The two-stage model of receptive psi is a reasonable starting point for understanding how ESP enters consciousness and affects behaviour. Whereas Stage 1-how ESP "gets into the system"-remains a mystery, Stage 2 is thought to involve normal cognitive processes. If evolution has conferred upon humans the ability to make use of anomalous information then it is likely to follow the pattern in which existing brain systems are adapted and enhanced to confer new advantages. Roll and Irwin have proposed memory as a candidate for one such brain system co-opted for service with ESP. This paper proposes that the emotional system also plays a role in receptive psi, perhaps an even more fundamental one than memory. Recent research suggests that the emotional system is involved in selecting the memory images that comprise dreams, as well as influencing the attention we devote to the memory images that parade across waking consciousness. Damasio's work has highlighted the role of the emotional system, especially subtle bodily feelings, in decision-making, thus providing a link with behavioural responses that might be psi-influenced in Stanford's PMIR model, as well as providing insight into intuitive spontaneous cases. Evolution has already designed the emotional system's operation to be automatic, unconscious, and not easily subject to intentional control, characteristics traditionally attributed to receptive psi, so it is conceivable that this system has been adapted by evolution to serve as a "pathway" for anomalous information. The rapidly advancing understanding of the emotional system calls for new and imaginative experiments to examine the joint roles of memory and emotion in the effective use of anomalous information.

For more than a quarter century, the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) laboratory has engaged in a broad range of experiments on consciousness-related physical anomalies and has proposed a corresponding selection of theoretical models that have combined to illuminate the fundamental nature of the provocative phenomena that emerge. Productive pursuit of this topic has inescapably involved a spectrum of political, cultural, personal, and interpersonal factors that are normally not encountered in more conventional scientific scholarship, but have both enriched and complicated the enterprise in many ways. Some of the insights gleaned from the work are objectively specifiable, such as the scale and structural character of the anomalous effects; their relative insensitivity to objective physical correlates, including distance and time; the oscillating sequential patterns of performance they display; the major discrepancies between male and female achievements; and their irregular replicability at all levels of experience. But many others relate to subjective issues, such as the responsiveness of the effects to conscious and unconscious intention and to individual and collective resonance; the relevance of ambience and attitude in their generation; and the importance of intrinsic uncertainty as a source of the anomalies. This blend of empirical features predicates radical excursions of the dedicated models, and hence of the more general scientific paradigms, to allow consciousness and its subjective information processing capacities a proactive role in the establishment of objective reality, with all of the complications of specificity, causality, and reproducibility that entails. The attendant complexities of conceptualization, formulation, and implementation notwithstanding, pragmatic applications of these phenomena in many sectors of public endeavor now can be foreseen.

Is consciousness limited to perception of the sensory present and
memory of the past, or does it also have access to future information? In an
experiment designed to explore this question, a computer was used to randomly
select and present target photos from a pool of digitized photographs.
Some targets labeled "calm" included landscapes and cheerful people; other
targets labeled "extreme" included violent and erotic topics. Heart rate, blood
volume, and electrodermal activity were recorded before, during and after
presentation of the target photo to see whether the body would unconsciously
respond differentially to the two types of future targets. Extreme targets
were expected to produce classical orienting responses after the targets were
displayed, and a "presentiment" (future feeling) effect was predicted to produce
orienting pre-sponses before the pictures were displayed. Calm targets
were expected to cause no unusual responses before or after the target was
displayed. Four experiments, involving 3 1 participants who viewed a total of
1,060 target photos, showed the expected orienting response after the target
photo was displayed. In accordance with a presentiment hypothesis, there
was a clear orienting pre-sponse that peaked with a four standard error difference
in physiological measures between extreme and calm targets one second
before the target photo was displayed.

Previously reported experiments suggested that interference patterns generated by a double-slit optical system were perturbed by a psychophysical (i.e., mind-matter) interaction. Three new experiments were conducted to further investigate this phenomenon. The first study consisted of 50 half-hour test sessions where participants concentrated their attention-toward or -away from a double-slit system located 3?m away. The spectral magnitude and phase associated with the double-slit component of the interference pattern were compared between the two attention conditions, and the combined results provided evidence for an interaction (effect size?=?-0.73?±?0.14, p?=?2.4?×?10-7). One hundred control sessions using the same equipment, protocol and analysis, but without participants present, showed no effect (effect size?=?0.04?±?0.10, p?=?0.71). A Fraunhofer diffraction model was used to explore various interpretations of this outcome. This analysis suggested that the distribution of light between the two slits and the horizontal stability of the laser beam were the principle components of the optical system that were perturbed. The second experiment used a duplicate double-slit system and similar test protocol, but it was conducted over the Internet by streaming data to participants' web browsers. Some 685 people from six continents contributed 2089 experimental sessions. Results were similar to those observed in the first experiment, but smaller in magnitude (effect size?=?-0.09?±?0.02, p?=?2.6?×?10-6). Data from 2303 control sessions, conducted automatically every 2?h using the same equipment but without observers showed no effect (effect size?=?-0.01?±?0.02, p?=?0.61). Distance between participants and the optical system, ranging from 1?km to 18,000?km, showed no correlation with experimental effect size. The third experiment used a newly designed double-slit system, a revised test protocol, and a simpler method of statistical analysis. Twenty sessions contributed by 10 participants successfully replicated the interaction effect observed in the first two studies (effect size?=?-0.62?±?0.22, p?=?0.006).

Every experience, those we are aware of and those we are not, is embedded in a subjective timeline, is tinged with emotion, and inevitably evokes a certain sense of self. Here, we present a phenomenological model for consciousness and selfhood which relates time, awareness, and emotion within one framework. The consciousness state space (CSS) model is a theoretical one. It relies on a broad range of literature, hence has high explanatory and integrative strength, and helps in visualizing the relationship between different aspects of experience. Briefly, it is suggested that all phenomenological states fall into two categories of consciousness, core and extended (CC and EC, respectively). CC supports minimal selfhood that is short of temporal extension, its scope being the here and now. EC supports narrative selfhood, which involves personal identity and continuity across time, as well as memory, imagination and conceptual thought. The CSS is a phenomenological space, created by three dimensions: time, awareness and emotion. Each of the three dimensions is shown to have a dual phenomenological composition, falling within CC and EC. The neural spaces supporting each of these dimensions, as well as CC and EC, are laid out based on the neuroscientific literature. The CSS dynamics include two simultaneous trajectories, one in CC and one in EC, typically antagonistic in normal experiences. However, this characteristic behavior is altered in states in which a person experiences an altered sense of self. Two examples are laid out, flow and meditation. The CSS model creates a broad theoretical framework with explanatory and unificatory power. It constructs a detailed map of the consciousness and selfhood phenomenology, which offers constraints for the science of consciousness. We conclude by outlining several testable predictions raised by the CSS model.

BACKGROUND
Cardiac arrest (CA) survivors experience cognitive deficits including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is unclear whether these are related to cognitive/mental experiences and awareness during CPR. Despite anecdotal reports the broad range of cognitive/mental experiences and awareness associated with CPR has not been systematically studied.
METHODS:
The incidence and validity of awareness together with the range, characteristics and themes relating to memories/cognitive processes during CA was investigated through a 4 year multi-center observational study using a three stage quantitative and qualitative interview system. The feasibility of objectively testing the accuracy of claims of visual and auditory awareness was examined using specific tests. The outcome measures were (1) awareness/memories during CA and (2) objective verification of claims of awareness using specific tests.
RESULTS:
Among 2060 CA events, 140 survivors completed stage 1 interviews, while 101 of 140 patients completed stage 2 interviews. 46% had memories with 7 major cognitive themes: fear; animals/plants; bright light; violence/persecution; deja-vu; family; recalling events post-CA and 9% had NDEs, while 2% described awareness with explicit recall of ‘seeing’ and ‘hearing’ actual events related to their resuscitation. One had a verifiable period of conscious awareness during which time cerebral function was not expected.
CONCLUSIONS:
CA survivors commonly experience a broad range of cognitive themes, with 2% exhibiting full awareness. This supports other recent studies that have indicated consciousness may be present despite clinically undetectable consciousness. This together with fearful experiences may contribute to PTSD and other cognitive deficits post CA.

Our intuitive concept of the relations between brain and mind is increasingly challenged by the scientific world view. Yet, although few neuroscientists openly endorse Cartesian dualism, careful reading reveals dualistic intuitions in prominent neuroscientific texts. Here, we present the “double-subject fallacy”: treating the brain and the entire person as two independent subjects who can simultaneously occupy divergent psychological states and even have complex interactions with each other—as in “my brain knew before I did.” Although at first, such writing may appear like harmless, or even cute, shorthand, a closer look suggests that it can be seriously misleading. Surprisingly, this confused writing appears in various cognitive-neuroscience texts, from prominent peer-reviewed articles to books intended for lay audience. Far from being merely metaphorical or figurative, this type of writing demonstrates that dualistic intuitions are still deeply rooted in contemporary thought, affecting even the most rigorous practitioners of the neuroscientific method. We discuss the origins of such writing and its effects on the scientific arena as well as demonstrate its relevance to the debate on legal and moral responsibility.

BACKGROUND
The quantum measurement problem refers to the well-established but still mysterious fact that quantum objects behave differently when observed than when not observed.
AIM
To help empirically inform this problem, we conducted an experiment to see if mental attention directed toward a single-photon double-slit system would cause a change in the interference pattern.
METHOD
Photons arriving at an interference pattern minimum were counted per second while participants were asked to direct their attention toward or away from the double-slit. If consciousness "collapsed" the quantum wavefunction through the passively act of mental observation, then during attention-toward periods we predicted that photon counts at the minimum would increase.
RESULTS
After a pilot study and six formal experiments, the results showed a modest (2 sigma) decrease in photon counts, opposite to our prediction. However, some of the experiments resulted in a strong count decrease and others in a strong increase. The combined variance across experiments was associated with a 4.5 sigma increase, indicating an unstable, anomalous effect.
CONCLUSION
These studies did not provide evidence for a passive collapse of the quantum wavefunction, but rather a more active effect possibly modulated by the context of the observation, created by the feedback used to mentally "connect" the participants to the optical system. This steering effect seems reminiscent of a quantum Zeno or anti-Zeno phenomenon.

INTRODUCTION:
Aberrations of visual experience, including visual hallucinations and visual distortions, are known to be associated with increased cortical hyperexcitability. As a consequence, the presence, intensity and frequency of certain experiences may
well be indicative of an underlying increase in cortical hyperexcitability.
METHOODS:
The current study presents a new proxy measure of cortical hyperexcitability, the Cortical Hyperexcitability Index (CHi). Two hundred and fifty healthy participants completed the CHi with the results subjected to exploratory factor analysis (EFA).
RESULTS:
The EFA revealed a three-factor model as the most parsimonious solution. The three factors were defined as: (1) heightened visual sensitivity and discomfort; (2) negative aura-type visual aberrations; and (3) positive aura-type visual aberrations. The identification of three factors suggests that multiple mechanisms underlie the notion of cortical hyperexcitability, providing researchers with new and greater precision in delineating these underlying features.
CONCLUSIONS:
The factorial structure of the CHi and the increased precision could aid the interpretation of findings from neuroscientific (i.e., brain imaging/stimulation) examinations of cortical processes underlying aberrant perceptions across a host of
clinical, neurological and pathological conditions. As a consequence, the CHi is a useful and comprehensive proxy measure of cortical hyperexcitability with considerable scientific and clinical utility.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Six experiments were conducted using a single-photon double-slit apparatus to test von Neumann's notion that the quantum wavefunction is “collapsed” by what he called a psychophysical interaction. Individuals were asked to direct their attention toward or away from the optical system while receiving information about the number of photons arriving per second at an interference fringe minimum. Overall the experiments found evidence supportive of an interaction that appears to “steer” the wavefunction to either reduce or to sharpen interference fringes. This outcome informs efforts to unify subjective and objective modes of apprehending the world because it suggests that these two apparently different ways of knowing may be complementary aspects of a unitary phenomenon, analogous to how a Möbius strip appears to have two sides, but when examined is found to have only one. The correlations observed in our experiments can be interpreted in two main ways: as a form of mind-matter interaction, which implies a dualistic model, or as arising from a common source, which implies a monist model. We propose that a monist model is a more satisfying explanation.

The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).

Investigating expectation effects using multiple physiological measures

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The study aimed at experimentally investigating whether the human body can anticipate future events under improved methodological conditions. Previous studies have reported contradictory results for the phenomenon typically called presentiment. If the positive findings are accurate, they call into doubt our views about human perception, and if they are inaccurate, a plausible conventional explanation might be based on the experimental design of the previous studies, in which expectation due to item sequences was misinterpreted as presentiment. To address these points, we opted to collect several physiological variables, to test different randomization types and to manipulate subjective significance individually. For the latter, we combined a mock crime scenario, in which participants had to steal specific items, with a concealed information test (CIT), in which the participants had to conceal their knowledge when interrogated about items they had stolen or not stolen. We measured electrodermal activity, respiration, finger pulse, heart rate (HR), and reaction times. The participants (n = 154) were assigned randomly to four different groups. Items presented in the CIT were either drawn with replacement (full) or without replacement (pseudo) and were either presented category-wise (cat) or regardless of categories (nocat). To understand how these item sequences influence expectation and modulate physiological reactions, we compared the groups with respect to effect sizes for stolen vs. not stolen items. Group pseudo_cat yielded the highest effect sizes, and pseudo_nocat yielded the lowest. We could not find any evidence of presentiment but did find evidence of physiological correlates of expectation. Due to the design differing fundamentally from previous studies, these findings do not allow for conclusions on the question whether the expectation bias is being confounded with presentiment.

In an independent analysis of data from a double-slit experiment designed to investigate von Neumann-like psychophysical interactions, Baer [Phys. Essays 28, 47 (2015)] concluded that shifts in interference pattern minima showed a small but consistent effect in alignment with what we had previously reported. But because the standard deviation of those measurements was large compared with the mean, Baer concluded that the optical system was not sufficiently sensitive to provide convincing evidence of a psychophysical effect. However, this type of assessment should rely on standard error, not standard deviation. When the proper statistic is employed, Baer’s calculations show a modest but statistically significant deviation of the central minima in data contributed by human observers (p=0.05, one-tail), but not in sessions contributed by robot “observers” (p=0.26, one-tail). In addition, when considering the central minimum along with eight other minima, the human-observed grand mean was significantly larger than the robot-observed grand mean (p=0.008). Thus, Baer’s independent analysis confirmed that the optical apparatus used in this experiment was indeed sensitive enough to provide evidence for a psychophysical effect.
