Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Experienced meditators occasionally report experiences of "timelessness," or states of awareness that seem to transcend the usual boundaries of the subjective present. This study explored the nature of such experiences by measuring 32 channels of EEG prior to exposure to unpredictable light and sound stimuli in eight experienced meditators and eight matched controls. The experiment postulated (a) that if some aspect of perception extends into the future, then prestimulus measurements would differ depending on stimuli that were about to be selected by a truly random process, and (b) that such differences would be more apparent in meditators than in non-meditators.
Each of the 32 EEG channels was baseline-adjusted on each trial by the electrical potential averaged from 2 seconds to 1 second pre-stimulus. Then for each channel the average potential was determined from 1 second pre-stimulus to stimulus onset. The resulting means across subjects in each group were compared by stimulus type using randomized permutation procedures and corrected for multiple comparisons using False Discovery Rate. Within the control group, no EEG channels showed significant pre-stimulus differences between light vs. sound stimulus conditions, but within the meditator group 5 of 32 channels showed significant differences (p < 0.05, two-tailed). Comparisons between control and meditator groups showed significant pre-stimulus differences prior to audio tone stimuli in 14 of 32 channels (p < 0.05, two-tailed, of which 8 channels were at p < 0.005, two-tailed). This outcome successfully replicates effects observed in conceptually similar experiments.

This outcome successfully replicates effects reported in earlier experiments, suggesting that sometimes the subjective sense of awareness extending into the future may be ontologically accurate.

The world’s spiritual and religious literature abounds with descriptions of mystical states of consciousness in which perceptions of the boundaries between a separate subject (the self) and object (the other) dissolve. Recent scholarship on these states, by psychologists in collaboration with spiritual practitioners and leaders, have dubbed this type of awareness “nondual,” to reflect the perceived lack of separation between subject and
object. During these states, experiencers often report that their sense of threedimensional space and linear time shifts.
OBJECTIVES:
The overall aim of this project is to investigate neurobiological correlates of nondual states of awareness, and to explore whether perceptions of timelessness are illusions that have a purely subjective impact on those who experience them, or if they are genuinely enhanced levels of awareness that allow experiencers to perceive an ontologically accurate dimension of reality.
METHODS:
To investigate this we are monitoring physiological markers of non-dual states of awareness, and will correlate those markers with performance on an experimental task that provides an unconscious measure of perceptual awareness through time (i.e., a presentiment test). Experienced practitioners of nondual awareness teachings and practices are being compared with matched controls who have had no experience with meditation. EEG frequencies and evoked potentials are being compared 1) in advanced practitioners who are in non-dual states of awareness vs. active control and rest periods, and 2) with non-meditators between periods of imagining such states of consciousness and active control and rest periods. The project will shed light on the neurobiological underpinnings of nondual states of awareness, as well as examining whether these states enhance implicit precognition.
