Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The neural basis of dilemmas involving decisions with profound affective impact, such as in romantic life, remains to be understood. The “Battle of the Sexes” is a paradigm from Game Theory that can be used to experimentally address such dilemmas. A form of in-group love, tribal love in football fans, provides the opportunity to study strong affective dilemmas when tribal and romantic love compete for hedonic decision-making. Here, we used for the first time a “Battle of the Sexes” dilemma using fMRI. We investigated, in 44 male football fans, the neural correlates of cooperative behaviour under conflicting choices in the context of romantic versus tribal love. We identified a critical functional segregation of prefrontal regions in affective decision-making. The orbitofrontal cortex signalled emotional appraisal of the dilemma. The medial anterolateral and the ventromedial prefrontal cortices reflected reciprocal cooperation instead of selfish engagement in football-related activities. The lateral portion of anterolateral prefrontal cortex was recruited during ultimate deliberation. In sum, emotional appraisal and rational choice reflected a contiguous functional parcellation in anterolateral prefrontal cortex: appraisal (medial) vs. choice (lateral region).

Visual adaptation describes the processes by which the visual system alters its operating properties in response to changes in the environment. It is one of the mechanisms controlling visual perceptual bistability – when two perceptual solutions are available – by controlling the duration of each percept. Moving plaids are an example of such ambiguity. They can be perceived as two surfaces sliding incoherently over each other or as a single coherent surface.
Here, we investigated, using fMRI, whether activity in the human motion complex (hMT+), a region tightly related to the perceptual integration of visual motion, is modulated by distinct forms of visual adaptation to coherent or incoherent perception of moving plaids. Our hypothesis is that exposure to global coherent or incoherent moving stimuli leads to different levels of measurable adaptation, reflected in hMT+ activity. We found that the strength of the measured visual adaptation effect depended on whether subjects integrated (coherent percept) or segregated (incoherent percept) surface motion signals.
Visual motion adaptation was significant both for coherent motion and globally incoherent surface motion. Although not as strong as to the coherent percept, visual adaptation due to the incoherent percept also affects hMT+. This shows that adaptation can contribute to regulate percept duration during visual bistability, with distinct weights, depending on the type of percept. Our findings suggest a link between bistability and adaptation mechanisms, both due to coherent and incoherent motion percepts, but in an asymmetric manner. These asymmetric adaptation weights have strong implications in models of perceptual decision and may explain asymmetry of perceptual interpretation periods.

The role of long-range integration mechanisms underlying visual perceptual binding and their link to interhemispheric functional connectivity, as measured by fMRI, remains elusive. Only inferences on anatomical organization from resting state data paradigms not requiring coherent binding have been achieved. Here, we used a paradigm that allowed us to study such relation between perceptual interpretation and functional connectivity under bistable interhemispheric binding vs. non-binding of visual surfaces. Binding occurs by long-range perceptual integration of motion into a single object across hemifields and non-binding reflects opponent segregation of distinct moving surfaces into each hemifield. We hypothesized that perceptual integration vs. segregation of surface motion, which is achieved in visual area hMT+, is modulated by changes in interhemispheric connectivity in this region. Using 7T fMRI, we found that perceptual long-range integration of bistable motion can be tracked by changes in interhemispheric functional connectivity between left/right hMT+. Increased connectivity was tightly related with long-range perceptual integration. Our results indicate that hMT+ interhemispheric functional connectivity reflects perceptual decision, suggesting its pivotal role on long-range disambiguation of bistable physically constant surface motion. We reveal for the first time, at the scale of fMRI, a relation between interhemispheric functional connectivity and decision based perceptual binding.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS
Studying the human brain response to shifts in perception provides an insight on the neuronal processes which underlie perceptual decision. Visual ambiguous stimuli are a powerful tool to investigate such processes, since perception varies over time despite the physically unchanging properties of stimuli.
A classic example of an ambiguous visual stimulus is when two moving gratings are superimposed to form a plaid. The perception of a moving plaid switches back and forth between two interpretations: it can be perceived as a single surface with coherent motion or as two surfaces sliding one over the other (incoherent motion). It has been suggested that this phenomenon arises from competition between opposing percepts, which might be influenced by mechanisms such as neuronal adaptation, inhibition, and memory. Current perceptual stability models consider bistable perception as a result of the interaction between these mechanisms, but the relative contribution of each one is still under debate.
METHODS
Here, using fMRI, EEG and behavioral approaches, we explore how each of these contributes to perceptual decision during bistable visual perception of moving plaids, taking into account the possible interaction between them. We hypothesized that the crucial role of adaptation in perceptual bistability arises from its influence on other mechanisms, such as perceptual persistence (a special form of short term visual memory) and inhibition.
Based on a set of three experiments, we first tested for distinct levels of adaptation during visual motion perceptual bistability. Then, we investigated how such adaptation competes with persistence to influence perceptual experience. Finally, we tested whether cross-inhibitory effects occur between bistable percepts of a moving plaid, elicited by adaptation.
RESULTS
We found that adaptation can contribute to regulating percept duration during visual bistability, with distinct weights, depending on the type of percept. Our results provide further evidence for continuous competition between adaptation and persistence, the first leading to negative and the second to positive hysteresis, with a relevant role for perceptual experience. Finally, we demonstrated, both at the behavioral and neuronal level, that inhibition across neural populations plays a key role in the disambiguation of moving plaids.
CONCLUSION
Taken together, our findings add to the understanding of how the visual system achieves perceptual decisions based on interactions between low and high-level neuronal mechanisms, one based on adaptation and the second on short-term visual memory (persistence).

Software programming is a complex and relatively recent human activity, involving the integration of mathematical, recursive thinking and language processing. The neural correlates of this recent human activity are still poorly understood. Error monitoring during this type of task, requiring the integration of language, logical symbol manipulation and other mathematical skills, is particularly challenging. We therefore aimed to investigate the neural correlates of decision-making during source code understanding and mental manipulation in professional participants with high expertise. The present fMRI study directly addressed error monitoring during source code comprehension, expert bug detection and decision-making. We used C code, which triggers the same sort of processing irrespective of the native language of the programmer. We discovered a distinct role for the insula in bug monitoring and detection and a novel connectivity pattern that goes beyond the expected activation pattern evoked by source code understanding in semantic language and mathematical processing regions. Importantly, insula activity levels were critically related to the quality of error detection, involving intuition, as signalled by reported initial bug suspicion, prior to final decision and bug detection. Activity in this salience network (SN) region evoked by bug suspicion was predictive of bug detection precision, suggesting that it encodes the quality of the behavioral evidence. Connectivity analysis provided evidence for top-down circuit “reutilization” stemming from anterior cingulate cortex (BA32), a core region in the SN that evolved for complex error monitoring such as required for this type of recent human activity. Cingulate (BA32) and anterolateral (BA10) frontal regions causally modulated decision processes in the insula, which in turn was related to activity of math processing regions in early parietal cortex. In other words, earlier brain regions used during evolution for other functions seem to be reutilized in a top-down manner for a new complex function, in an analogous manner as described for other cultural creations such as reading and literacy.

Perception of biological motion is important for daily life activities, such as non-verbal communication. Understanding how the visual system perceives biological motion, even from point-light displays depicting human activity, remains a neuroscientific challenge. The mechanisms that allow us to interpret biological motion from the local motion of individual dots, which is characteristic for the local motion of parts of living beings and can be defined as life motion, are largely unknown. The functional separation into distinct neural stages of the correlates of the perception of life motion from perception of global motion of a coherent body bearing multiple articulated joints remains to be achieved. We hypothesized that life motion processing can be separated, by using a single dot motion paradigm featuring the biomechanical details of local realistic motion of a single joint. Equipped with such a paradigm, we studied the neural correlates of life motion perception. Low level visual areas, such as the human hMT+ complex, are known to respond to simple and variable motion patterns. To investigate if this region also responds to biological motion paths that a given center of gravity undergoes through space, we manipulated the constraints imposed by gravity and inertial forces on acceleration/deceleration patterns of foot motion, by mapping realistic foot movement on a single dot motion stimulus. We therefore developed an event-related fMRI experiment to study the neural basis of life motion perception from a single moving dot embedding the kinematic properties of local feet motion that only contained local properties. We could isolate more low-level (life motion) aspects of biological motion processing from aspects related to social perception of animated shapes. We hypothesized that such local biological motion computation is achieved in hMT+ by assessing, using BOLD fMRI, the neural correlates underlying the decision the decision whether local instantaneous acceleration patterns were truly biological or not. We found that hMT+ is sensitive to signals that encode life motion (local biological motion), which places this region in the initial biological motion processing network.

The recognition of facial expressions in real-time contexts is inherently dynamic. Due to its nonlinear nature, the perception of emotions might lead to different perceptual interpretations of the same facial expression depending on the previous experience. We hypothesize that this timebased dependence of the emotion recognition system results from perceptual hysteresis. This theoretical account might provide an estimation of the contribution of memory mechanisms to the current percept at different time-scales. Here, we aimed to explore temporal context-related mechanisms underlying perceptual hysteresis on the recognition of dynamic emotional facial expressions. We used realistic expression transitions from a source to a target emotion with different valences, always passing through a neutral expression. Three pairs of emotions were used to design the dynamic transitions: anger-happiness, sadness-anger, and sadness-happiness. Psychophysical data were acquired from 20 participants, who were asked to identify the onset and offset of what they perceived as a neutral expression interval. Our results revealed the existence of temporal context effects on the recognition of dynamic emotions, thus revealing perceptual hysteresis. Importantly, we also found a relation between stimulus emotional content and perceptual history effects: negative valence stimulus content appeared to overrule recent perceptual experience effects, stored in short-term memory. As such, we suggest that recent perceptual experience affects the recognition of facial expressions by modulating short-term visual memory contributions to perceptual interpretation of emotional stimuli.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

We visually experience the world as stable and mostly unambiguous. However, afferent sensory information is often ambiguous, requiring perceptual interpretation to disambiguate the visual cues and construct relatively stable percepts. A moving plaid is an example of such ambiguity: the perceptual system spontaneously alternates between two interpretations while the stimulus remains unchanged. Reciprocal inhibition among visual cortex neurons has been postulated as one of the mechanisms accounting for perceptual bistability. The dominance of one percept over the competing one derives from the activation of a subset of neurons encoding that perceptual interpretation and the simultaneous suppression of those related to the opposing representations. Here, we aimed to test how these mechanisms work over time and whether the brain responses to one percept vary depending on adaptation to the previous one. We hypothesize an interaction between the neural populations responding to opposing percepts. We acquired fMRI data from 20 participants. Initially, one of three moving plaid configurations was presented: constantly coherent or incoherent, leading to adaptation; and non-adapting. Then, either coherent or incoherent motion was shown. hMT+ responded differently for the three motion patterns. Initially, we observed the expected adaptation induced difference in activation amplitude. However, contrasting with the response to non-adapting motion, the response to adapting stimuli gradually increased over time, challenging the theoretical expected sustained decrease in activity due to adaptation. Continuous adaptation of the stimulated population and the consequent gradual disinhibition of the adjacent ones might explain this late surprising increase of net activity. hMT+ activity peaked after the transition to the opposing percept, further corroborating a disinhibition effect. Our study reveals a likely inhibition mechanism varying over time as a function of adaptation, which affects neighboring neural populations tuned to distinct global motion representations. It further demonstrates a neural correlate underlying the interaction between competing perceptual states.
