    • When entering a set of words in quotes, e.g "european union", all records containing the literal term "European Union" will be retrieved.
  • Search by access fields (e.g. author, title, etc.):
    • To direct your search, choose the field in which you want to search the word or expression.
    • Search in the field assumes by default the expression in quotes, e.g. European union will retrieve all records containing the literal term "European Union"
  • To perform more complex searches, additional words or expressions may be added.
  • If you want to refine the search results, you can always access the link "search" in the upper left corner of the page of search results.
  • The search engine is not case sensitive. For example, the word congress has the same meaning that Congress or CONGRESS.

Interoception and mental health: A roadmap
Publication year: 2017

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Interoception refers to the process by which the nervous system senses, interprets, and integrates signals originating from within the body, providing a moment-by-moment mapping of the body’s internal landscape across conscious and unconscious levels. Interoceptive signaling has been considered a component process of reflexes, urges, feelings, drives, adaptive responses, cognitive and emotional experiences, highlighting its contributions to the maintenance of homeostatic functioning, body regulation, and survival. Dysfunction of interoception is increasingly recognized as an important component of different mental health conditions including anxiety disorders, mood disorders, eating disorders, addictive disorders, somatic symptom disorders, and others. However, a number of conceptual and methodological challenges have made it difficult for interoceptive constructs to be broadly applied in mental health research and treatment settings. In November 2016, the Laureate Institute for Brain Research organized the first Interoception Summit, a gathering of interoception experts from around the world, with the goal of accelerating progress in understanding the role of interoception in mental health. The discussions at the meeting were organized around four themes: interoceptive assessment, interoceptive integration, interoceptive psychopathology, and the generation of a roadmap that could serve as a guide for future endeavors. This article presents an overview of the emerging consensus generated by the meeting.

Absence of reliable physiological signature of illusory body ownership revealed by fine-grained autonomic measurement during the rubber hand illusion
Publication year: 2021

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The neural representation of a ‘biological self’ is linked theoretically to the control of bodily physiology. In an influential model, selfhood relates to internal agency and higher-order interoceptive representation, inferred from the predicted impact of efferent autonomic nervous activity on afferent viscerosensory feedback. Here we tested if an altered representation of physical self (illusory embodiment of an artificial hand) is accompanied by sustained shifts in autonomic activity. Participants (N = 37) underwent procedures for induction of the rubber hand illusion (synchronous stroking of own unseen hand and observed stroking of artificial hand) and a control condition (asychronous stroking). We recorded electrocardiography, electrodermal activity, and a non-invasive measure of multiunit skin sympathetic nerve activity (SKNA) from the chest. We compared these autonomic indices between task conditions, and between individuals who did and did not experience the illusion. Bayes factors quantified the strength of evidence for and against null hypotheses. Observed proprioceptive drift and subjective reports confirmed the efficacy of the synchronous (vs asynchronous) condition in inducing illusory hand ownership. Stringent discriminant analysis classified 24/37 individuals as experiencing the rubber hand illusion. Surprisingly, heart rate, heart rate variability, electrodermal activity, and SKNA measures revealed no autonomic differences between synchronous vs asynchronous conditions, nor between individuals who did or did not experience the rubber hand illusion. Bayes factors indicated substantial evidence for no physiological differences. In contrast to earlier reports, our autonomic data show the absence of a reliable change in physiological state during the rubber hand illusion. More encompassing perturbations of self-experience, for example in full body illusions, may nevertheless be coupled to, or facilitated by, changes in efferent autonomic activity and afferent viscerosensory feedback. Our findings suggest that such changes in bodily physiology are not sustained as an obligatory component of the rubber hand illusion.

Final report - Autonomic nerve recordings applied as a novel psychophysiological tool for Consciousness Science
Publication year: 2021
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
Influential theories in consciousness science propose a basic conscious sense of ‘self’ depends upon the control and representation of the physiological state of the body, through interoceptive predictive coding mechanisms. An ‘active inference’ model suggests that selfhood is coupled to efferent autonomic neural activity and its predicted effects on interoceptive feedback from the body. Correspondingly, some studies report that changes in conscious self-perception are accompanied by changes in autonomic response.
AIMS
We tested the hypothesis that fine-grained measures of peripheral autonomic (sympathetic) nerve traffic encode states of consciousness (including illusions of body ownership).
METHOD
Experiments were conducted using multi-axis autonomic recordings, encompassing: 1) Direct sympathetic microneurography recordings (made in 3 healthy participants); 2) A newly-described non-invasive measurement of skin sympathetic nerve traffic (SKNA) (in 37 participants); 3) Conscious perception of body ownership was manipulated using an established Rubber Hand Illusion protocol.
RESULTS
We established the feasibility of combining consciousness science experiments with both microneurography and SKNA. We found evidence (confirmed using Bayes factors) that successful induction of the Rubber Hand Illusion was not associated with reliable tonic differences in peripheral nerve activity, nor heart rate responses.
CONCLUSIONS
Our findings highlight the utility of fine-grained autonomic measurement (notably SKNA) to theories of conscious self-representation. Our observations regarding the Rubber Hand Illusion suggest that autonomic changes are artifactual or transient.
