Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The project focused on understanding how the brain can plastically change as a response to congenital deafness. In particular, we were interested in understanding: 1) whether and how the auditory cortex of the congenitally deaf processed information from the spared senses – and specifically visual input; 2) how that sensory (visual) was organized in the auditory cortex, if at all; and 3) how did that information reached the auditory cortex. That is, how did neuroplasticity change the auditory cortex (and other structures) of the congenitally deaf so that it processes information from different senses.
To do this, we proposed a series of tasks. First we wanted to understand how the auditory cortex of congenitally deaf individuals processed information from the other senses. In particular, could the auditory cortex of the congenitally deaf be neuroplastically modified to be populated by visual information? And if so, would it inherit aspects of the functional organization seen in visual cortex? Almeida and Colleagues (2015; Psychological Science) show that the auditory cortex of the deaf processes visual information and that it represents visual field location – a dimension that is ubiquitous of the visual cortex. We then focused on understanding whether we could see the typical organization of the auditory cortex (tonotopy) in the deaf. Would this organization still be present in the deaf? Striem-Amit, Almeida, and colleagues (2016) demonstrated that deaf individuals continue to show connectivity patterns that allow us to uncover the typical tonotopic organization. These two papers solve the issue of functional organization of the auditory cortex in the deaf, suggesting that this structure suffers strong plasticity that implements the organization of visual properties in its tissue, but also (perhaps partially) maintains the typical connectivity patterns that may give rise to tonotopy.
We then focused on trying to understand how visual information reaches the auditory cortex of the congenitally deaf. We posited that this visual information was reaching the auditory cortex (perhaps in part) via subcortical structures such as the thalamus, and/or the superior and inferior colliculi. We inspected whether this structures presented changes in volume that could be suggestive of a neuroplastic change of the kind that would be implemented if that structure was involved in passing (visual) information differently than in hearing individuals. The data shows that the structure that seems to have been modified in a consistent way in the deaf but not the hearing is the thalamus (Amaral et al, 2016).

Sensory cortices of individuals who are congenitally deprived of a sense can exhibit considerable plasticity and be recruited to process information from the senses that remain intact. Here, we explored whether the auditory cortex of congenitally deaf individuals represents visual field location of a stimulus-a dimension that is represented in early visual areas. We used functional MRI to measure neural activity in auditory and visual cortices of congenitally deaf and hearing humans while they observed stimuli typically used for mapping visual field preferences in visual cortex. We found that the location of a visual stimulus can be successfully decoded from the patterns of neural activity in auditory cortex of congenitally deaf but not hearing individuals. This is particularly true for locations within the horizontal plane and within peripheral vision. These data show that the representations stored within neuroplastically changed auditory cortex can align with dimensions that are typically represented in visual cortex.

Neuroplasticity reflects the brain’s capacity to reorganize itself due to endogenous or exogenous events, including sensory deprivation. The debate on how neuroplasticity emerges and which structures can suffer and regulate neuroplastic
changes is still fierce. It has been shown that in congenitally deaf humans the auditory cortex (AC) can be co-opted to process visual input. But how is this visual information rerouted to AC? Here, we will present a review of the main studies concerning this issue and emphasize the extant hypotheses that focus on the neuroplastic changes observed in congenital deaf individuals at the neural and behavioral level. Finally, we will focus on the role of the sign language in the neuroplasticity presented by congenitally deaf humans and present some of the important implications that these studies may have on the quality of deaf individual.

Congenital deafness causes large changes in the auditory cortex structure and function, such that without early childhood cochlear-implant, profoundly deaf children do not develop intact, high-level, auditory functions. But how is auditory cortex organization affected by congenital, prelingual, and long standing deafness? Does the large-scale topographical organization of the auditory cortex develop in people deaf from birth? And is it retained despite cross-modal plasticity? We identified, using fMRI, topographic tonotopy-based functional connectivity (FC) structure in humans in the core auditory cortex, its extending tonotopic gradients in the belt and even beyond that. These regions show similar FC structure in the congenitally deaf throughout the auditory cortex, including in the language areas. The topographic FC pattern can be identified reliably in the vast majority of the deaf, at the single subject level, despite the absence of hearing-aid use and poor oral language skills. These findings suggest that large-scale tonotopic-based FC does not require sensory experience to develop, and is retained despite life-long auditory deprivation and cross-modal plasticity. Furthermore, as the topographic FC is retained to varying degrees among the deaf subjects, it may serve to predict the potential for auditory rehabilitation using cochlear implants in individual subjects.

It has been shown that the right Auditory Cortex (AC) of congenitally deaf humans is neuroplastically modified in order to represent visual properties of a stimulus. One unresolved question is how this visual information is routed to the AC of congenitally deaf individuals. Here, we performed volumetric analysis of subcortical auditory and visual brains regions – namely the thalamus (along with three thalamic nuclei: the pulvinar, the lateral geniculate nucleus and the medial geniculate nucleus), and the inferior and superior colliculi – in deaf and hearing participants in order to identify which structures may be responsible for relaying visual information toward the altered AC. Because there is a hemispheric asymmetry in the neuroplastic changes observed in the AC of the congenitally deaf, we reasoned that subcortical structures that also showed a similar asymmetry in their total volume could have been enlisted in the effort of relaying visual information to the neuroplastically altered right AC. We show that for deaf, but not for hearing individuals, the right thalamus, right lateral geniculate nucleus and right inferior colliculus are larger than their left counterparts. These results suggest that these subcortical structures may be responsible for rerouting visual information to the AC in congenital deafness.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.

Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Congenitally deaf individuals, compared to hearing individuals, typically show differential performance (improvements or impairments) on certain nonauditory tasks. Concomitantly, their auditory cortex is recruited to process information from the spared senses. Are these compensatory behavioral strategies equally observable across the sensory fields of each particular unaffected sense (e.g., across the full visual field for vision-related compensatory plasticity)? There are neural data in human and nonhuman mammals that may be suggestive of there being a differential processing advantage for stimuli presented in the horizontal visual plane than in the vertical visual plane. To test for these visual field asymmetries in compensatory behavioral performance, we used a direction of motion discrimination task and found that deaf participants were better at determining the direction of motion of dot patterns presented in the horizontal plane compared to those presented in the vertical plane and in the center-that is, we show that the neuroplasticity-induced bias toward the horizontal plane is also present in the behavioral advantage that deaf individuals present. These data may suggest that the neuroplastically changed auditory cortex of deaf individuals is functionally responsible for the enhanced processing of information from the spared senses.
