Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Continued investigations regarding the survival of consciousness beyond physical death are critical for our understanding of consciousness, the potential of the mind, and the nature of life in general. One of the main survival research methods involves studying mediums-individuals who report regular communication with the deceased. The current ongoing study addresses the research question at the heart of mediumship research: Can mediums report accurate and specific information about the deceased loved ones (termed discarnates) of living people (termed sitters) using anomalous information reception; that is, without any prior knowledge about the discarnates or sitters, in the absence of any feedback, and without using deceptive means? In order to control for all traditional, local, and sensory explanations for the accuracy of the mediums' statements (e.g., cold-reading, cueing, generality, rater bias, fraud), Windbridge Certified Research Mediums (WCRMs) answer specific questions about discarnates during readings performed under quintuple-blind conditions which involve the blinding of the mediums, the sitter-raters, and three experimenters interacting with the participants at various stages of the study. In addition, the WCRMs are not provided with feedback about the scores sitter-raters give the readings in order to address precognition as an explanation for positive results. The item-byitem
and whole reading scoring data collected to date as well as the implications of the findings regarding the relationship between the mind and the body will be discussed.

Mediumship research at the Windbridge Institute includes a three-tiered approach to investigations of secular, American mediums. The Information, Operation, and Application research programs examine (i) the accuracy of the information
mediums report; (ii) the mediums’ phenomenology, physiology, and psychology, and (iii) the potential social applications of mediumship readings, respectively. Studying mediums’ physiology as part of the Operation research program may help in predicting, preventing, and/or managing medical issues in mediums. An informal survey of the current team of Windbridge Certified Research Mediums (WCRMs) regarding their health issues demonstrated that chronic medical problems may be a serious concern for this population. For example, this sample has seven times the incidence of autoimmune disorders compared to the incidence in the general US population. Their incidence of diabetes is nearly twice the national prevalence. And the incidence of migraines in female WCRMs is nearly two and a half times the prevalence in women in the US. The current study aimed to systematically investigate the biological components of anomalous information reception (AIR; the reporting of accurate and specific information about the deceased in the absence of prior knowledge, feedback, or deceptive means) in this population of mediums by examining general physiological measures and 33 hematological elements during mediumship readings and a control task. Data collected to date do not demonstrate any significant changes in these measures when pre- and post-condition comparisons were made for the counter-balanced sessions. These preliminary results imply that the mediumship process itself may not be responsible for the increased health issues in this population. An alternative model addressing the relationships among childhood trauma, dissociation, and physical illness is proposed.

ABSTRACT:
Recent studies have shown that characteristics of the face contain a wealth of information about health, age and chronic clinical conditions. Such studies involve objective measurement of facial features correlated with historical health information. But some individuals also claim to be adept at gauging mortality based on a glance at a person’s photograph. To test this claim, we invited 12 such individuals to see if they could determine if a person was alive or dead based solely on a brief examination of facial photographs. All photos used in the experiment were transformed into a uniform gray scale and then counterbalanced across eight categories: gender, age, gaze direction, glasses, head position, smile, hair color, and image resolution. Participants examined 404 photographs displayed on a computer monitor, one photo at a time, each shown for a maximum of 8 s. Half of the individuals in the photos were deceased, and half were alive at the time the experiment was conducted. Participants were asked to press a button if they thought the person in a photo was living or deceased. Overall mean accuracy on this task was 53.8%, where 50% was expected by chance (p < 0.004, two-tail). Statistically significant accuracy was independently obtained in 5 of the 12 participants. We also collected 32-channel electrophysiological recordings and observed a robust difference between images of deceased individuals correctly vs. incorrectly classified in the early event related potential (ERP) at 100 ms post-stimulus onset. Our results support claims of individuals who report that some as-yet unknown features of the face predict mortality. The results are also compatible with claims about clairvoyance warrants further investigation.

CONTEXT
The examination of the accuracy and specificity of information reported by mediums addresses the existence of non-local information transfer.
OBJECTIVE
This study was designed to replicate and extend a previous methodology achieving positive findings regarding the anomalous reception of information about deceased individuals by research mediums under experimental conditions that eliminate conventional explanations, including cold reading, rater bias, experimenter cueing, and fraud.
DESIGN
Mediumship readings were performed over the phone under blinded conditions in which mediums, raters, and experimenters were all blinded.
PARTICIPANTS
A total of 20 Windbridge Certified Research Mediums WCRMs participated in 86 readings.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES
Accuracy and specificity were assessed through item scores, global reading scores, and forced-choice selections provided by blinded sitters.
RESULTS
(1) Comparisons between blinded target and decoy readings regarding the estimated percentage accuracy of reading items (n = 27, P = .05, d = 0.49), (2) comparisons regarding the calculated percentage accuracy of reading items (n = 31, P = .002, d = 0.75), (3) comparisons regarding hits vs. misses (n = 31, P < .0001 and P = .002 for different reading sections), (4) comparisons regarding global scores (n = 58, P = .001, d = 0.57), and (5) forced-choice reading selections between blinded target and decoy readings (n = 58, P = .01) successfully replicate and extend previous findings demonstrating the phenomenon of anomalous information reception (AIR), the reporting of accurate and specific information without prior knowledge, in the absence of sensory feedback, and without using deceptive means. Because the experimental conditions of this study eliminated normal, sensory sources for the information mediums report, a non-local source (however controversial) remains the most likely explanation for the accuracy and specificity of their statements.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Some individuals claim to be adept at gauging mortality based on a glance at a person’s photograph. To test this claim, we invited 12 such individuals to see if they could determine if a person was alive or dead based solely on a brief examination of photos of faces. All photos used in the experiment were transformed into a uniform gray scale and then counterbalanced across eight categories: gender, age, gaze direction, glasses, head position, smile, hair color, and image resolution. Participants examined 404 photographs displayed on a computer monitor, one photo at a time, each shown for a maximum of 8 seconds. Half of the individuals in the photos were deceased, and half were alive at the time the experiment was conducted. Participants were asked to press a button if they thought the person in a photo was alive or deceased. Overall mean accuracy on this task was 53.8%, where 50% was expected by chance (p < 0.004, two-tail). Statistically significant accuracy was independently obtained in 5 of the 12 participants. We also collected 32-channel electrophysiological recordings and observed a robust difference between images of deceased individuals correctly vs. incorrectly classified in the early event related potential at 100 ms post-stimulus onset. Our results support claims of individuals who report that some as-yet unknown features of the face predict mortality. The results are also compatible with claims about clairvoyance.

BACKGROUND
Numerous world cultures believe channeling provides genuine information, and channeling rituals in various forms are regularly conducted in both religious and non-religious contexts. Little is known about the physiological correlates of the subjective experience of channeling.
METHODS
We conducted a prospective within-subject design study with 13 healthy adult trance channels. Participants alternated between 5-minute blocks of channeling and no-channeling three times while electroencephalography (EEG), electrocardiography (ECG), galvanic skin response (GSR), and respiration were collected on two separate days. Voice recordings of the same story read in channeling and no-channeling states were also analyzed.
RESULTS
The pre-laboratory survey data about demographics, perception of the source, purpose and utility of channeled information reflected previous reports. Most participants were aware of their experience (rather than in a full trance) and had varying levels of perceived incorporation (i.e. control of their body). Voice analysis showed an increase in voice arousal and power (dB/Hz) differences in the 125 Hz bins between 0 and 625 Hz, and 3625 and 3875 Hz when reading during the channeling state versus control. Despite subjective perceptions of distinctly different states, no substantive differences were seen in EEG frequency power, ECG measures, GSR and respiration.
CONCLUSIONS
Voice parameters were different between channeling and no-channeling states using rigorous controlled methods, but other physiology measure collected were not. Considering the subjective and phenomenological differences observed, future studies should include other measures such as EEG connectivity analyses, fMRI and biomarkers.

Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

Ability of alleged mediums to assess mortality from facial photographs

ABSTRACT
Studies of characteristics of the human face indicate that it contains a wealth of information about health status. Most studies involve objective measurement of facial features as correlated with historical health information. But some individuals (labeled psychics or mediums) also claim to be adept at intuitively gauging mortality based solely upon a quick glance at a person’s photograph. To test this claim, we invited 12 such individuals to see if they could tell if a person was presently alive or dead based solely on a brief examination of his or her photograph. All photos used in the experiment were transformed into a uniform gray scale and counterbalanced across eight categories: gender, age, gaze direction, glasses, head position, smile, hair color, and image resolution. Participants examined 404 photographs displayed on a computer monitor, one at a time, with each shown for a maximum of 8 seconds. Half of the individuals in the photos were deceased, and half were alive at the time the experiment was conducted. Participants were asked to indicate if they thought the person in a photo was living or deceased by pressing an appropriate button. Overall mean accuracy on this task was 53.6%, where 50% was expected by chance (p = 0.005, two-tail), and statistically significant accuracy was independently obtained in 5 of the 12 participants. We also collected 32-channel electrocortical recordings and observed a robust difference in the early event-related potential at 100 ms post-stimulus onset between images of deceased individuals who were correctly vs. incorrectly classified. Then, to see if machine learning techniques could classify the photographs as good as or better than humans, both random forest and logistic regression machine learning approaches were used. Both classifiers failed to achieve accuracy above chance level. These results suggest that some individuals can intuitively assess mortality based on some as-yet-unknown features of the face. In this report, we also outline a
follow up experiment where we asked participants to classify the cause of death from photos of now-deceased individuals. Preliminary results on this experiment will be presented at the Parapsychological Convention.

Characteristics of English-Speaking Trance Channelers

Historical records suggest that channeling has existed globally, in a variety of cultures, for thousands of years, and recent research suggests that channeling is more prevalent than most people realize. The present study used an online survey to explore mental health factors, personality characteristics, subjective experiences and the impact of channeling on 83 participants who self-identified as trance channelers. Most participants endorsed being spiritual but not religious as adults, and on average the channeling experiences began at middle age. The majority of participants did not report pathological levels of dissociative or psychotic symptoms, anxiety or depression. Compared to relevant norms, participants reported similar scores on most personality factors, psychological absorption and empathy. Participants’ average scores on emotional and environmental sensitivity corresponded to being designated as sensory-processing sensitives. Participants reported high levels of noetic beliefs and experiences, particularly beliefs in life after death, non-local consciousness and telepathy. Most participants reported that their channeling process is willful and consensual, and that they are consciously aware of the channeling state while it occurs. The majority of participants also reported a positive impact of channeling on their lives. Lower psychotic symptoms, older age when the trance channeling experiences began, and higher sensitivity scores predicted a greater positive impact of trance on participants’ lives. Given that trance channeling has played a role in religious and spiritual traditions around the world throughout history, the present study provides an important exploration of the trance channeling phenomenon.
