OBJECTIVE
A previous experiment suggested that consumption of intentionally treated tea influenced subjective mood under double-blind, controlled conditions. To investigate this effect objectively, we studied whether Arabidopsis thaliana seeds hydrated with intentionally treated vs. untreated water would show differences in hypocotyl length, anthocyanin, and chlorophyll.
DESIGN
Three Buddhist monks were asked to focus their intention on commercially bottled water with the goal of improving the growth of seeds; bottled water from the same source served as an untreated control. Seeds with three variations of the flavoprotein cryptochrome (CRY) were used: the wild type Arabidopsis (Columbia-4), a gain-of-function mutation (His-cry2), and a loss-of function mutation (cry1/2), where “gain” and “loss” refer to enhanced and reduced sensitivity to blue light, respectively. The seeds were hydrated with treated or untreated water under blinded conditions, then placed in random positions in an incubator and exposed to either blue light or blue plus far-red light. The germination process was repeated three times in each experiment, each time using new seeds, and then the entire experiment was repeated four times.
RESULTS
Data combined across all four experiments showed a highly significant decrease in hypocotyl length in the His-cry2 seedlings (treated mean 1.31 ± 0.01 mm, untreated mean 1.43 ± 0.01 mm, p < 10-13), a significant increase in anthocyanin with all three forms of cry, particularly His-cry2 (treated mean 17.0 ± 0.31 mg, untreated mean 14.5 ± 0.31 mg, p < 10-4), and a modest increase in chlorophyll in His-cry2 (treated mean 247.6 ± 5.63 mg, untreated mean 230.6 ± 5.63 mg, p = 0.05). These outcomes were in alignment with the monks’ intentions because a decrease in hypocotyl and increase in anthocyanin and chlorophyll are associated with enhanced photomorphogenic growth. These experiments suggest that the His-cry2 mutation of Arabidopsis may be an especially robust “detector” of intention.

Arabidopsis is a small flowering plant in the mustard family. Its genome has been fully mapped and as such it has become a model system for plant genetics and molecular biology. Arabidopsis contains a flavoprotein called cryptochrome, a blue light receptor found in all plants and animals (including humans). There is evidence that cryptochrome also has quantum biological properties, used for example in avian magnetonavigation. As such, cryptochrome may be a candidate biological receptor for quantum phenomena such as entanglement and observational effects.
To explore possible quantum-mind-mediated effects of cryptochrome, under double-blind conditions we studied whether Arabidopsis seeds would show differences in the length of the stem of a germinating seedling (called the hypocotyl, short for hypocotyledonous stem) when watered with intentionally “treated” vs. identical but untreated water.
A single source of water was divided into two parts; one half was “imprinted” with intention for improved growth by three experienced senior Buddhist monks, and the other half was used as untreated control water. Arabidopsis seeds with three types of cryptochrome mutations were used: normal, gain-of-function and loss-of-function. Gain and lossof-function mutations refer to reduced or enhanced functioning of cryptochrome. The normal seed is known as Columbia (abbreviated Col-4), the loss-of-function seed contains a mutated gene called cry1/2, and the gain-of-function seed contains a mutated gene called His-CRY2. Seeds were placed in dishes inside a temperature-controlled incubator, the seeds were germinated under conditions of blue or blue and red light, and then the hypocotyl length was measured (blind to the treated vs. untreated condition). Three replications of the germination process were conducted in each of three experiments, each replication using new seeds.
When comparing treated vs. untreated water conditions, the gain-of-function His-CRY2 seeds in both the blue and blue and red light conditions resulted in a highly significant decrease in hypocotyl length, which is associated with enhanced growth in the treated water (p < 0.0001, two-tailed). The same statistically significant outcome was observed in three repeated experiments.
Results strongly support the hypothesis that intentionally imprinted water enhanced growth in an Arabidopsis mutation containing the cryptochrome gene His-CRY2. This suggests that cryptochrome may be a component of living systems that is particularly sensitive to intentional influence; it also provides a clue about potential links between qualia (subjective intention) and quanta (behavior of the elementary physical world).

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Effects of intentionally treated water and seeds on the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana

OBJECTIVE
A previously reported experiment indicated that Arabidopsis thaliana seeds with cryptochrome mutation His-CRY2 showed more robust photomorphogenic growth when hydrated with intentionally treated water as compared to untreated water. The present study attempted to replicate that outcome, adding a condition where the seeds were also intentionally treated. Arabidopsis seeds were used because they contain a photosensitive flavoprotein called cryptochrome (CRY). CRY has been proposed as a possible “transducer” of intention in living systems because it is thought to have quantum biological properties, and as such, it might potentially be sensitive to quantum observer effects.
DESIGN
Three Buddhist monks directed their attention toward commercially bottled water and Arabidopsis seeds while holding the intention to improve the growth of the plant. As a control condition, no attention was directed at water or seeds from the same sources. Under double-blinded conditions, treated and untreated seeds were placed in an incubator, hydrated with treated or untreated water, and exposed to either continuous blue light or blue plus far-red light. The seed germination process was repeated three times, each time using new seeds. A 2 × 2 × 2 ANOVA, with water, seeds, and light as factors, was used to analyze the results.
RESULTS
Treated water was associated with enhanced photomorphogenic growth, as reflected by a shorter hypocotyl length (p = 0.04) and greater amounts of chlorophyll (p = 0.0005) and anthocyanin (p = 2 × 10-6). Treated seeds resulted in greater amounts of chlorophyll (p = 0.04), but also a longer hypocotyl (p = 0.0004) and less anthocyanin (p = 0.01). Plants exposed to blue plus far-red light were constantly more robust than plants grown under blue light, regardless of the type of water or seed (p < 10-10).
CONCLUSION
Intentionally treated water improved the growth of the His-CRY2 variant of Arabidopsis, confirming results of an earlier experiment. Enhanced growth associated with exposure to blue plus far-red light also confirmed to known effects. A more complex relationship was observed with treated seeds. Further research is required to understand the latter outcome, as it may provide clues about the underlying mechanisms of intentional influences.
