Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The brain can be regarded as an information processing system in which neurons store and propagate information about external stimuli and internal processes. Therefore, estimating interactions between neural activity at the cellular scale has significant implications in understanding how neuronal circuits encode and communicate information across brain areas to generate behavior. While the number of simultaneously recorded neurons is growing exponentially, current methods relying only on pairwise statistical dependencies still suffer from a number of conceptual and technical challenges that preclude experimental breakthroughs describing neural information flows. In this review, we examine the evolution of the field over the years, starting from descriptive statistics to model-based and model-free approaches. Then, we discuss in detail the Granger Causality framework, which includes many popular state-of-the-art methods and we highlight some of its limitations from a conceptual and practical estimation perspective. Finally, we discuss directions for future research, including the development of theoretical information flow models and the use of dimensionality reduction techniques to extract relevant interactions from large-scale recording datasets. Cognitive-relevant information is processed by different brain areas that cooperate to eventually produce a response. The relationship between local activity and global brain states during such processes, however, remains for the most part unexplored. To address this question, we designed a simple face-recognition task performed in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy and monitored with intracranial electroencephalography (EEG). Based on our observations, we developed a novel analytical framework (named "local-global" framework) to statistically correlate the brain activity in every recorded gray-matter region with the widespread connectivity fluctuations as proxy to identify concurrent local activations and global brain phenomena that may plausibly reflect a common functional network during cognition. The application of the local-global framework to the data from three subjects showed that similar connectivity fluctuations found across patients were mainly coupled to the local activity of brain areas involved in face information processing. In particular, our findings provide preliminary evidence that the reported global measures might be a novel signature of functional brain activity reorganization when a stimulus is processed in a task context regardless of the specific recorded areas.

ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
It takes a fraction of a second to recognize a person or an object even when seen under strikingly different conditions. However, how such a robust, high-level representation is achieved by neurons in the human brain is still unclear. In particular, the way that neurons encode different percepts is one of the most intriguing questions in neuroscience.
AIMS
In this project, we aim to investigate the activity of neural populations in humans during conscious perception tasks involving realistic stimuli. More specifically, we aim to characterize the differences between the brain responses to static and time-varying (and thus more realistic) visual representations of consciously perceived concepts.
METHOD
We designed task paradigms and developed a methodological pipeline based on human intracranial recordings to localize and quantify brain time course responses to consciously perceived stimuli (human faces) of static and dynamic modality.
RESULTS
We found significant brain responses in regions from occipital, temporo-parietal and frontal lobe in 3 subjects, which characterized the visual processing pathway as a function of time during static face recognition. Moreover, we identified a depression of the neural population activity (mostly correlated with high-frequency broadband responses) in regions of the medial temporal lobe when faces were viewed within a dynamic context.
CONCLUSIONS
This work systematizes existing methodology to localize neural population activity measured with intracranial EEG during cognitive tasks and explores the specificities of these neural activations when conscious recognition takes place under a more realistic setting than static object viewing.

Mapping epileptic networks with scalp and invasive EEG: applications to epileptogenic zone localization and seizure prediction

ABSTRACT:
This chapter offers an overview of core topics in epilepsy research from a complex systems perspective, starting from single-node studies up to network theory analysis. In its first part, the chapter reviews the advances in EEG biomarkers for epileptic network mapping in both invasive and scalp EEG, including univariate epileptogenic indexes linear connectivity measures within the multivariate autoregressive model, non-linear correlation measures and graph-theoretical properties. In the second part, the chapter covers some of the initial contributions to characterize network dynamics in epilepsy. Particular attention is paid at the seizure prediction problem, using classic dynamical systems approaches as well as the most recent machine-learning prediction algorithms and network-science studies unraveling signatures of the transition from interictal to ictal activity.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

The brain is organized hierarchically to process sensory signals. But, how do functional connections within and across areas contribute to this hierarchical order? We addressed this problem in the thalamocortical network, while monkeys detected vibrotactile stimulus. During this task, we quantified neural variability and directed functional connectivity in simultaneously recorded neurons sharing the cutaneous receptive field within and across VPL and areas 3b and 1. Before stimulus onset, VPL and area 3b exhibited similar fast dynamics while area 1 showed slower timescales. During the stimulus presence, inter-trial neural variability increased along the network VPL-3b-1 while VPL established two main feedforward pathways with areas 3b and 1 to process the stimulus. This lower variability of VPL and area 3b was found to regulate feedforward thalamocortical pathways. Instead, intra-cortical interactions were only anticipated by higher intrinsic timescales in area 1. Overall, our results provide evidence of hierarchical functional roles along the thalamocortical network.
