A new book to help the dying, their loved ones and their health care workers better understand the dying process and to come to terms with death itself.
The Art of Dying is a contemporary version of the medieval Ars Moriendi-a manual on how to achieve a good death. Peter Fenwick is an eminent neuropsychiatrist, academic and expert on disorders of the brain. His most compelling and provocative research has been into the end of life phenomena, including near-death experiences and deathbed visions of the dying person, as well as the experiences of hospice and palliative care workers and relatives of dying people. Dr. Fenwick believes that consciousness may be independent of the brain and so able to survive the death of the brain, a theory which has divided the scientific community. The "problem with death" is deeply rooted in our culture and the social organization of death rituals. Fenwick believes that with serious engagement and through further investigation of these phenomena, he can help change attitudes so that we in the West can face up to death, and embrace it as a significant and sacred part of life. We have become used to believing that we have to shield each other from the idea of death. Fear of death means we view it as something to be fought every step of the way.
Aimed at a broad popular readership, The Art of Dying looks at how other cultures have dealt with death and the dying process (The Tibetan "death system", Swedenborg, etc.) and compares this with phenomena reported through recent scientific research. It describes too the experiences of health care workers who are involved with end of life issues who feel that they need a better understanding of the dying process, and more training in how to help their patients die well by overcoming the common barriers to a good death, such as unfinished business and unresolved emotions of guilt or hate.
From descriptions of the phenomena encountered by the dying and those around them, to mapping out ways in which we can die a "good death", this book is an excellent basis for helping people come to terms with death.

The attitude towards death and dying depends on the culture. In prehistoric times grave artifacts suggest a belief in the continuation of life. This belief in an afterlife has continued through different cultures and societies to the present day. The fear of death seems to have grown in parallel with those religions which have promised judgment at the time of death. In our modern Western secular society death is regarded as a medical failure, the rituals which used to attend it have largely been abandoned, and life is prolonged so that death has lost all dignity. It is now beginning to be recognised that dying may not be a simple switching off, but a process leading to death and the gradual dissolution of consciousness. This dissolution seems to involve experiences for the dying which are spiritual and important for them. A number of these phenomena raise the possibility that consciousness may not be limited to the brain, but extend beyond it. Fortunately, palliative care is now taught in medical schools, and treatment of the dying is now recognised to be as important as treatment for the living. This article looks at the history of death, the significance of the dying process for consciousness research, and the education needed for carers of the dying.

OBJECTIVE:
The goal of this research project is to examine the interactions between mental and neural activity. In
particular, whether the conscious states of a human observer can have an empirically detectable effect on neuronal activity.
METHOD:
The study used two experimental setups. Both created a cooperative interaction between a subject and a
separate neuronal system, based in one setup on EEG measurement from a second subject, and in the other on monitoring the activity in a neuronal dish. The EEG setup involved a player and a second subject. The player participates in a computer controlled tracking game developed for the study. EEG signals are measured from the EEG-subject. The success of the player’s game is dependent on a combination of the tracking action, together with a signal from the EEG recording. The experimental test is whether there will be a detectable interaction between the observer’s response and the recorded EEG signal. In the neuronal dish setup we placed a dish next to the player, with a physiologically active culture of rat hippocampal neurons. The cursor on the screen moves in response to the player’s strokes, combined with a signal from the neuronal culture. We then compare the dish signal during game and non-game periods.
RESULTS:
Overall, the EEG signal during game time was slightly increased, but a larger body of data will be required
for full statistical analysis. It will be of interest to incorporate learning algorithms to search for subsets of electrodes which show an enhanced effect. In the neuronal dish, considerable effort was invested in developing methods for growing stable active neuronal cultures. In most cultures, the variability in spike rates made it impossible to obtain statistically significant results. In only one dish culture was the activity during game and pause periods significantly different, and in this case the activity during game period was higher that during reference period.
CONCLUSIONS:
Both methods are novel and challenging, and required significant development work. The EEG-based method is less direct, but it proved more robust and easier to use. We have reached a stage where the collection and
analysis of a larger body of data for further statistical analysis is feasible. In the neuronal dish setup the variability in the signal across test game sessions is still high. Further testing will benefit from cultures, currently under development, with higher activity and lower variability.

OBJECTIVES:
A key objective of this project was to examine how people use communicative resources and linguistic tools to verbalise reflections on their own experience of consciousness. It is anticipated that the results of the project would be of benefit to parapsychologists interested in the ways in which mentations may reveal the working of anomalous communicative processes in ordinary consciousness.
METHODS:
Data consisted of audio recordings of the mentation stage of ganzfeld ESP experiments conducted at the Koestler Parapsychology Unit at the University of Edinburgh during the 1990s. These recordings were transcribed according to the conventions of conversation analysis.
Data were analysed using conversation analysis. This is a qualitative method for the examination of the structural, interpersonal and normative properties of naturally occurring verbal interaction. It has previously been used in study of experimenter-subject interaction in ganzfeld experiments, in studies of reports of spontaneous psi related experiences, and in studies of the language of psychic practitioners.
RESULTS:
The empirical analysis has discovered various communicative practices by which participants in ganzfeld experiment produce mentation reports. Analysis focused on The institutional character of the discourse of mentation reports (how descriptions of inner experience are designed to address the institutional, experimental and laboratory context in which the report is produced);
The management of rights and responsibilities
(how subjects display their tacit understanding of the normative obligations and expectations that underpin participation in laboratory procedures);
The playfulness of mentation discourse
(how subjects used poetic discourse in the mentations, and how these poetical features impinged on the content of the report).
CONCLUSIONS:
In various publications, we have argued that, in the use of introspective data, it may be necessary for parapsychologists and consciousness researchers to try to take account of the social and interpersonal properties of discourse and communication. This is because what is taken to be the content of a report may be inextricability tied to the discourse practices through which it is made available to the researcher.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
In this project the relationship between subjectively estimated time in REM lucid dreams and real time has been studied. In general, earlier studies on dream research showed a rather strong correlation between the duration in dreams and wakefulness. However, for lucid dreaming we found that performing squads took lucid dreamers more time than in the waking state while for counting the same participants showed no differences between dreaming and wakefulness. To find out if the task modality, the task length or the task complexity require longer times in lucid dreams than in wakefulness three experiments were conducted. In experiment 1 and 2, lucid dreamers spent two to three non-consecutive nights in the sleep laboratory with PSG recording and were asked to either count from 1-10, 1-20 and 1-30 or walk 10, 20 or 30 steps in wakefulness and in their lucid dreams. While dreaming they marked onset of lucidity as well as beginning and end of the counting task with a Left-Right-Left-Right eye movement and reported their dreams after being awakened. In the third experiment, participants performed an exercise involving gymnastics elements such as various jumps and a roll. As a general result we found – as in the study before – that performing a task in the lucid dream requires more time than in wakefulness. This tendency was found for all three tasks. However, there was no difference for the task modality (counting vs. motor task). Also the relative time for the different lengths of the tasks showed no difference. And finally, the more complex motor task (gymnastic routine) did not require more time in lucid dreams than the simple motor task.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A double-slit optical system was used to test the possible role of consciousness in the collapse of the quantum wavefunction. The ratio of the interference pattern's double-slit spectral power to its single-slit spectral power was predicted to decrease when attention was focused toward the double slit as compared to away from it. Each test session consisted of 40 counterbalanced attention-toward and attention-away epochs, where each epoch lasted between 15 and 30 s. Data contributed by 137 people in six experiments, involving a total of 250 test sessions, indicate that on average the spectral ratio decreased as predicted (,). Another 250 control sessions conducted without observers present tested hardware, software, and analytical procedures for potential artifacts; none were identified (,). Variables including temperature, vibration, and signal drift were also tested, and no spurious influences were identified. By contrast, factors associated with consciousness, such as meditation experience, electrocortical markers of focused attention, and psychological factors including openness and absorption, significantly correlated in predicted ways with perturbations in the double-slit interference pattern. The results appear to be consistent with a consciousness-related interpretation of the quantum measurement problem.

Advanced meditators occasionally report experiences of timelessness, or states of awareness that seem to transcend the usual boundaries of the subjective present. This type of experience was investigated in eight experienced meditators and eight matched controls by measuring 32 channels of EEG before, during, and after exposure to unpredictable light and sound stimuli. The experiment postulated that if some aspect of consciousness extends beyond the present moment, then prestimulus electrocortical signals should differ depending on stimuli that were about to be selected by a truly random process, and that if such experiences were catalyzed through meditation practice, then prestimulus differences should be more apparent in meditators than in nonmeditators. Each of the 32 EEG channels was baseline adjusted on each trial by the electrical potential averaged between two- and one-second prestimulus, then for each channel the average potential was determined from one-second prestimulus to stimulus onset. The resulting means across subjects in each group were compared by stimulus type using randomized permutation procedures and corrected for multiple comparisons. Within the control group, no EEG channels showed significant prestimulus differences between light versus sound stimulus conditions, but within the meditator group five of 32 channels resulted in significant differences (P < .05, two tailed). Comparisons between control and meditator groups showed significant prestimulus differences prior to audio tone stimuli in 14 of 32 channels (P < .05, two tailed, of which eight channels were P < .005, two tailed). This outcome successfully replicates effects reported in earlier experiments, suggesting that sometimes the subjective sense of awareness extending into the future may be ontologically accurate.

Hypnosis can be seen as a guided induction of various states of consciousness. This article details a time-series analysis that visualized the electrophysiological state changes during a session as a correlate to the instructions. Sixty-four channels of EEG and peripheral physiological measures were recorded in 1 highly susceptible subject. Significant state changes occurred synchronously with specific induction instructions. Some patterns could be physiologically explained, such as sensorimotor desynchronization over the right hemispheric hand area during left arm levitation. There was a highly significant increase in broadband activity during the stepwise trance induction that may point to a deep hypnotic state. This study provides illustrated proof for the detectability of physiological state changes as correlates to different states of awareness, consciousness, or cognition during hypnosis.

Material reductionism – the prevailing metaphysical view that reality can be understood entirely in terms of non-conscious physical stuff – is at odds with the existence of experience, the flow of time, and the privileged present. We propose an alternative scientifically-grounded metaphysical perspective that posits: (1) Consciousness represents a fundamental aspect of reality such that all material things enjoy some varying degree of consciousness (panpsychism); (2) nervous systems entail a nested hierarchy of distinct conscious observers; (3) both experience and the flow of time suggest the reality of a subjective realm of existence; (4) the flow of time suggests a process by which all observers collectively sample segments of continuous space/time at different rates, creating a composite of experienced moments of varying thickness; (5) the possibility that consciousness can influence the duration and selection of experienced moments affords a possible opportunity for genuine free will. Although speculative, these conjectures illustrate the type of alternative metaphysics that may be able to accommodate scientific observations without abandoning the self-evident facts that experience exists and time flows.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Objectives: Numerous studies using electroencephalography (EEG) have shown how brain
physiological signals correlate with processes of cognition, awareness and states of consciousness
during meditation. While most experimental EEG studies report only on one specific group of
meditators we have measured experienced meditators from various traditions assuming a
methodological overlap between many practices. We assessed their meditation methods, selfrated
mindfulness and exceptional experiences. Correlating those subjective measures with
physiological data is supposed to give an objective estimate of the validity of these subjective
concepts and experiences.
Methods: Fifty participants with various meditation experiences ranging from no experience to
more than 10.000 hours of meditation have been measured with 64-channels of EEG. The
measurements consisted of resting states, a self-selected personal meditation session, and a short
guided meditation in which different meditative tasks.
Results: The connection between mindfulness, a positive evaluation of mystical experiences, and a
decreased psychopathology could be demonstrated in subjective self-ratings but also in the
gamma activity of resting state EEG. The same could be observed in the EEG coherence of beta
band activity. While meditation essentially was found to be a state of reduced lower frequencies,
the beta1 amplitudes seem to increase in parietal areas similarly to the state of presence. Also,
meditation experience and mindfulness are correlated with mental health and positive
experiences.
Discussion: The results, especially high frequency EEG correlations, strongly support the idea that a
state of mindful presence and an attitude of acceptance are closely related to psychological health
and a positive acceptance of mystical experiences while it is negatively correlated with
psychopathological experiences. Highly significant brain state changes between various meditative
tasks in experienced meditators indicate that meditation trained persons show higher brain
dynamics than less experienced people.
Conclusions: The results suggest the hypothesis that experienced meditators may be able to
experience themselves in more different ways offering them a higher range of mental possibilities
compared to non-meditators. Further, due to its
physiological correlates the concept of mindfulness seems to be more than a subjective selfesteem.

Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.

Awareness of Action and the Attribution of Agency are Key Issues in the Neuroscientific Study of Consciousness

Attribution of agency involves the ability to distinguish our own actions and their sensory consequences which are self-generated from those generated by external agents. Although we are normally aware of our motor intentions and goals, we do not have conscious access to all our motor commands and every fi ne motor adjustment. Certain components of these internal representations may become available to awareness when the discrepancy between the predicted and the actual sensory consequences of an action is large. The exact threshold above which this perceptual-motor conflict becomes available to awareness is currently a focus of intensive research. Healthy subjects may be poorly aware of their motor performance. In patients with prefrontal lesions, deafferentation and schizophrenia, perceptual-motor awareness is severely impaired. We hypothesize that if there are pathologies with a detrimental effect on the sense of self-agency, then meditation, known to improve self-awareness, might infl uence the cognitive processes related to the implicit and conscious monitoring of actions. In fact, brain areas linked to meditation-related alterations in self-awareness are also known to be associated to the experience of self-agency. This connection offers a pathway for behavioral measurements of spirituality. Mindfulness, the continuous non-judgmental awareness of moment to moment experience, is often used as a spiritually-based clinical intervention for a large set of conditions. But the degree of mindfulness which is important to measure in clinical trials is so far only accessible indirectly via questionnaires. Few studies have shown a positive correlation between visuomotorn performance and bodily self-awareness with meditation practice. Nevertheless, a direct assessment of meditationrelated cortical processes during a sensorimotor integration task remained largely unexplored. We investigate the impact of mindfulness meditation on EEG activity, visuomotor performance and perceptual-motor awareness in meditators during a confl icting sensorimotor task, where the congruency between actions and their sensory consequences is altered. The experimental device consists of a digitizing tablet connected to a video projector via a computer and a “projection tablet”. When tracing a line on the digitizing tablet, the subjects see in the “projection tablet” a projected line coming from the video projector. In order to provide a false feedback, a simple algorithm for introducing an angular bias is used. The task is to draw a straight line between the starting point and the target. Subjects are instructed to move mindfully with moment to moment awareness their hand at a moderate speed. After each trial participants are asked to report their perception of the bias-induced movement distortion. This task is presented to novices in meditation before and after an intensive 8 weeks mindfulness programme (MBSR: mindfulness based stress reduction)
data of this sample is compared to a group of long-term meditators and a group of healthy non-meditators. In this oral presentation the analysis of visuomotor performance and sense of self-agency in short-term meditators before and after the MBSR course will be reported.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. OBJECTIVES:
This project involved the development of a “smartphone” application package and back-end data collection network resulting in a low-cost random event generator (REG) system for the mobile phone. The application would provide data for a preliminary investigation into mindmatter effects using existing mobile devices, while providing individuals with personal experiences and insight into the role of consciousness in the physical world.
METHODS & RESULTS:
An investigation of a method to generate true-random numbers from the internal hardware of a smartphone device resulted in a successful technique to convert processes within an Apple iPhone's accelerometer into random binary numbers which passed statistical tests of randomness. An intuitive graphical interface was developed for the iPhone to generate, utilize, and transmit data. Server-side algorithms were implemented to collect, database, and analyze transmitted data.
CONCLUSIONS & DISCUSSION:
The effort has established both the viability and the core technology behind what could be a new generation of research techniques into consciousness-correlated physical phenomena. The establishment of a large-volume distributed REG network would have the potential to reveal correlations among individual, regional, and global consciousness effects. The wide availability of smartphones offers new possibilities in mobile computing that can extend this research to a much larger community of users, while eliminating many of the costs and complexities associated with strictly hardware-based methods of the same.
