Deathbed phenomena, other end-of-life experiences and their effects in palliative care teams: A systematic review
Publication year: 2025

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The dying process includes many subjective experiences called end-of-life experiences. The author conducted a systematic review following PRISMA guidelines to characterize end-of-life experiences and their effects on patients, families, healthcare professionals, and volunteers in palliative care settings. The databases used were PubMed, PsycInfo, and Web of Science. Of 7095 articles found, 12 met the eligibility criteria. The prevalence of end-of-life experiences ranged from 28 to 87% and dreams and visions were the most reported. Eight common themes were found: end-of-life experiences are not uncommon (100%); end-of-life experiences can be comforting or not (83.3%); spiritual transformation of end-of-life experiences (58.3%); hallucinations and end-of-life experiences (50%); normalization of end-of-life experiences (50%); training of health professionals (41.6%); end-of-life experiences as prognostic indicators (33.3%); contribution of end-of-life experiences in grief (25%). These experiences, whether comforting or distressing, play a therapeutic role in facilitating a peaceful death and aiding the grieving process.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This study assesses the frequency of reported paranormal phenomena by palliative care professionals in Portugal and their impact on spirituality, clinical practice, and training. A retrospective study in adult palliative care settings was conducted using the ParaPall survey, created by the authors, between October 2022 and January 2023. Participants answered a demographic questionnaire, ParaPall survey, PANAS score, and Intrinsic Spirituality Scale. A sample of 137 participants was obtained, with 89.4% reporting at least one phenomenon. Terminal lucidity (84.7%) and patients passing shortly after significant visits were the most reported. Professionals who reported more phenomenon tended to adopt a spiritual interpretation (p < .001) and showed a higher investment in patient care, while nonspiritual interpretations were linked to avoidance behaviors. Paranormal phenomena influence spiritual beliefs and professional well-being. Results emphasize the need for open discussions and training to help professionals navigate these experiences, enhancing patient care and provider well-being.

Final report - Study of end-of-life paranormal phenomena recognized by palliative care health professionals in Portugal
Publication year: 2025
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
Background
Paranormal phenomena at the end of life remain unstudied in Portugal.
Aims
To assess the frequency of reported paranormal phenomena by palliative care professionals in Portugal and their impact on personal beliefs, spirituality, clinical practice, and training.
Method
A retrospective study in adult palliative care settings was conducted using the ParaPall survey between October 2022 and January 2023. A pilot test was held in April 2022. Participants answered a demographic questionnaire, ParaPall survey, PANAS score, and Intrinsic Spirituality Scale.
Results
A sample of 137 participants was obtained, with 89.4% (n=123) reporting at least one paranormal phenomenon. Terminal lucidity and patients passing soon after visits from significant individuals were the most reported (84.7%). Participants who reported more paranormal experiences were significantly more likely to adopt a non-materialist/spiritual interpretation (p<0.001). A positive influence of the paranormal phenomena on spirituality was observed. These experiences were linked to greater clinical engagement with patients and families. Medical doctors reported more stigma when discussing paranormal phenomena within the medical community (p=0.007).
Conclusions
Paranormal phenomena are widely recognized by palliative care professionals, often shaped by intrinsic spirituality. Those with higher spirituality were more likely to interpret them as spiritual events, correlating with positive clinical outcomes, emotional resilience, and a deeper sense of purpose in their roles. This highlights the importance of addressing spirituality in palliative care settings.
