The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Using the methodological paradigm to investigate the presentiment phenomenon and its extension to pre-alerting and guessing tasks, we planned to explore whether participant heart rate signals could be used to predict whether randomly selected future stimuli would be pleasant or unpleasant.
After evidence found in Experiment 1 of different anticipatory signals before the perception of pleasant and unpleasant sounds, we further explored the effect by asking participants to block incoming unpleasant sounds. The prediction was tested in Experiment 2 using an explicit intuitive condition and an implicit condition in which incoming unpleasant sounds were automatically skipped, based on physiological response. Experiment 3 used only the implicit intuitive condition.
When participants were divided into high and low scorers on absorption, high absorbers obtained a statistically significant difference in the means of blocked pleasant and unpleasant sounds (Exp. 2 and Exp. 3), but only in the implicit condition. Overall, these results seem to suggest the possibility of exploiting anticipatory physiological signals to predict future events using implicit intuition.
With a new study, we aimed to replicate and extend the findings obtained by the previous experiments. In this study, two pools of pleasant and alerting sounds were used to test the generality of previous findings. By using fifty participants, it was also possible to study whether gender could be a further moderator of the observed effect.
Results confirm the findings of Tressoldi, et al. (2009), clarifying that the effect was present only in females. Further statistical analysis suggests that absorption acts as an implicit cognitive “filter” only for pleasant sounds.

Using a well-established methodological paradigm to investigate the presentiment phenomenon and its extension to pre-alerting and guessing tasks, we planned to explore in this study whether participant heart rate signals could be used to predict whether randomly selected future stimuli would be pleasant or unpleasant. After evidence was found in Experiment 1 of different anticipatory signals before the perception of pleasant and unpleasant sounds, we further explored the effect by asking participants to block incoming unpleasant sounds. The prediction was tested in Experiment 2 using an explicit intuitive condition in which participants were informed when their physiological response suggested that the next sound would be unpleasant, and they were able to skip it by pressing the computer mouse. We also included an implicit condition in which incoming unpleasant sounds were automatically skipped, based on physiological response. Experiment 3 used only the implicit intuitive condition. In the implicit intuitive condition, we found an r 0.40 (Expt. 2) and an rs = 0.69 (Expt. 3) between the scores on the Tellegen Absorption Scale and the difference between blocked pleasant and unpleasant sounds. The total variance explained by Absorption and a measure of Expected Efficacy was R2corr = 0.105 (Expt.2) and 0.57 (Expt.3). The specific role of absorption in facilitating implicit intuition was confirmed by the low correlation, r = -0.22, with the difference between the blocked pleasant and unpleasant sounds in the explicit condition (Expt. 2). When participants were divided into high and low scorers on absorption, high absorbers obtained a statistically significant difference in the means of blocked pleasant and unpleasant sounds (Expt. 2 and Expt. 3), but only in the implicit condition. Overall, these results seem to suggest the possibility of exploiting anticipatory physiological signals to predict future events using implicit intuition.

OBJECTIVES:
The purpose of the present study is to test whether hallucinatory experiences respond to the dimensionality principle and whether they occur in non-psychotic disorders. Hence, we will try to detect potential differences (if they were so) between a group of “hallucinators” and a group of “non-hallucinators” with regard to personality, parapsychological and psychopathological traits; hallucinating patients will be compared with nonhallucinating people (undergraduate students); and Peruvian undergraduates students will be compared with and Argentine students in order to carry out a transcultural approach.
METHOD:
A total of 648 undergraduate psychology students population included 494 (76%) females and 154 (24%) males, ranging in age from 17 to 57 years (Mean= 25.11; SD=7.23). We will test whether vivid imagery, dissociation, schizotypical personality, neuroticism, introversion–extroversion, fantasy-prone, absorption and paranormal experiences are predisposing factors for hallucinatory experience. The sample completed a number of questionnaires, in order to explore experiences such as ESP dreams, telepathy, perception of lights/energies, ‘out-of-body’ and near death experiences, past lives recall, sense of presence, medium/possession experiences, spontaneous psychokinesis, healing experience, deja-vu, mystical experience, apparitional experience.
PRELIMINARY RESULTS:
The results showed a higher level of cognitive-perceptual, schizotypy, absorption, dissociation, fantasy and hallucination proneness, and visual imagery in OBErs than in non-OBErs and confirm previous studies. The findings suggest that especially cognitive-perceptual aspects of schizotypy, such as disturbances in sense of self, certainly of self, and self-awareness, are essential features of persons who had paranormal experiencers. The results of this study suggest that the dissociational model of the paranormal experiences, which assumed that underlying dissociative proceses such as absorption and fantasy proneness are associated with them.

An out-of-body experience or OBE is one in which the “self” or center of awareness seems to the experient to occupy temporarily a position that is spatially remote from his or her body. The experience seems are very widespread in the general population. Some studies show a close relation between the incidente of OBEs and their psychological correlates, especially personality variables, absorption, and dissociative experiences. Six specific hypotheses are tested: Students who report out-of-body experiences have a higher capacity for (1) absorption, (2) dissociation, (3) fantasy proneness, (3) kinetic and visual imagery, (4) visual and tactile hallucination, and (5) cognitive-perceptual, disorganized and interpersonal schizotypy than non-experients. A total of 648 undergraduate students population included 76% females and 24% males, who completed a number of scales. Data for experients of OBE were compared with data for those who did not (experients N= 132 vs. non experients N= 516). The results showed a higher level of cognitive-perceptual, schizotypy, absorption, dissociation, fantasy and hallucination proneness, and visual imagery in OBErs than in non-OBErs which confirm previous studies. The statistical test found that the absorption and cognitive-perceptual schizotypy were the best discriminant for visual [F (2/498)= 81.08; p< .001] and tactile hallucination [F (2/498)= 88.44; p< .001], which underlie the differ-entiation of the OBErs and non-OBErs. The term hallucination has pejorative overtones in spite of the widespread occurrence of anomalous perceptual experiences in the normal population. Some subjects report beneficial effects from OBEs in an adaptive way.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Objectives: Conducted with Dr. Carlos S. Alvarado, the research described here was an exploratory
survey of the relationship of Tellegen’s Absorption Scale (TAS) scores, the frequency of absorption
experiences and, adult memories of childhood imaginary companions, and dream-related,
mystical, déjà vu, synesthesia-like and seemingly psychic experiences.
Method: Two surveys were conducted, one a random survey of the population of Richmond,
Virginia (S1) and the other, an English-language web-based volunteer survey (S2).
Results: 263 individuals completed the random survey and 622 the web-based survey. S2
respondents obtained higher TAS scores, and claimed more of all other experiences surveyed. 14%
S1 respondents claimed childhood imaginary companions compared to 26% S2 respondents. For
both groups, TAS scores were significantly higher for those who remembered imaginary
companions (IC-Yes) than for those who did not (IC-No) (Mann-Whitney z scores, S1z = 4.23, S2z =
6.61, p < .0001), as were frequency of absorption experience scores (S1z = 4.03, S2z = 6.96, p <
.0001). IC-Yes and IC-No groups differed significantly in S2 on frequency of dream-related,
seemingly psychic, mystical, déjà vu, and synesthesia-like experiences while in S1, disturbing
dreams, mystical and déjà vu experiences were not significantly different when parsed by ICYes/
IC-No. TAS scores and absorption frequency scores correlated with other experiences in both
surveys, with differing patterns of significance. For example, of the significant outcomes, TAS
scores correlated most highly with the frequency of lucid dreams (rs = .498), claimed apparitional
experiences (rs = .538), mystical experience (rs = .581) and synesthesia-like experiences of color
with music (rs = .614) in S1, but with dream recall frequency (rs = .283), claimed ESP experiences
during dreams (rs = .489), and déjà vu (rs = .524) in S2.
Conclusion/Discussion: This research replicated results of previous studies we have conducted in
that they show a consistent set of relationships between exceptional experiences and with such
psychological states/traits as absorption. Future research that includes measures of psychological
and psychosocial adjustment is warranted.

Three hypotheses are tested. People who has a number of paranormal/anomalous experiences have a higher capacity for dissociation, absorption, and fantasy proneness than non¬-experients. These hypothesis were supported the mean for experients was significantly higher than for non experients. Five hundred sixty undergraduate students, 76% females and 24% males (age range 17-57), completed four scales: the Dissociative Experiences Scale, Tellegen Absorption Scale, Creative Experiences Questionnaire, and Paranormal Experiences Questionnaire. Experients scored higher on dissociation, absorption and fantasy proneness than non experients. Probably the present findings are reasonably representative of people who are not actively interested in paranormal phenomena, but many of these kind of experience reach predictable emotional reactions such as amazement, surprise, curiosity and puzzlement, and fear. On the other hand, some people are disturbed by psychic experiences and may need counseling, such as precognitive dreams, telepathy, poltergeist, perception of lights, out-of-the-body experiences, past lives memories, spiritual contacts, and mediumship. This study demonstrated the viability of adopting a psychological approach to better understand the anomalous/paranormal experiences.

Two personality constructs particularly germane to hypnotizability are mental boundaries and self-transcendence, because they seem to index the propensity to experience alterations in consciousness. We conducted 2 studies to evaluate their relations with behavioral and experiential measures of hypnotizability, and with absorption. In Study 1 (N = 112 U.S. participants), experiential, but not behavioral, measures of hypnotizability, correlated with the personal (e.g., porosity in interpersonal relations or in states of consciousness), but not the world (e.g., opinions of others), subscale of boundary thinness and with absorption. In Study 2 (N = 84 Swedish participants), self-transcendence as a whole, as well as 2 of its 3 subscales (self-forgetfulness and transpersonal identification) related to hypnotizability, especially as measured experientially. Absorption correlated with an index of experiential hypnotizability in both studies, but was not reliably related to behavioral hypnotizability. Women scored significantly higher than men in self-transcendence, and indeterminately so in experiential measures of hypnotizability. BACKGROUND
Anomalous/Paranormal Experiences (APEs) reported by nurses consist of apparitions, “coincidences,” death-bed visions, and other anomalous phenomena, sometimes in relation to patients.
AIMS
The aims were (1) to determine the extent of occurrence of APEs in nurses from one-single and multiple hospitals, and to relate them to work stress, absorption, schizotypy, hallucination and empathy, and (2) to carry out a retrospective study with a sample of interviewed nurses.
METHOD
We received 344 questionnaires from 36 hospitals in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which were grouped into 235 experiencers and 109 nonexperiencers. We hypothesized that nurses experiencers will tend to score higher on work stress, on schizotypy proneness, on absorption, and on empathy than those who do not report such experiences. Additionally, 38 nurses from three hospitals took part in a two-year retrospective APE´s qualitative approach.
RESULTS
Nurses reporting APEs did not tend to score higher on work stress, however, nurses reporting APEs scored higher on psychological absorption, proneness to hallucinate, and also scored higher on schizotypy, and cognitive/emotional comprehension than nurses nonexperiencers. Qualitative approach also showed that APEs differed from drug-induced hallucinations, occurred in clear consciousness and provided comfort and consolation for the bereaved.
CONCLUSIONS
Of the 344 nurses surveyed, 12–28% of them reported having had at least one anomalous experience. The most common anomalous experiences reported as experiencers are sense of presence or apparitions, hearing strange noises, voices or dialogues, crying or complaining, and knowing the disease intuitively; and as listeners of their patients/peers’ experiences, are near death experiences, anomalous healing after religious intervention, and experiences in relation with children. Interviewees’ reports suggested that APEs are not uncommon.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Absorption, the ability to highly focus attention, as well as openness to self-altering experiences, is an important psychological construct, closely related to deep-meditation states and other altered states of consciousness. Yet, little is known about the electrophysiological profile of states of absorption, possibly due to the difficulty to induce this state in the lab. While most studies have used a visual Ganzfeld (homogeneous perceptual field), here we use a novel technique of full immersion-the OVO Whole-Body Perceptual Deprivation (OVO-WBPD) chamber, which is an altered sensory environment in the form of a human-sized egg. Consequently, the aims of the current study were to investigate whether the OVO-WBPD chamber induces state absorption, using first-person reports, as well as to examine electrophysiological change following immersion in this altered sensory environment. Fourteen participants volunteered to participate in the study. Trait absorption was measured using the Tellegen Absorption Scale (TAS). State absorption was assessed by analyzing the content of the subjective reports, using sub-categories of the absorption construct (e.g., synesthesia). EEG was measured before and during a 20-min OVO-WBPD experience. Using exact low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (eLORETA), we analyzed change in oscillatory EEG activity and localized the generators of the scalp EEG power spectra following the OVO-WBPD. Our results show that OVO-WBPD immersion leads to a state of absorption in all participants. We also report significant increased oscillatory activity in the delta and beta bands, in the left inferior frontal cortex, with a peak in the sub-lobar of the left insula. In addition, a positive correlation was found between change in delta activity and trait absorption. The results are discussed in light of other meditative practices and altered states of consciousness.

Previous work demonstrated that placebo brain stimulation can function as an experimental tool to elicit mystical and quasi-mystical (i.e., extraordinary) experiences. However, it has not yet been investigated whether these effects result from mere sensory deprivation and individual differences in suggestibility, or whether expectancy manipulations are crucial in eliciting these effects. In this study, we showed that extraordinary experiences could be systematically manipulated by means of an expectancy manipulation using a within-subjects design, while controlling for suggestibility effects. We further observed that participants' score on the Tellegen absorption scale, an individual difference measure reflecting people's propensity to get immersed in external stimuli or mental imagery, is related to the frequency and intensity of such experiences. Finally, we investigated the relationship between extraordinary experiences and agency detection, which has been hypothesized to be associated to supernatural beliefs and experiences. The experimental induction of extraordinary experiences did not result in increased agency detection.

Sense of Presence (75%), Apparitional Experience (29%), and Spirit Possession (19%), were more frequent in S1 compared to S2 (34%, 5%, and 5%, respectively). For S1, respondents with a high frequency of EEEs tended to be extroverted, have a high propensity for unusual experiences (a schizotypy factor), and score high on 'thin' boundary and transliminality. The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Some people seem to have a ‘talent’ for spiritual experience: they readily sense the presence of supernatural beings, receive special messages from God, and report intense feelings of self-transcendence, awe and wonder. Here we review converging strands of evidence to argue that the trait of 'absorption' captures a general proclivity for having spiritual experiences. Participants scoring highly on the Tellegen Absorption Scale report vivid experiences of hearing God's voice during prayer, intense mystical experiences in response to psychedelics or placebo brain-stimulation, and strong feelings of presence and transcendence when confronted with natural beauty, virtual reality, or music. Several mechanisms may help to explain the relationship between absorption and spiritual experience. We suggest that absorption captures an experiential mindset that intensifies inner and outer sensory experience in ways that reflect both prior expectation and novel sensory engagement. It seems to enable that which must be imagined to feel more real.

In this paper, we relate meditation practice to participant trait absorption, affect, and transcendent experience. The motivation for this analysis stems from a new neurophenomenological model of consciousness which we recently published, named the consciousness state space. Here, we compare two distinct forms of meditation: mindfulness and transcendental meditation, as well as two different levels of expertise within the mindfulness group. Participants comprised 64 mindfulness practitioners, 18 transcendental meditation practitioners, and 59 healthy controls, who had no prior meditation experience. We further split our mindfulness participants into two groups, using a cutoff point of 2000 h of accumulated experience. We tested three predictions. The first prediction was that contemplative practices should result in increased first-order awareness as a trait, or trait absorption. Our findings revealed that meditators (in general) scored higher on trait absorption than comparable controls, with no difference between meditators from the two traditions. A second prediction was that contemplative practices should result in a reduced sense of regular (narrative) self; hence, transcendent experience should be enhanced for long-term practitioners of meditation. Our findings show that meditators (in general) score higher on the Mystical Scale than comparable controls, with no difference between meditators from the two traditions. We further predicted that contemplative practices should result in lower positive and negative valence, measured by Positive Affect and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) scores on both positive and negative affect scales, as a trait, but this hypothesis was only partly supported by the data.

The objective of this study was to explore the frequency of certain unusual perceptual experiences within hospital environments - those denominated anomalous and paranormal experiences - which are reported by medical and nursing personnel, and to compare the degree of work stress, schizoid features tendency, absorption and empathy with the patient. Three scales were used with 344 nurses from 36 hospitals and health centers in Buenos Aires, Argentina, grouped in those who had had these unusual experiences (n = 235) and those who had not (n = 109). The related most common unusual experiences included feeling a presence, listening to noises, voices, dialogs, cries, or complaints, having extra-sensorial or intuitive feelings related to the patients, and/or their own patients feeling the same situations in addition to other death proximity, praying, and spontaneous healings related experiences, and others experiences manifested by children. Regarding the results, the nurses who had these unusual experiences, also had higher scores in the factor Depersonalization, showing more absorption and schizoid features tendency, as well as more cognitive empathy and emotional comprehension, in comparison to those nurses who had not had these unusual experiences. We believe that some nurses could be better trained in order to adequately address their patients’ suffering and dying processes.
