Meditation-induced changes in subjective time are mediated by heart-rate variability and breathing rate

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
to conceptualizations of a relationship between meditation, subjective time, and psychophysiology, we conducted a study probing for changes in temporal integration after meditation. We employed three psychophysical tasks related to perception of sequence in the milliseconds range, the integration of metronome beats, and the perception of alternations in the ambiguous Necker cube. The tasks were administered before and after the intervention. The 91 participants were experienced mindfulness meditators who in three separate 10 minute sessions either meditated by following a meditation session (n=44) or listened to an audio play (n=47), the three counterbalanced sessions conducted on three separate days. During the intervention heart-rate and breathing rate was recorded and compared to a resting-state condition. Applying path analyses, we found several mediating and moderating effects. Regarding subjective scales, those meditators who were less aware of the passage of time felt less emotional arousal. Regarding psychophysiology and switching of the Necker cube, breathing rate significantly mediated the effect of meditation across all participants, that is, the slower breathing during meditation the slower the switching of the two aspects in the Necker cube. Additionally, a moderator effect showed that trait-mindfulness leads to slower switching times in meditators. Regarding the metronome task, and over all frequencies meditation in more experienced meditators (n > 100 hours) lead to a decrease of integration intervals. However, for the fastest (ISI = 0.3 s) and slowest (ISI = 3 s) metronome frequencies an opposite effect occurred: the larger RMSSD during meditation the larger the integration interval. Overall, these findings add evidence to meditation-induced changes in subjective time and the general notion of embodiment of mental functioning. Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
One of the biggest challenges for researchers investigating altered states of consciousness (ASCs) has been the need for a
systematic framework to accurately describe the phenomenological characteristics of ASCs, as well as placing them in relation to regular states of consciousness. Here, we target these two challenges by employing a new and systematic model of consciousness, the consciousness state space (CSS), and presenting a typology of ASCs within the CSS model. Specifically, the CSS model describes two different levels of self, narrative and minimal, as concentric spheres along three dimensions - subjective time, awareness, and emotion - and creates a phenomenological state-space encompassing all possible states, with its proposed neural space. We describe several ASCs focusing on dreaming, hallucinogenic effects of drugs, and meditation, in order to demonstrate and draw several conclusions. Here we focus on two related alterations during ASCs pertaining to perception of time and the bodily self: (i) ASCs share a common ‘collapse’ of the time dimension towards a transitory state of ‘timelessness’; (ii) during extreme ASCs, body sensations are ‘cut-off’ or at least distorted.

Enhanced relaxation in students after combined Depth Relaxation Music Therapy and silence in a natural setting
Publication year: 2019

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT
This study includes a design that combines Depth Relaxation Music Therapy (DRMT)/Hypnomusictherapy (HMT), silence, and nature. Participants (n?=?84) were divided into seven groups and first received 16?min of DRMT/HMT followed by 6:30?min of silence or a 16-min seminar focusing on silence in therapy and counselling succeeded by 6:30?min of silence. In the seminar, the subjects were invited to participate in a moderated group discussion and to communicate their experiences and ideas concerning silence in health-related settings. Each group then experienced the other condition (within-subject design) with one week in between. The overall process was conducted in the natural setting of a city garden. The aim of the study was to compare the effects of a 6:30-min silence following either a group discussion on silence (university seminar) or a session of DRMT in a natural setting. Participants in the DRMT/HMT condition relatively overestimated the duration of silence and felt that time had passed more slowly as compared to silence following the seminar. Relaxation was significantly increased both after silence following DRMT/HMT and silence following the seminar, a probable effect of exposure to nature. Within the DRMT/HMT-study arm, participants who were more relaxed also felt themselves more intensely, experienced space to a lesser extent, and felt that time had passed more quickly. In conclusion, both silent conditions in nature fostered relaxation. These study conditions combining silence, nature, and DRMT/HMT proved to be effective as a group music therapy method and should be further explored.

Meditation experience and mindfulness are associated with reduced self-reported mind-wandering in meditators — A German version of the daydreaming frequency scale

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT
Mind-wandering or daydreaming can be described as spontaneous thoughts that are independent of the task at hand and the current sensory information. Mindfulness, defined as the ability to focus on the present moment with an accepting attitude towards the present experience, is considered to be the opposite of mind-wandering. We aimed at assessing how long-term meditation practice influences mind-wandering in everyday life and to which extent mind-wandering and self-reported aspects of mindfulness are conceptually linked. We first investigated the factorial structure of a German version of the Daydreaming Frequency Scale (DDFS) in a student population. Then we applied this version in meditators to a) investigate the relationship between meditation experience and reported levels of mind-wandering in daily life and b) explore how different facets of mindfulness, assessed with the Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory (FMI), relate to mind-wandering. Using a correlational design, we show that, among meditators, more meditation practice in years accounts for less self-reported mind-wandering in daily life. There was a negative association between mindfulness (FMI) and mind-wandering (DDFS). Our results provide evidence for clarifying the relationship between, meditation experience, mindfulness and mind-wandering and further validate the use of the FMI as a sensitive tool for assessing a two-factor structure of mindfulness.

Final report - Changes in subjective time as indication of increased mindfulness after meditation

Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
The study was based on conceptualizations pertaining to the relationship between meditation, the subjective present, and psychophysiology. We aimed to assess whether physiological changes of heart rate and breathing rate during meditation would influence the timing of perceived events. We employed three psychophysical tasks related to perception of sequence, the integration of metronome beats, and the perception of the Necker cube. The tasks were administered before and after the intervention. Participants were experienced mindfulness meditators who in three separate 10-minute sessions, conducted on three separate days, either meditated by following a meditation session (n=44) or listened to an audio play (n=47). During the intervention heart-rate and breathing rate were recorded and compared to a resting-state condition. Regarding the switching of the Necker cube, breathing rate significantly mediated the effect of meditation across all participants: the slower the breathing during meditation, the slower the switches of the two aspects of the Necker cube. Regarding the metronome task, and over all frequencies, meditation in more experienced meditators (n > 100 hours) lead to a decrease of the duration of integration intervals. For the fastest (ISI = 0.3 s) and slowest (ISI = 3 s) metronome frequencies, an indirect effect occurred: the larger heart rate variability, the larger the integration interval. These findings add evidence to meditation-induced changes in subjective time and the embodiment of mental functioning. The direct effect of smaller integration intervals in the metronome task is indicative of a more pronounced present-moment focus characteristic of deep meditative states.

Increased relaxation and present orientation after a period of silence in a natural surrounding

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Introduction: Nature and silence and their interrelationship have been rarely-discussed topics in music therapy research. We therefore compared the experience of silence in an indoor setting (university lecture room) with silence in a natural outdoor setting (city garden). Methods: Following a non-randomized repeated-measure design, we conducted two sessions of experiencing silence (indoors and outdoors) lasting 6:30 minutes and guided by a qualified music therapist. Participants were students (n = 46) who experienced the two conditions in two different groups in reverse order with one week in between each session. After each session, participants filled out questionnaires pertaining to their senses of self, space and time during the period of silence, as well as their states of relaxation and boredom. Results: Silence both indoors and outdoors is effective in significantly fostering relaxation. The outdoor condition led to a stronger present orientation (experiencing the moment) and a reduced past orientation (referring to memories) accompanied by more relaxation and less boredom. Discussion: Silence in a natural setting has the potential to alter states of consciousness in a qualitative way that is comparable to meditation. Silence in nature could prove effective as part of guided music therapy sessions.

Meditation-induced states, vagal tone, and breathing activity are related to changes in auditory temporal integration
Publication year: 2019

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This study is based on the relationship between meditation, the present moment, and psychophysiology. We employed the metronome task to operationalize the extension of the present moment. A pre-post longitudinal study was conducted. The performance in the metronome task was compared before and after the interventions (meditation, story). The aim was to assess whether physiological changes (heart, breathing) during meditation influence the temporal-integration (TI) of metronome beats. Mindfulness meditators either meditated (n = 41) or listened to a story (n = 43). The heart and breathing activity were recorded during the intervention and compared to a resting-state condition. By applying path analyses we found that meditation led to an increase of the duration of integration intervals at the slowest metronome frequency (inter-stimulus interval, ISI = 3 s). After meditation, the higher the heart-rate variability (i.e., the root mean square of successive differences, RMSSD), the longer the duration of integration intervals at the fastest frequency (ISI = 0.33 s). Moreover, the higher the breathing rate during meditation, the greater the integration of intervals at ISI = 1 s. These findings add evidence to meditation-induced changes on the TI of metronome beats and the concept of the embodiment of mental functioning.

Waiting, thinking, and feeling: Variations in the perception of time during silence
Publication year: 2020

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7142212/
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Research on the perception of silence has led to insights regarding its positive effects on individuals. We conducted a series of studies during which individuals were exposed to several minutes of silence in different contexts. Participants were introduced to different social and environmental settings, either in a seminar room at a university or in a city garden, alone or in a group. Instructions across studies varied, as participants were exposed to real waiting situations, were asked to just think and to explicitly experience the time interval without further instructions or following a session of Depth Relaxation Music Therapy (DRMT)/Hypnomusictherapy (HMT). Silence was judged to significantly increase relaxation, improve mood states, and alter the perception of time and the orientation toward the present moment. We controlled for influences of trait variables, such as impulsivity, mindfulness, daydreaming, and time perspective. Findings empirically demonstrate that exposure to silence can be effective in therapeutic and educational contexts to promote relaxation and well-being.
