN), a network in the brain linked to spontaneous thought processes such as mind-wandering and rumination. In line with these findings, we previously observed increased FM theta oscillations in expert meditation practitioners during reported periods of focused-attention meditation practice when compared to periods of mind-wandering. In an effort to narrow the explanatory gap by directly connecting observed neurophysiological activity in the brain to the phenomenological nature of reported experience, we designed a methodologically novel and adaptive neurofeedback protocol with the aim of modulating FM theta while having meditation novice participants implement breath-focus strategies derived from focused-attention mediation practices. Participants who received eight sessions of the adaptive FM theta-meditation neurofeedback protocol were able to significantly modulate FM theta over frontal electrodes using focused-attention meditation strategies relative to their baseline by the end of the training and demonstrated significantly faster reaction times on correct trials during the n-back working memory task assessed before and after the FM theta-meditation neurofeedback protocol. No significant differences in frontal theta activity or behavior were observed in the active control participants who received age and gender matched sham neurofeedback. These findings help lay the groundwork for the development of brain training protocols and neurofeedback applications that aim to train features of the mental states and traits associated with focused-attention meditation.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
One outstanding question in the contemplative science literature relates to the direct impact of meditation experience on the monitoring of internal states and its respective correspondence with neural activity. In particular, to what extent does meditation influence the awareness, duration and frequency of the tendency of the mind to wander. To assess the relation between mind wandering and meditation, we tested 2 groups of meditators, one with a moderate level of experience (non-expert) and those who are well advanced in their practice (expert). We designed a novel paradigm using self-reports of internal mental states based on an experiential sampling probe paradigm presented during similar to 1 h of seated concentration meditation to gain insight into the dynamic measures of electroencephalography (EEG) during absorption in meditation as compared to reported mind wandering episodes. Our results show that expert meditation practitioners report a greater depth and frequency of sustained meditation, whereas non-expert practitioners report a greater depth and frequency of mind wandering episodes. This is one of the first direct behavioral indices of meditation expertise and its associated impact on the reduced frequency of mind wandering, with corresponding EEG activations showing increased frontal midline theta and somatosensory alpha rhythms during meditation as compared to mind wandering in expert practitioners. Frontal midline theta and somatosensory alpha rhythms are often observed during executive functioning, cognitive control and the active monitoring of sensory information. Our study thus provides additional new evidence to support the hypothesis that the maintenance of both internal and external orientations of attention may be maintained by similar neural mechanisms and that these mechanisms may be modulated by meditation training.
