Alpha and alpha-beta phase synchronization mediate the recruitment of the visuospatial attention network through the Superior Longitudinal Fasciculus

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT
It is well known that attentional selection of relevant information relies on local synchronization of alpha band neuronal oscillations in visual cortices for inhibition of distracting inputs. Additionally, evidence for long-range coupling of neuronal oscillations between visual cortices and regions engaged in the anticipation of upcoming stimuli has been more recently provided. Nevertheless, on the one hand the relation between long-range functional coupling and anatomical connections is still to be assessed, and, on the other hand, the specific role of the alpha and beta frequency bands in the different processes underlying visuo-spatial attention still needs further clarification. We address these questions using measures of linear (frequency-specific) and nonlinear (cross-frequency) phase-synchronization in a cohort of 28 healthy subjects using magnetoencephalography. We show that alpha band phase-synchronization is modulated by the orienting of attention according to a parieto-occipital top-down mechanism reflecting behavior, and its hemispheric asymmetry is predicted by volume's asymmetry of specific tracts of the Superior-Longitudinal-Fasciculus. We also show that a network comprising parietal regions and the right putative Frontal-Eye-Field, but not the left, is recruited in the deployment of spatial attention through an alpha-beta cross-frequency coupling. Overall, we demonstrate that the visuospatial attention network features subsystems indexed by characteristic spectral fingerprints, playing different functional roles in the anticipation of upcoming stimuli and with diverse relation to fiber tracts.

Toward a brain theory of meditation

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The rapidly progressing science of meditation has led to insights about the neural correlates of focused attention meditation (FAM), open monitoring meditation (OMM), compassion meditation (CM) and loving kindness meditation (LKM), in terms of states and traits. However, a unified theoretical understanding of the brain mechanisms involved in meditation-related functions, including mindfulness, is lacking. After reviewing the main forms of meditation and their relationships, the major brain networks and brain states, as well as influential theoretical views of consciousness, we outline a Brain Theory of Meditation (BTM). BTM takes the lead from considerations about the roles of the major brain networks, i.e., the central executive, salience and default mode networks, and their interplay, in meditation, and from an essential energetic limitation of the human brain, such that only up to 1% of the neurons in the cortex can be concurrently activated. The development of the theory is also guided by our neuroscientific studies with the outstanding participation of Theravada Buddhist monks, with other relevant findings in literature. BTM suggests mechanisms for the different forms of meditation, with the down-regulation of brain network activities in FAM, the gating and tuning of network coupling in OMM, and state-related up-regulation effects in CM and LKM. The theory also advances a leftward asymmetry in top-down regulation, and an enhanced inter-hemispheric integration, in meditation states and traits, also with implications for a theoretical understanding of conscious access. Meditation thus provides a meta-function for an efficient brain/mind regulation, and a flexible allocation of highly limited and often constrained (e.g., by negative emotion and mind wandering) brain activity resources, which can be related to mindfulness. Finally, a series of experimental predictions is derived from the theory.

Final report - Mindfulness meditation shapes synchronization of brain networks for effective perceptual decision making
Publication year: 2019
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
Meditation is as an awareness training resulting in alterations in attention, perception and cognition. Theoretical and empirical papers show effects of meditation on focused and sustained attention. Conceivably, improved attention skills also impact on perceptual sensitivity and decision making performance although scarce evidence exists.
AIMS
We aim at understanding whether and how mindfulness meditation training affects attention, perception and decision making and the rhythmic interplay between brain networks involved in these processes.
METHOD
We designed a visual perceptual decision-making task (study1- S1) in meditators and non meditators. Subjects monitor incoherently moving dots for periods of coherent motion. Additionally, we used in-house multivariate connectivity to detect behaviorally relevant long-range synchronization in a cued visual attention paradigm [1] in non meditators (study2- S2). MEG data were acquired in both studies. In S1, modulations of power were analyzed in response to coherent motion. In S2, modulations of connectivity were analyzed in response to cue presentation.
RESULTS
In S1, in non meditators a sustained decrease of alpha power is observed in occipital and parietal areas after coherent motion, the strength of which varies with the task difficulty. Such a decrease is not observed in meditators. In S2, an increase in alpha connectivity between occipital and parietal areas in response to the cue presentation is found.
CONCLUSIONS
In both studies a role for alpha in enhancing or reducing inhibition of parietal and occipital regions is observed. A Brain Theory of Meditation [2] has also been put forward providing theoretical support for the role of power and connectivity modulations.

Title:
Deep convolutional neural networks for feature-less automatic classification of independent components in multi-channel electrophysiological brain recordings
Publication year: 2019
URL:
https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/8587223
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Objective: Interpretation of the electroencephalographic ( EEG) and magnetoencephalographic ( MEG) signals requires off-line artifacts removal. Since artifacts share frequencies with brain activity, filtering is insufficient. Blind source separation, mainly through independent component analysis ( ICA), is the gold-standard procedure for the identification of artifacts in multi-dimensional recordings. However, a classification of brain and artifactual independent components ( ICs) is still required. Since ICs exhibit recognizable patterns, classification is usually performed by experts' visual inspection. This procedure is time consuming and prone to errors. Automatic ICs classification has been explored, often through complex ICs features extraction prior to classification. Relying on deep-learning ability of self-extracting the features of interest, we investigated the capabilities of convolutional neural networks ( CNNs) for off-line, automatic artifact identification through ICs without feature selection. Methods: A CNN was applied to spectrum and topography of a large dataset of few thousand samples of ICs obtained from multi-channel EEG and MEG recordings acquired during heterogeneous experimental settings and on different subjects. CNN performances, when applied to EEG, MEG, and combined EEG and MEG ICs, were explored and compared with state-of-the-art feature-based automatic classification. Results: Beyond state-of-the-art automatic classification accuracies were demonstrated through cross validation ( 92.4% EEG, 95.4% MEG, 95.6% EEG+ MEG). Conclusion: High CNN classification performances were achieved through heuristical selection of machinery hyperparameters and through the CNN self-selection of the features of interest. Significance: Considering the large data availability of multi-channel EEG and MEG recordings, CNNs may be suited for classification of ICs of multi-channel brain electrophysiological recordings.

Spatiotemporal structures of time lags in the brain as revealed by magnetoencephalography

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies in humans have recently provided evidence of intrinsic activity that propagates throughout the brain with non-zero time lags. Nevertheless, the limited temporal resolution of fMRI does not allow to characterize this lagged propagation on time scales relevant to behavior, i.e., in the 10-100 millisecond range. Thus, a millisecond resolution technique such as magnetoencephalography (MEG) is needed. Here we aim at investigating the spatiotemporal structure of intrinsic propagated activity on 61 resting state MEG subjects taken from the Human Connectome Project (HCP) database. For this purpose, we relied on a multivariate connectivity approach based on the cross-correlation between the amplitude envelopes of the alpha frequency band signals associated with cortical areas. Our findings clearly revealed that patterns of time lags between regions exist on temporal scales of tens of milliseconds, thus supporting the notion that communication by relaying signals is a central mechanism implemented by the brain. Finally, we discriminated between cortical regions that initiate the intrinsic activity propagation (sources) and cortical regions that act as destinations of the activity propagation (sinks). We found significant sources in the bilateral parietal areas and in the precuneus, and significant sinks in the left inferior temporal cortex.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The understanding of the neurobiological basis of perceptual decision-making has been profoundly shaped by studies in the monkey brain in tandem with mathematical models, providing the basis for the formulation of an intentional account of decision-making. Although much progress has been made in human studies, a characterization of the neural underpinnings of an integrative mechanism, where evidence accumulation and the selection and execution of responses are carried out by the same system, remains challenging. Here, by employing magnetoencephalographic recording in combination with an experimental protocol that measures saccadic response and leverages a systematic modulation of evidence levels, we obtained a spectral dissociation between evidence accumulation mechanisms and motor preparation within the same brain region. Specifically, we show that within the dorsomedial parietal cortex alpha power modulation reflects the amount of sensory evidence available while beta power modulations reflect motor preparation, putatively representing the human homolog of the saccadic-related LIP region.
