Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The acceleration of the internal clock promoted by arousal of emotional stimuli has been suggested as the mechanism underlying the effects of emotion in time perception (i.e., time overestimation) outweighing the attentional effects (i.e., loss of temporal information) of processing such stimuli. However there is no empirical demonstration that these are indeed the explanatory factors of the influence of emotion on time perception, and even if this is how these factors interfere in time judgments. In this project we developed a set of experiments to disentangle these factors. We used physiological measures, able to provide independent indexes without disrupting the time estimation task, and examine mediation effects of these emotional dimensions on time perception. Additionally, we contrast the effects of emotions with the effects of other non-emotional feelings, familiarity and perceptual fluency in order to circumscribe the underlying processes. Our studies generally suggest that duration judgments were affected by emotional arousal, though this effect seems to be moderated by emotion type, valence, response delay, and arousal manipulation.
Nevertheless psychophysiological mediation analysis reveals a more complex process of time processing of emotion stimuli than predicted by ‘internal clock’ models. In addition, our studies imply that the feeling of stimulus familiarity and fluency is associated with a time overestimation. This effect is moderated by attention, also in an unpredicted way. Our results suggest surprisingly similar mechanisms on how the perceptual fluency, familiarity, and emotions influence the perception of time, and that somehow refutes the prevailing explanations in the literature. Together these results indicate a conjugation between the perception of temporal units and procedural changes of the stimuli, i.e., that temporal and nontemporal information are combined in the temporal estimates of emotional stimuli.

The emotional nature of a facial expression seems to distort perception of its duration. In this paper we present a study that tests the hypothesis of this effect be moderated by the emotional dimensions (valence and arousal) by addressing its explanation in terms of processes that interfere with the functioning of an "internal clock", including activation and attentional processes. Using a temporal bisection task with durations of between 400 and 1600 ms, the results suggest a valence effect: the duration of the negative faces is overestimated in relation to positive faces. This effect was moderated by the intensity of emotional expressions (arousal), been clearly observed only in the low arousal condition. In high arousal condition positive and negative faces were identically estimated. The fact that this interaction is found only in short time windows, suggests to us, a concurrent interference in activation and attentional processes. This explanation is discussed in the article, taking into account their limitations.

In two experiments, we examined affective responses and attentional bias toward threat. We compared three dimensions of affective responses (subjective, expressive, physiological) to negative and neutral stimuli in high and low anxious participants and examined whether these responses correlated with attentional interference in an emotional Stroop task. We measured facial EMG (Experiment 1), skin conductance (Experiment 2), and subjective evaluations (both experiments). High anxious participants displayed Stroop interference from negatively conditioned stimuli. Both high and low anxious participants showed increased facial expressions and physiological arousal to negatively conditioned stimuli during the Stroop task. Findings suggest that differences between high and low anxious participants are more important in the cognitive processing of threat than affective reactions to threat.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Placebo analgesia is the reduction in pain after administration of a placebo with information that it will reduce pain. We have shown that placebo analgesia can be objectively recorded by physiological measures (electromyography, heart rate variability, and event-related potentials (ERP)). Reduced ERPs indicate that placebos activate descending pain inhibitory pathways. The placebo response, or more precisely, the expectation of drug effects, can add to the effect of the drug. There is some evidence that placebo effects are strongest when expectations are reinforced by administration of an active drug. Of special importance to the present project was the investigation of the role of stress and negative emotions in placebo analgesia. Our hypothesis was that the placebo reduced stress and nervousness, and thereby reduced pain. Fear of pain was positively related to stress both during pain and in the anticipation of pain, and negatively related to placebo analgesia. However, other factors also contribute to the placebo analgesia. The present findings suggest that decreased stress may strengthen the placebo response. This may have important clinical consequences, as stress reduction could aid in treatment of pain. Furthermore, male subjects responded with lower stress after placebo medication, and larger placebo responses. These findings suggest that males respond differently to verbal placebo information compared to females. It is not know whether this is due to more effective pain inhibitory mechanisms in males, or to cognitive factors. In sum, there is a contribution of reduced stress to placebo analgesia, and for reasons unknown this effect is larger in males.

The hypothesis put forth is that expectations of treatment effects reduce negative emotions and thereby reduce symptoms, e.g. pain. Negative emotions increase pain, and it is hypothesized that placebos reduce pain by reducing negative emotions, i.e. feelings of nervousness, fear and anxiety. Placebo analgesia has been shown to be mediated via opioid activity, and relaxation increases opioid activity. The placebo acquires its relaxing effect due to verbal information that pain will be reduced, or due to associations between the placebo and the reduction in pain after effective treatment. Thus, the placebo signals that unpleasantness will be less after administration of the placebo. This involves negative reinforcement which is due to activation of a dopaminergic system that has been found to be activated during placebo analgesia and is involved in positive emotions. The nocebo effect of increased pain is, consistent with this model, because of increased fear and anxiety. The new aspect of the presented model is the hypothesis that expectations reduce negative emotions, and that negative reinforcement that involves the dopaminergic reinforcement system should be a contributor to placebo responses.

The latency of conditioned fear after delay and trace conditioning was investigated. Some argue that delay conditioning is not dependent on awareness. In contrast, trace conditioning, where there is a gap between the conditioned stimulus (CS) and the unconditioned stimulus (US), is assumed to be dependent on awareness. In the present study, a tone CS signaled a noise US presented 1000 ms after CS onset in the delay conditioning group. In the trace conditioning group, a 200-ms tone CS was followed by an 800-ms gap prior to US presentation. Fear-potentiated startle should be seen at shorter intervals after delay conditioning compared to trace conditioning. Analyses showed increased startle at 30, 50, 100, and 150 ms after CS onset following delay conditioning compared to trace conditioning. This implies that fear-relevant stimuli elicit physiological reactions before extended processing of the stimuli occur, following delay, but not trace conditioning.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The present study analyses the modulatory effects of affective pictures in the early posterior negativity (EPN), the late positive potential (LPP) and the human startle response on both the peripheral (eye blink EMG) and central neurophysiological levels (Probe P3), during passive affective pictures viewing. The affective pictures categories were balanced in terms of valence (pleasant; unpleasant) and arousal (high; low). The data shows that EPN may be sensitive to specific stimulus characteristics (affective relevant pictures versus neutral pictures) associated with early stages of attentional processing. In later stages, the heightened attentional resource allocation as well as the motivated significance of the affective stimuli was found to elicit enhanced amplitudes of slow wave processes thought to be related to enhanced encoding, namely LPP,. Although pleasant low arousing pictures were effective in engaging the resources involved in the slow wave processes, the highly arousing affective stimuli (pleasant and unpleasant) were found to produce the largest enhancement of the LPP, suggesting that high arousing stimuli may are associated with increased motivational significance. Additionally the response to high arousing stimuli may be suggestive of increased motivational attention, given the heightened attentional allocation, as expressed in the P3 probe, especially for the pleasant pictures. The hedonic valence may then serve as a mediator of the attentional inhibition to the affective priming, potentiating or inhibiting a shift towards defensive activation, as measured by the startle reflex.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
The main objectives of this work were to test if it was possible to conciliate Virtual Reality techniques with the recording of neurophysiological data, and to develop and validate new methodological paradigms to study the psychobiology of emotion.
The first study consisted in selecting 3D stimuli similar to those used in the traditional methodological approach to study emotion. We selected 131 stimuli, which were normalized and validated using the Self-Assessment Manikin, in a sample of 214 healthy subjects. The results obtained were consistent with previous studies conducted with 2D stimuli, allowing the development of a Database of Affective 3D Pictures.
In the second study, we tested if the induction of emotions with 3D stimulation techniques caused more intense emotional responses than with 2D techniques. To that end we recorded behavioral and peripheral physiological measures associated with the visualization of the three Scenarios in two modalities (2D vs.3D).
Results suggested that 3D visualization causes more intense emotional responses.
The third study aimed at testing the interference of emotional information in the neurocognitive processing, through Event-related Potential analysis in a dual-task auditory oddball paradigm. Our results showed that emotional induction through 3D stimulation recruits more attentional resources than through 2D stimulation, causing a greater interference in the cognitive processing.
Finally, in the fourth study, we presented indexes of brain activation obtained through Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) when subjects were exposed to the Scenarios in two modalities (2D vs. 3D). Results indicate that 3D visualization is associated to higher activation of the amygdala complex.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Objectivos - O presente estudo apresenta os dados normativos de um conjunto de estímulos gerados por computador, com o propósito de indução de emoções em ambientes de Realidade Virtual através de visualização estereoscópica activa.
Métodos - Seleccionamos um conjunto de objectos 3D, semelhantes aos que são utilizados na metodologia tradicional para o estudo experimental da emoção. Encontrámos 131 objectos que submetemos a normalização e validação numa amostra de 214 participantes saudáveis. Esse trabalho foi efectuado através do Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM).
Resultados - Os resultados revelam uma distribuição dos estímulos no espaço afectivo bidimensional (Valência * Intensidade), em forma de boomerang, significativamente diferente da distribuição resultante da validação original do International Affective Pictures System (IAPS) [1]. No entanto, a curva de distribuição resultante da nossa validação é ainda melhor. Para além disso verificámos que os Cenários de Indução Afectiva - 3D são discriminativos em termos de valência afectiva.
Conclusão - Estão, portanto, demonstradas as condições básicas para se introduzir a Realidade Virtual na investigação comportamental, possibilitando ultrapassar a passividade do participante perante a simples visualização de imagens de conteúdo afectivo 2D e aumentar a sensação de imersão e presença decorrentes da estimulação nos ambientes 3D.
