PURPOSE:
We investigated functional reorganization mechanisms of the human medial temporal lobe (MTL) for episodic memory, in patients suffering from medial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) with hippocampal sclerosis (HS).
METHODS:
We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure brain activity changes during matched episodic encoding tasks of abstract words (Verbal) and line drawings (Visual), in patients with unilateral right MTLE undergoing presurgical evaluation and healthy controls.
RESULTS:
As expected, a significant interaction between material type and the side of MTL activity was present in the control group, with preferential involvement of the left hippocampus in verbal encoding and the right parahippocampal region in visual encoding. When compared with controls, right MTLE patients with intact performance activated a region in the left hippocampus more during visual encoding, which resulted in an interaction between group and hemisphere. Importantly, an effect of memory performance on visual encoding activity was observed in the patients, with greater engagement of the left MTL being associated with higher recognition scores. Interestingly, activity in the left MTL also depended on the epileptic seizure frequency, suggesting a role for this clinical parameter in the recruitment of contralateral regions.
DISCUSSION:
Taken together, these results indicate functional reorganization of the MTLs in right HS, through transfer of function from the right to the left hemisphere, and strongly suggest an adaptive role for such reorganization mechanism in supporting preserved visual memory.

OBJECTIVE:
The fornix is the major efferent pathway connecting the hippocampus with the diencephalon and the frontal lobe and it is regarded as a key link in the memory circuit comprising these structures. It remains a topic of debate whether this circuit supports a unique episodic memory system that can be dissociated from other memory systems. The objective of our study was to test the hypothesis of dissociable memory impairments following fornix damage.
PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS:
We have comprehensively investigated memory performance in a patient, J. T., with selective bilateral fornix damage resulting from neurosurgical cyst removal through a transcallosal approach. Standard neuropsychological assessment of all cognitive functions was performed approximately one year after surgery. Further assessment aimed at clarifying the memory impairments of the patient included a large number of both standard and experimental tests of recall and recognition memory, spatial memory and procedural memory.
RESULTS:
Standard neuropsychological tests revealed severe impairment in episodic memory recall, with relatively intact recognition memory, while all other cognitive functions were normal. The long-term episodic memory deficits were confirmed in all subsequent tests, while patient J.T. consistently showed normal recognition memory in the Warrington Recognition Memory Test (RMT) for faces, a Delayed Matching-to-Sample (DMS) test and a Visual Paired Comparison (VPC) test. Moreover, patient J.T. was severely impaired in an Object - Relocation spatial memory test, when involving object to location binding but not so for positions only memory conditions. Normal perceptual-motor skill learning was observed in two standard tasks, mirror tracing and rotary pursuit.
CONCLUSIONS:
In summary, our results support the hypothesis that the fornix is part of a memory circuit essential for recollection and recall but not familiarity processes. Our study further demonstrates spatial memory impairments and preserved procedural memory after fornix damage.

Growing evidence suggests that brain regions that process incoming sensory information can also be involved in the subsequent retrieval of that information from memory. Recent neuro-imaging studies have shown content-specific retrieval activity, corroborating this hypothesis. Mental-imagery experiments have also found that activation patterns are material-dependent. In particular, activation of primary visual cortex (V1) has been reported for visual-imagery tasks requiring examination of fine spatial features. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study the episodic encoding and subsequent retrieval of a set of line drawings and a set of words. The line drawings were composed of simple shapes with a complex abstract configuration and episodic encoding was achieved by asking subjects to perform angle comparisons. Group statistical analysis revealed stimulus-related and task-related activity in occipito temporal and parietal areas, which were used to functionally define regions of interest (ROIs). Contrast between activations induced by old versus new items during retrieval was found to be significant in areas within these ROIs, including retinotopic visual cortex extending as early as V1. No such modulation could be observed during retrieval of words. These results support the hypothesis of reinstatement upon retrieval of the perceptual activity engaged during episodic encoding. Most notably, they seem to suggest involvement of retinotopic visual areas during retrieval of line drawings, possibly because these cannot easily be categorised as objects and therefore require examination of fine spatial features. This observation is consistent with findings from visual-imagery experiments. Further studies with fine mapping of retinotopic and non-retinotopic areas should clarify the content specificity of the observed modulations. [Supported by FCT-POCTI/NSE/46438/2002]

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The performance of developing zebrafish in both classical and operant conditioning assays was tested with a particular focus on the emergence of these learning behaviors during development. Strategically positioned visual cues paired with electroshocks were used in two fully automated assays to investigate both learning paradigms. These allow the evaluation of the behavioral performance of zebrafish continuously throughout development, from larva to adult. We found that learning improves throughout development, starts reliably around week 3, and reaches adult performance levels at week 6. Adult fish quickly learned to perform perfectly, and the expression of the learned behavior is manifestly controlled by vision. The memory is behaviorally expressed in adults for at least 6 h and retrievable for at least 12 h.

Research on memory conformity shows that social remembering can influence people's memories. In fact,
our memory is not as accurate as we thought. There are several factors that can distort our memory: stimuli
association effects; interference; imagination; guessing processes; retrieval mechanisms; individual differences; and social constraints. In our study we decided to study social constrains, particularly, the influence of other’s testimony in our memory traces.
Our participants, young adults, were involved in a social influence procedure (based on Asch’s paradigm). In the encoding phase we presented a scene of a car accident and after a short retrieval interval the participants answered some questions about the scene they just viewed. The situation involved three participants each time (two of them were experimenters confederates and the other was a naïve participant). The naïve participant answered the questions related to the car accident scene after the other two, and the main experimental manipulation was that: for some of the questions the confederates gave answers that are clearly wrong (e.g., the colour of the cars was white but they answered pale yellow).
After one week the participant returned to the laboratory and individually filled a questionnaire about the scene previously seen – the retrieval phase.
Results showed that at the retrieval phase: (1) the conformist situation produces less accurate memory, that is, the capacity to recall details decreased; (2) the memory for the wrong answers done by the confederates produced a large interference on the participants memory; (3) subjects that believe to be more influenced by others are more susceptible to alter their memory traces.

OBJECTIVES:
The zebrafish (Danio rerio) has been an excellent vertebrate model for genetic analysis of early development and has also been used to study aspects of neural development and function. It is known that fish exhibit a wide range of learning behaviors but it is not clear at what point during development they begin nor have these behaviors been analyzed systematically. Before moving on to in vivo 2-photon imaging of neural circuitry, we are answering questions related to the ontogenesis of the learning and memory behaviors we assay for – When do animals start learning and how does that correlate to their developmental biology and age range? How does the ability to learn correlate with it’s persistence and extinction?
METHODS:
The performance of developing zebrafish in both classical and operant conditioning assays was tested with a particular focus on the emergence of these learning behaviors during development. Strategically positioned visual cues paired with electro- shocks were used in two fully automated assays to investigate both paradigms. These allow the evaluation of the behavioral performance of zebrafish continuously throughout development, from larva to adult.
RESULTS:
We found that learning improves throughout development, starts reliably around week 3, and reaches adult performance levels at week 6. Adult fish quickly learned to perform perfectly, and the expression of the learned behavior is manifestly controlled by vision. The memory is behaviorally expressed in adults for at least 6 h and retrievable for at least 12 h.
CONCLUSIONS:
We have developed a computer-based automated behavioral assay which we can easily control and comprehensively analyze. Using this automated system we show that a strong ability to learn is already present in young juvenile fish and we further characterize the ontogenesis of learning and memory during zebrafish development.
DISCUSSION:
The transparency and small size of the larva combined with its vertebrate brain organization, is an exceptional model. The barin areas equivalent to the amygdala and hippocampus are much more exposed to manipulation and imaging than in mammals and its amenability to genetic screening and manipulation tools provide a unique experimental system to explore the psychophysiology of learning and memory in future studies.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Contrary to expectations, schizotypy scores did not appear to influence memory accuracy or reaction time in either the location-based source task or the reality monitoring task. Differences were observed, however, in the event-related potential old/new effects as a function of schizotypy throughout the recording epoch (0-1900 ms post-stimulus). These differences were primarily evident when items had been presented in the auditory modality at study, and took the form of smaller old/new effects for the high schizotypes than for the low schizotypes. Early inspection of the ERP data also indicates that the scalp distributions of the old/new effects differ between the groups, suggesting that the neural generators of the old/new effects were at least partially non overlapping between the two groups. In addition, it was observed that the modulating effect of retrieval task-type upon the old/new effects also differed to some extent between the two groups. For example, low schizotypes showed larger old/new effects for the location-based source task than for the reality monitoring task between 800-1200 ms, whereas the reverse was true for the high schizotypes. In addition to these primary findings, our large data set also allowed us to observe other interactions of interest to the memory field in general; between 800-1900 ms, we observed that the modality of study items interacted with retrieval task type such that the old/new effects elicited during these epochs were modulated by study modality during the location-based source monitoring task but not during the reality monitoring task.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND:
We previously developed a novel method of identifying children aged 9-12 years who may be at elevated risk of developing schizophrenia and the spectrum disorders because they present a triad of putative antecedents of schizophrenia (ASz). The present study aimed to determine whether ASz children also present neurocognitive deficits that are commonly observed in patients with schizophrenia.
METHODS:
Twenty-eight ASz children and 28 typically-developing (TD) children without the antecedents of schizophrenia completed a battery of neurocognitive tests assessing seven domains of function: General intelligence, scholastic achievement, verbal memory, visual memory, working memory, executive function (EF)-verbal fluency, and EF-inhibition.
RESULTS:
Relative to TD children, the ASz group showed poorer performance on all neurocognitive tests (mean Cohen's d effect size=0.52). In linear regression analyses, group status (ASz vs. TD) significantly predicted scores on the general intelligence, verbal memory, working memory, and EF-inhibition domains (p<0.05). The severity of problems on each of the individual antecedents comprising the antecedent triad did not relate strongly to performance on the neurocognitive domains.
CONCLUSIONS:
Children aged 9-12 years who present multiple antecedents of schizophrenia display poorer neurocognition than healthy peers on several domains showing pronounced deficits in schizophrenia, first-episode psychosis, and youth with prodromal symptoms. Longitudinal follow-up is necessary to determine the extent to which poorer neurocognitive performance is specific to those who develop schizophrenia.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Implicit contextual learning refers to the ability to memorize contextual information from our environment. This contextual information can then be used to guide our attention to a specific location. Although the medial temporal lobe is important for this type of learning, the basal ganglia might also be involved considering its role in many implicit learning processes. In order to understand the role of the basal ganglia in this top-down process, a group of non-demented early-stage Parkinson's patients were tested with a contextual cueing task. In this visual search task, subjects have to quickly locate a target among a number of distractors. To test implicit contextual learning, some of the configurations are repeated during the experiment, resulting in faster responses. A significant interaction effect was found between Group and Configuration, indicating that the control subjects responded faster when the spatial context was repeated, whereas Parkinson's patients failed to do so. These results, showing that the contextual cueing effect was significantly different for the patients than for the controls, suggest an important role for the basal ganglia in implicit contextual learning, thus extending previous findings of medial temporal lobe involvement. The basal ganglia are therefore not only involved in implicit motor learning, but may also have a role in purely visual implicit learning.

Implicit contextual cuing refers to the ability to learn the association between contextual information of our environment and a specific target, which can be used to guide attention during visual search. It was recently suggested that the storage of a snapshot image of the local context of a target underlies implicit contextual cuing. To make such a snapshot, it is necessary to use peripheral vision. In order to test whether peripheral vision can underlie implicit contextual cuing, we used a covert visual search task, in which participants were required to indicate the orientation of a target stimulus while foveating a fixation cross. The response times were shorter when the configuration of the stimuli was repeated than when the configuration was new. Importantly, this effect was still found after 10 days, indicating that peripherally perceived spatial context information can be stored in memory for long periods of time. These results indicate that peripheral vision can be used to make a snapshot of the local context of a target.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
