Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The focus of the study was to determine if electrical brain activity could differentiate between pleasant and unpleasant visual stimuli and/or loud and soft auditory stimuli. Forty right-handed female subjects enrolled. Visual stimuli were selected from a standardized set of pictures for studying emotion and attention (International Affective Picture System). Eighty pictures for each of three categories was selected: highly pleasant, unpleasant and emotionally neutral. Auditory stimuli consisted of 500 msec of either 55dB (soft) or 95dB (loud) sounds. Event related potentials were recorded 1200 msec prior to stimulus onset and continued 1000 msec after the auditory or visual stimulus onset. We hypothesized that post-stimulus effects would be found for both the visual and auditory conditions in brain areas specific to those sensory modalities. Post-stimulus late positivity effects were greater for unpleasant than pleasant visual stimuli. Early and late negativity brain potentials were increased for loud compared to soft auditory stimuli. Exploration of the full time course of the electrical activity was obtained. Statistically significant visual and auditory effects were
also seen in the pre-stimulus period. The results suggest that noxious visual and auditory stimuli produce regional effects consistent with their associated sensory modalities and differentially alter brain electrical activity compared to less noxious stimuli.

BACKGROUND
Neurocognitive processes underlying stable embodiment can breakdown, leading to striking aberrations in self-consciousness. These striking experiences are providing crucial insights not only into the nature of anomalous self-experience (and those prone to it), but into the more fundamental aspects of human self-consciousness per-se. As such, investigating anomalous aberrant experiences can be a potent method for examining previously ignored aspects of human behaviour and conscious experience.
AIMS
The project developed a new computer-based task for quantifying biases in body-representations and self-consciousness in those prone to different forms of aberrant conscious experience. The new task consists of dynamic movie clips and still photographic images.
METHOD
This new task was examined with event-related psychophysiology (skin conductance responses: SCRs) to provide an index of autonomic emotional reactivity and a series of behavioural ratings. Part of the project was directed at establishing this new measure (now termed the Body-Threat-Assessment Battery: BTAB) and another part directed at exploring its use with groups predisposed to dissociative hallucinatory experiences. The BTAB involves threats to real human limbs from different perspectives.
RESULTS & CONCLUSIONS
Initial findings have revealed the normative data for the BTAB measure. The BTAB has shown itself to be very effective at eliciting emotional responses (relative to non-body based baseline stimuli) in terms of both skin conductance responses and behavioural ratings. The manipulation of perspective has not revealed any reliable differences.

Is the self already relational in its very bodily foundations? The question of whether our mental life is initially and primarily shaped by embodied dimensions of the individual or by interpersonal relations is debated in many fields, including psychology, philosophy, psychoanalysis, and more recently, cognitive neuroscience. In this interdisciplinary target article, we put forward the radical claim that even some of the most minimal aspects of selfhood, namely the feeling qualities associated with being an embodied subject, are fundamentally shaped by embodied interactions with other people in early infancy and beyond. Such embodied interactions allow the developing organism to mentalize its homeostatic regulation. In other words, embodied interactions contribute directly to the building of mental models of the infant’s physiological states, given the need to maintain such states within a given dynamic range despite internal or external perturbations. Specifically, our position rests on the following three propositions: (1) the progressive integration and organization of sensory and motor signals constitutes the foundations of the minimal self, a process which we have linked to contemporary, computational models of brain function and named “embodied mentalization”; (2) interactions with other people are motivated and constrained by the same principles that govern the “mentalization” of sensorimotor signals in the individual – and hence the mentalization of one’s body can include signals from other bodies in physical proximity and interaction, especially in interaction with particular bodies. (3) Crucially, given the dependency of humans in early infancy, there is a “homeostatically necessary” plethora of such embodied “proximal” interactions, especially as regards interoception. Collectively, such experiences of proximal intercorporeality “sculpt” the mentalization process and hence the constitution of the minimal self, including the progressive sophistication of mental distinctions between “subject-object,” “self-other” and even “pleasure-pain.” Finally, we explore notions of cardiac and more broadly interoceptive awareness as later, cognitive acquisitions that allow us to progressively solidify such distinctions, as well as understand and empathise with other people.

To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).

One of the biggest challenges for researchers investigating altered states of consciousness (ASCs) has been the need for a
systematic framework to accurately describe the phenomenological characteristics of ASCs, as well as placing them in relation to regular states of consciousness. Here, we target these two challenges by employing a new and systematic model of consciousness, the consciousness state space (CSS), and presenting a typology of ASCs within the CSS model. Specifically, the CSS model describes two different levels of self, narrative and minimal, as concentric spheres along three dimensions - subjective time, awareness, and emotion - and creates a phenomenological state-space encompassing all possible states, with its proposed neural space. We describe several ASCs focusing on dreaming, hallucinogenic effects of drugs, and meditation, in order to demonstrate and draw several conclusions. Here we focus on two related alterations during ASCs pertaining to perception of time and the bodily self: (i) ASCs share a common ‘collapse’ of the time dimension towards a transitory state of ‘timelessness’; (ii) during extreme ASCs, body sensations are ‘cut-off’ or at least distorted.

Dogs have been shown to excel in reading human social cues, including facial cues. In the present study we used eye-tracking technology to further study dogs’ face processing abilities. It was found that dogs discriminated between human facial regions in their spontaneous viewing pattern and looked most to the eye region independently of facial expression. Furthermore dogs played most attention to the first two images presented, afterwards their attention dramatically decreases; a finding that has methodological implications. Increasing evidence indicates that the oxytocin system is involved in dogs’ human-directed social competence, thus as a next step we investigated the effects of oxytocin on processing of human facial emotions. It was found that oxytocin decreases dogs’ looking to the human faces expressing angry emotional expression. More interestingly, however, after oxytocin pre-treatment dogs’ preferential gaze toward the eye region when processing happy human facial expressions disappears. These results provide the first evidence that oxytocin is involved in the regulation of human face processing in dogs. The present study is one of the few empirical investigations that explore eye gaze patterns in naïve and untrained pet dogs using a non-invasive eye-tracking technique and thus offers unique but largely untapped method for studying social cognition in dogs.

Affective interoceptive inference: Evidence from heart-beat evoked brain potentials

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The perception of internal bodily signals (interoception) is central to many theories of emotion and embodied cognition. According to recent theoretical views, the sensory processing of visceral signals such as one's own heartbeat is determined by top-down predictions about the expected interoceptive state of the body (interoceptive inference). In this EEG study we examined neural responses to heartbeats following expected and unexpected emotional stimuli. We used a modified stimulus repetition task in which pairs of facial expressions were presented with repeating or alternating emotional content, and we manipulated the emotional valence and the likelihood of stimulus repetition. We found that affective predictions of external socially relevant information modulated the heartbeat-evoked potential, a marker of cardiac interoception. Crucially, the HEP changes highly relied on the expected emotional content of the facial expression. Thus, expected negative faces led to a decreased HEP amplitude, whereas such an effect was not observed after an expected neutral face. These results suggest that valence-specific affective predictions, and their uniquely associated predicted bodily sensory state, can reduce or amplify cardiac interoceptive responses. In addition, the affective repetition effects were dependent on repetition probability, highlighting the influence of top-down exteroceptive predictions on interoception. Our results are in line with recent models of interoception supporting the idea that predicted bodily states influence sensory processing of salient external information.

ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
Radin (1990) found unusual effects on a RNG embedded in a computer system. A study by the author (2015) revealed unconscious PK effects on computers and electronics was reduced using relaxation techniques.
AIMS
This study explores whether the mood and emotion of a computer operator can produce errors in a network simulating a real-world working environment.
METHOD
130 participants completed normal computer tasks while a separate network system continuously monitored the network for errors. Experimental and control groups completed the same tasks, but the experimental group was obstructed with inoperative software designed to induce anxiety. Participants were motivated to complete the timed tasks quickly with rewards. Participants self-rated anxiety levels.
Custom network software logged errors and avoided automatic error correction. Participants were not aware of the network and did not interact with it, but those with higher anxiety were expected to produce more errors in the network.
Sessions were also run when no user was present. There were three categories of data: high anxiety sessions, lower anxiety sessions, and no user sessions. Errors were collected from the network for each group.
RESULTS & CONCLUSION
Evidence supported both hypotheses, but low effect size and power indicate additional sessions are necessary to confirm the hypotheses.
Sessions run with participants produced a higher mean number of errors than sessions without participants (p=.0345). Effect size: d=.134; power: .287.
Users who reported higher anxiety produced a higher mean number of errors than those who reported less anxiety (p<.0001). Effect size: d=.02; power: .062.

This study used a custom computer system designed to induce anxiety in participants and determine if people who are anxious produce more errors in an independent working computer network. Participants (N = 130) were asked to complete sixteen tasks on a computer in twenty minutes to receive a reward. Each participant self-rated their anxiety levels during the tasks. In addition, 130 sessions were run without a computer operator. The network ran independent of the tasks, and operated continuously during the sessions. The first hypothesis predicted sessions without operators would produce fewer network errors than sessions with operators, but it was not supported (p = 0.35). The second hypothesis predicted that anxious operators would produce more errors on the independent network than those less anxious. Initial analysis indicated an unsupported hypothesis, but the initial design did not properly identify anxious users. A post-hoc revised grouping based on actual reported anxiety resulted in this hypothesis being supported (p = 0.04, d = 0.45) indicating that anxious computer operators may affect network communication. There may be other electronic effects as a result of human emotions. Additional research is necessary to confirm these results and explore whether the intensity of emotions affects electronics.

ABSTRACT:
A customized computer system and network were designed to induce anxiety in a sample of computer operators while the network was monitored for errors. The study participants were asked to complete a series of simple computer tasks in a limited amount of time. Rewards were provided to increase motivation and potentially induce anxiety. Half of the participants were part of an experimental group where the software was designed to obstruct their ability to complete the tasks by presenting barriers to their progress. A control group completed the exact same tasks, but they were unencumbered in their sessions. Both groups self-rated their anxiety during the tasks before and after the sessions. During the sessions, unknown to the participants, a computer network continuously sent messages between two computers. The network was not associated with the software or tasks being performed, but the network was monitored for errors. Additional sessions were run when no computer operator was present as an additional no-operator control condition. Hypothesis 1 predicted that sessions with participants present would produce more errors than sessions with no operators, but results were not significant (p=0.353). Hypothesis 2 predicted that participants who experienced higher anxiety would produce more errors in the network than those with lower anxiety. The initial experimental and control groups did not correspond to the predicted grouping of anxious and non-anxious participants. The full sample was examined to produce two
groups based on the actually reported anxiety of the participants. The two groups that were created as a result of this regrouping, anxious group and non-anxious group, were examined for difference
in the number of errors recorded during their sessions. The group that reported higher anxiety produced more errors in the unmonitored network than the group that reported lower anxiety (p=0.038, d=0.45, power=0.61). These results indicate that anxious computer operators may affect network communication, and there may be other electronic effects as a result of their emotions. Though these results are exploratory and preliminary, the strength of these results indicates that businesses and organizations that use computer operators or provide technical support should be encouraged to consider the working environment and mood of their computer operators to avoid unintentional effects that could disrupt the network traffic and operation of computer systems.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The domestic dog (Canis familiaris) has been shown to both excel in recognising human emotions and produce emotion-related vocalisations and postures that humans can easily recognise. However, little is known about the effect of emotional experiences on subsequent sleep physiology, a set of phenomena heavily interrelated with emotions in the case of humans. The present paper examines heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) during dogs' sleep, measures that are influenced by both positive and negative emotions in awake dogs. In Study I, descriptive HR and HRV data is provided on N = 12 dogs about the different sleep stages (wake, drowsiness, non-rapid eye movement (non-REM), REM; scoring based on electroencephalogram (EEG) data). We conclude that wakefulness is characterised by higher HR and lower HRV compared to all sleep stages. Furthermore, drowsiness is characterised by higher HR and lower HRV than non-REM and REM, but only if the electrocardiogram (ECG) samples are taken from the first occurrence of a given sleep stage, not when the longest periods of each sleep stage are analysed. Non-REM and REM sleep were not found to be different from each other in either HR or HRV parameters. In Study II, sleep HR and HRV measures are compared in N = 16 dogs after a positive versus negative social interaction (within-subject design). The positive social interaction consisted of petting and ball play, while the negative social interaction was a mixture of separation, threatening approach and still face test. Results are consistent with the two-dimensional emotion hypothesis in that following the intense positive interaction more elevated HR and decreased HRV is found compared to the mildly negative (lower intensity) interaction. However, although this trend can be observed in all sleep stages except for REM, the results only reach significance in the wake stage. In sum, the present findings suggest that HR and HRV are possible to measure during dogs' sleep, and can potentially be used to study the effect of emotions not only during but also after such interactions.

BACKGROUND
Anecdotal reports suggest that PSI may be more apparent in young children, although there are few studies of age-related differences in PSI.
AIM OF THE STUDY
Our study investigated age-related differences in precognition and presentiment among children using a standardized laboratory test.
METHOD
Precognition and presentiment testing was performed for 120 children divided into three age groups, 3 to 6, 7 to 10, and 11 to 14 years of age. Each completed a computerized precognition task based on that distributed by Daryl Bem. Testing comprised 36 trials predicting the location of target images that elicted positive emotions or were non-emotional. Performance was determined as the percentage of correct predictions (hit rate).
RESULTS
All 120 participants, even the youngest, were able to complete the task as instructed. Comparisons of the three age group revealed significant differences in hit rate (F(2,117) = 3.11, p = .049), with the youngest performing best and the middle group worst (p = .01). Age-related differences were apparent for positive emotional images, but not for non-emotional images. Exploratory tests indicated that although performance was not better than chance in the full sample (N = 120), the young group did perform better than chance (p = .004) with a hit rate of 53.2%.
CONCLUSIONS
This pilot study demonstrated that computerized testing of precognition and presentiment is feasible in children across a broad age range. Results confirmed that age groups differed in performance, with the youngest group doing best. Further studies of age differences are warranted. A better understanding of PSI in children could be beneficial to both the fields of parapsychology and child development.

Past research on emotions was mostly supported on emotion inducing slides, but studies in the field are moving towards more ecological stimuli, including 3D stimuli and virtual reality scenes. The present study aims to compare the effects of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) emotion-inducing scenes in the modulation of attention, as indexed by the amplitude of the P3 event-related component in a dual-task paradigm. We recorded the EEG signal of 31 healthy male participants performing an active auditory oddball task, while simultaneously observing pleasant, unpleasant and neutral scenes in 2D or 3D. We analyzed the effects of emotional valence and visualization mode in the mean amplitude of the P3 component at Pz. The results revealed than revealed that 2D scenarios were as effective as 3D stimuli in capturing attention resources and this effect was consistently observed in all emotional scenes.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Observing someone speak automatically triggers cognitive and neural mechanisms required to produce speech, a phenomenon known as automatic imitation. Automatic imitation of speech can be measured using the Stimulus Response Compatibility (SRC) paradigm that shows facilitated response times (RTs) when responding to a prompt (e.g., say aa) in the presence of a congruent distracter (a video of someone saying aa), compared to responding in the presence of an incongruent distracter (a video of someone saying oo). Current models of the relation between emotion and cognitive control suggest that automatic imitation can be modulated by varying the stimulus-driven task aspects, i.e., the distracter’s emotional valence. It is unclear how the emotional state of the observer affects automatic imitation. The current study explored independent effects of emotional valence of the distracter (Stimulus-driven Dependence) and the observer’s emotional state (State Dependence) on automatic imitation of speech. Participants completed an SRC paradigm for visual speech stimuli. They produced a prompt superimposed over a neutral or emotional (happy or angry) distracter video. State Dependence was manipulated by asking participants to speak the prompt in a neutral or emotional (happy or angry) voice. Automatic imitation was facilitated for emotional prompts, but not for emotional distracters, thus implying a facilitating effect of State Dependence. The results are interpreted in the context of theories of automatic imitation and cognitive control, and we suggest that models of automatic imitation are to be modified to accommodate for state dependent and stimulus-driven dependent effects.

The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

BACKGROUND
The subjective experience of speech seems to be governed by predicting the sensory consequences of own voice (OV) production. However, existing studies fail to account for the effects of emotional salience in speech and how it affects prediction and prediction errors when what we hear is not what we intended.
AIMS
The current project investigated the effect of change in OV quality on sensory feedback to self-generated and externally generated vocalizations, combining EEG and fMRI.
METHOD
Twenty-six healthy participants vocalized the syllable “ah” with neutral, angry, and pleasure intonation. These vocalizations were morphed to generate neutral-to-angry and neutral-to-pleasure continua. In the EEG study, they listened to OV step wise changing from fully neutral to fully emotional via button-press (active) and listening (passive) conditions. In the fMRI study, participants heard the OV, an uncertain-voice (UV) and other-voice (OTV) in active and passive conditions.
RESULTS
N1 suppression was reduced in response to changes in OV that represented an increase in emotional quality. In the fMRI study, the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) displayed characteristic feedback-error processing: its activity increased as divergence from expected OV quality increased; the anterior superior temporal gyrus (STG) displayed characteristic motor-induced suppression of OV.
CONCLUSIONS
Sensory suppression to self-generated OV, reflected in N1 amplitude modulations, varies as a function of the perceived salience of auditory feedback that does not match the prediction, substantiating the link between emotion and sensory prediction.
Two different roles of error-monitoring and identity-attribution in OV perception were identified: IFG activity increases with more divergence from qualities of OV, whereas the STG is involved in self-attribution via motor-induced suppression of expected voice stimuli. Future studies should investigate if alterations in these processes are related to variability in hallucination predisposition.
