Memory consolidation benefits from post-training sleep. However, recent studies suggest that sleep does not uniformly benefit all memory, but instead prioritizes information that is important to the individual. Here, we examined the effect of test expectation on memory consolidation across sleep and wakefulness. Following reports that information with strong “future relevance” is preferentially consolidated during sleep, we hypothesized that test expectation would enhance memory consolidation across a period of sleep, but not across wakefulness. To the contrary, we found that expectation of a future test enhanced memory for both spatial and motor learning, but that this effect was equivalent across both wake and sleep retention intervals. These observations differ from those of least two prior studies, and fail to support the hypothesis that the “future relevance” of learned material moderates its consolidation selectively during sleep.

It has been postulated that memories of near-death experiences (NDEs) could be (at least in part) reconstructions based on experiencers’ (NDErs) previous knowledge and could be built as a result of the individual’s attempt to interpret the confusing experience. From the point of view of the experiencer, NDE memories are perceived as being unrivalled memories due to its associated rich phenomenology. However, the scientific literature devoted to the cognitive functioning of NDErs in general, and their memory performance in particular, is rather limited. This study examined NDErs’ susceptibility to false memories using the Deese–Roediger–McDermott (DRM) paradigm. We included 20 NDErs who reported having had their experience in the context of a life-threatening event (Greyson NDE scale total score =7/32) and 20 volunteers (matched for age, gender, education level, and time since brain insult) who reported a life-threatening event but without a NDE. Both groups were presented with DRM lists for a recall task during which they were asked to assign “Remember/Know/Guess” judgements to any recalled response. In addition, they were later asked to complete a post-recall test designed to obtain estimates of activation and monitoring of critical lures. Results demonstrated that NDErs and volunteers were equally likely to produce false memories, but that NDErs recalled them more frequently associated with compelling illusory recollection. Of particular interest, analyses of activation and monitoring estimates suggest that NDErs and volunteers groups were equally likely to think of critical lures, but source monitoring was less successful in NDErs compared to volunteers.

Memories of Near-Death Experiences (NDEs) seem to be very detailed and stable over time. At present, there is still no satisfactory explanation for the NDEs’ rich phenomenology. Here we compared phenomenological characteristics of NDE memories with the reported experience’s intensity. We included 152 individuals with a self-reported “classical” NDE (i.e. occurring in life-threatening conditions). All participants completed a mailed questionnaire that included a measure of phenomenological characteristics of memories (the Memory Characteristics Questionnaire; MCQ) and a measure of NDE’s intensity (the Greyson NDE scale). Greyson NDE scale total score was positively correlated with MCQ total score, suggesting that participants who described more intense NDEs also reported more phenomenological memory characteristics of NDE. Using MCQ items, our study also showed that NDE’s intensity is associated in particular with sensory details, personal importance and reactivation frequency variables.

The exploration of the content of memories after coma

ABSTRACT:
After recovering from a coma, patients can sometimes report vivid perceptions and memories of their period on seemingly unconsciousness referred to as “Near-Death Experiences” (NDEs). In addition to the ill-described relation between the NDEs and the precipitating factors, the reliability of NDEs accounts remains controversial.
STUDY 1: We began by testing the hypothesis stating that that these memories could result from a blend between imagined and real events surrounding the period of unconsciousness. These memories could be comparable to an imagined event in terms of phenomenological characteristics. Using the Memory Characteristics Questionnaire and the Greyson NDE scale we compared NDE memories with other coma memories as well as real-life and imagined memories. Our results showed that NDEs memories contain more phenomenological content than any kind of memory of real and imagined events. NDEs cannot be considered as imagined events but seem rather seem to be unique and unrivaled, as described by experiencers.
STUDY 2: To date, no studies have tried to correlate the etiology of the possible brain damage with NDEs core features. Therefore, we aimed at assessing whether the cause of the context in which the NDE occurred (after a coma/life-threatening event versus a non-life-threatening event) would influence the reported NDE’s intensity and content. Our analyses failed to show any differences between groups for the context of occurrence. However, the overall NDE core features’ frequencies were higher in our retrospective anoxic cohort when compared to historical published prospective data suggesting that NDE reports might suffer from memory reconstructions.
STUDY 3: To further investigate the possible influence of the brain lesion site, we recruited a clear and medically documented cohort of locked-in syndrome (LIS) patients who reported NDEs after surviving a coma caused by brainstem lesion at the pontine level. The “LIS NDEs” group was compared to a group of “classical NDEs” that have occurred after supratentorial lesions. Interestingly, although memories of NDEs are classically recounted as emotionally positive events, it was one of the least reported features for the “LIS NDEs” group. They also had a tendency towards reporting greater life review and lesser joy. Lesser positive emotions and autobiographical memory flashbacks in the “LIS NDEs” could be linked to an altered connectivity in (para)limbic systems secondary to the acute pontine brainstem dysfunction.
STUDY 4: In parallel with the hypothesis stating that the strong belief or the awareness of being dead associated with an altered state of consciousness could suffice to trigger a NDE, we then aimed at exploring the brain metabolism of a patient who was convinced he was dead (patient with Cotard’s syndrome). Results identified hypometabolic regions in the “default mode network”, known to be critical for conscious self-awareness. These findings suggest that the significant modulation of thought and experience, revealed by Cotard’s delusion, reflects a profound disturbance in brain regions responsible for “core consciousness” and our abiding sense of self.
By bridging the data from psychology and neurology, this thesis work will be integrated for the enrichment of an explicative theory for the NDE phenomenon. To achieve a more rigorous definition and comprehension of the phenomenon, we propose to experimentally induce NDEs along with closely assess the experiencers’ subjective first-person phenomenal experience in parallel with state-of-the art brain monitoring in a controlled laboratory setting.

Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

BACKGROUND:
Among adults with schizophrenia, evidence suggests that premorbid deficits in different cognitive domains follow distinct developmental courses during childhood and adolescence. The aim of this study was to delineate trajectories of adolescent cognitive functions prospectively among different groups of youth at-risk for schizophrenia, relative to their typically developing (TD) peers.
METHOD:
Using linear mixed models adjusted for sex, ethnicity, parental occupation and practice effects, cognitive development between ages 9 and 16 years was compared for youth characterised by a triad of well-replicated developmental antecedents of schizophrenia (ASz; N = 32) and youth with a least one affected relative with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (FHx; N = 29), relative to TD youth (N = 45). Participants completed measures of IQ, scholastic achievement, memory and executive function at three time-points, separated by approximately 24-month intervals.
RESULTS:
Compared to TD youth, both ASz and FHx youth displayed stable developmental deficits in verbal working memory and inhibition/switching executive functions. ASz youth additionally presented with stable deficits in measures of vocabulary (IQ), word reading, numerical operations, and category fluency executive function, and a slower rate of growth (developmental lag) on spelling from 9 to 16 years than TD peers. Conversely, faster rates of growth relative to TD peers (developmental delay) were observed on visual and verbal memory, and on category fluency executive function (ASz youth only) and on matrix reasoning (IQ) and word reading (FHx youth only).
CONCLUSIONS:
These differential patterns of deviation from normative adolescent cognitive development among at-risk youth imply potential for cognitive rehabilitation targeting of specific cognitive deficits at different developmental phases.

Title: Final report - The impact of lipid signaling modulation in cognition

ABSTRACT:
Over the past years increasing amount of attention has been given to signaling lipids as well as to its modulating enzymes, such as phospholipases. Specifically, phospholipase D (PLD), that converts phosphatidylcholine to phosphatidic acid (PA), has been shown to exhibit a role in neurological development and physiology. Several studies have been associating PLD1 and PLD2, the two main mammalian PLD isozymes, to neurological processes, including neurotransmitter release, dendritic branching, cognition, and brain development. Also, the hippocampus has been suggested as one of the brain regions showing the highest PLD activity and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease associated pathways have been shown to be modulated by PLD signaling. Thus, the aim of this project was to better understand the potential role of PLD in hippocampal function in adult mice upon Pld1 or Pld2 genetic ablation.
We performed a hippocampal related behavioral characterization of these animals, a structural analysis regarding dendritic morphology, electrophysiology neuronal plasticity evaluation and protein and lipidomic biochemical detailed analysis.
Our behavioral data, specifically considering motor and exploratory activity, anxiety and memory, showed that PLD2 knockout mice behavior is not altered when compared to their wild type littermates. Although most of this was also observed in the animals lacking PLD1, the results indicate an object recognition-dependent short-term memory deficit. Regarding hippocampal dendritic arborization, the ablation of either PLD1 or PLD2 led to significant alterations in dendritic morphology, although with a different impact of each isozyme in the dorsal and ventral hippocampus. Concerning the electrophysiological plasticity analysis we observed a deficit in long-term depression in the dorsal hippocampus of PLD1 knock-out mice. Finally our biochemical analysis revealed a significant decrease in SNAP-25 protein levels and total levels of PA levels in PLD1 knock-out mice while no major changes were observed upon PLD2 genetic ablation.
Our results suggest that the separate ablation of PLD1 and PLD2 leads to different effects in the dorsal and ventral hippocampus, with a more significant effect upon PLD1 ablation.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).

ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
Near-Death Experiences (NDEs) refer to mental events with highly emotional and mystical aspects classically occurring in altered states of consciousness following a real or perceived life-threatening situation.
Aims: The aim of this project was to better characterize the NDE phenomenon and their experiencers though the integration of both a psychological and a neuropsychological approach. We conducted 7 studies aiming to investigate the NDE memory, 2 studies aiming to study the NDE experiencers’ personality and cognitive characteristics, and 3 studies aiming to investigate the neurobiological basis of the NDE phenomenon.
METHOD
Using qualitative (e.g. thematic analysis) and quantitative (e.g. natural language processing tool) analyses of hundreds of written narratives, we extracted common features, identified their order of appearance, and we compared them with experiences elicited by different types of psychoactive drugs. We also retrospectively assessed experiencers’ cognitive and personality variables, the phenomenological characteristics of the memory and assessed to what extent they are considered self-defining using validated questionnaires. Finally, we reproduced NDE-like features in controlled laboratory settings in ‘naïve’ healthy subjects and NDE experiencers by administrating DMT, medically-controlled vaso-vagal syncopes and using hypnosis, while performing high-density EEG monitoring to measure cerebral electrical changes.
RESULTS&CONCLUSIONS
NDE memories comprise recurrent time-bounded and transversal features with no prototypical sequences, and are associated with an important amount of phenomenological characteristics –correlated with the richness of the experience itself. Besides, they are self-defining, meaning that they are central to experiencers’ identities. A natural language processing tool enabled to identify, via semantic similarity, the long-standing link between certain drugs and NDEs. Indeed, the NMDA receptor antagonist ketamine consistently resulted in reports most similar to those associated with NDEs. Ketamine was followed by a series of serotonergic psychedelics (e.g. DMT) and could be used as a reversible experimental model for NDE phenomenology. In addition, our findings support the view that a particularly strong engagement in fantasy and a high illusory recollection susceptibility might make people more likely to report such experiences when exposed to suitable physiological and psychological conditions. Finally, we observed significant overlaps in nearly all of the NDE-like phenomenological features induced in controlled laboratory settings, compared with reports of ‘actual’ NDEs. These studies suggest that NDE features are brain-mediated events resulting from dynamic changes in the brain’s activity and connectivity.

In the first phase we tested the effects of different tES protocols in visuo-spatial contextual learning (VSCL).
The study comprised three sessions designed to evaluate tDCS-induced changes in VSCL measures collected during the execution of a visual search task widely used to examine statistical learning in the visuo-spatial domain. In Experiment1 (E1), we probed for the effects of left-posterior parietal cortex (PPC) anodal-tDCS (AtDCS) at different timings (offline and online) and intensities (3mA, 1.5mA). The protocol producing the more robust effect in E1 was used in E2 with a swapped electrodes montage, while In E3, left-PPC 3mA cathodal-tDCS (CtDCS) was applied offline and online to investigate the effects on neuronal excitability reduction on VSCL.
Results revealed that high intensity offline AtDCS reduced VSCL regardless of the stimulation side (E1 & 2), while no significant behavioural changes were produced by both online AtDCS protocols (E1) and offline/online CtDCS (E3). The reduced VSCL could result from homeostatic mechanisms produced by the interaction of two excitability-increasing events hindering normal task-related neuroplastic phenomena.
In the second phase of project, we examined the neurophysiological correlates of modified cognitive performance by 3mA anodal-tDCS offline on left-posterior parietal cortex (PPC).
We acquired various electrophysiological measures in order to fully investigate the neural modifications induced by the application of the tES protocol producing the more robust effect in the first phase of the project. Electrophysiological measures were recorded both during the execution of the behavioural task (ERP measures) and during TMS-EEG co-registration at three different intervals (before tDCS (TEP1), after tDCS but before task (TEP2) and after task (TEP3)).
ERPs revealed a significant difference in the amplitude of N1 and P3 and this modulation could be interpreted as a general memory-mediated attentional capture produced by visual contexts that were repeated over time. Interestingly, Real-tDCS also produced a strong significant increase in the amplitude of the posterior P2 component in response to both repeated and not-repeated visual contexts. This modulation could reflect a stimulation dependent reduction of perceived saliency associated with the presentation of the visual search arrays. TMS-evoked potentials show that the only application of tDCS does not produce changes in connectivity, but there is a different pattern between real and sham conditions when participants are also asked to perform a cognitive task and it improves with time. Furthermore, the difference between TEP 1 and TEP 3 in sham condition, and not in the real one, suggests a reduction of cortical activation after real stimulation.

The embodied cognition approach to linguistic meaning posits that action language understanding is grounded in sensory–motor systems. However, evidence that the human motor cortex is necessary for action language memory is meager. To address this issue, in two groups of healthy individuals, we perturbed the left primary motor cortex (M1) by means of either anodal or cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), before participants had to memorize lists of manual action and attentional sentences. In each group, participants received sham and active tDCS in two separate sessions. Following anodal tDCS (a-tDCS), participants improved the recall of action sentences compared with sham tDCS. No similar effects were detected following cathodal tDCS (c-tDCS). Both a-tDCS and c-tDCS induced variable changes in motor excitability, as measured by motor-evoked potentials induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation. Remarkably, across groups, action-specific memory improvements were positively predicted by changes in motor excitability. We provide evidence that excitatory modulation of the motor cortex selectively improves performance in a task requiring comprehension and memory of action sentences. These findings indicate that M1 is necessary for accurate processing of linguistic meanings and thus provide causal evidence that high-order cognitive functions are grounded in the human motor system.

The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Abnormal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function, as indexed by elevated diurnal cortisol levels and/or a blunted cortisol awakening response (CAR), has been observed among patients with first episode psychosis and associated with neurocognitive deficits in this population. However, the extent to which these features precede illness onset is unclear. The current study aimed to determine whether children who are at putatively elevated risk for psychosis because they present multiple antecedents of schizophrenia (ASz), and high-risk children with a family history of illness (FHx), are characterized by abnormal cortisol levels when compared with their typically developing (TD) peers. A further aim was to investigate the extent to which cortisol levels are associated with psychosocial stress and neurocognitive function. Thirty-three ASz children, 22 FHx children, and 40 TD children were identified at age 9-12 years using a novel community-based screening procedure or as relatives of individuals with schizophrenia. All participants were antipsychotic-naive and not currently seeking treatment for their symptoms. At age 11-14 years, participants provided salivary cortisol samples and completed psychosocial stress measures and tests of memory and executive function. Results indicated that FHx children, but not ASz children, were characterized by a blunted CAR relative to their TD peers (effect size = -0.73, p = 0.01) that was not explained by psychosocial stress exposure or by distress relating to these experiences. Neither FHx nor ASz children were characterized by elevated diurnal cortisol. Among both FHx and ASz children, more pronounced HPA axis function abnormalities (i.e., higher diurnal cortisol levels and greater blunting of the CAR) were associated with poorer performance on tests of verbal memory and executive function. These findings support the notion that at least some HPA axis abnormalities described in psychosis precede illness onset, rather than being a subsequent epiphenomenon. We speculate that the blunted CAR may constitute an early (potentially genetically mediated) marker of psychosis vulnerability, whilst elevated diurnal cortisol levels may emerge only proximally to disease onset.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Exposure to chronic stress during the neonatal period is known to induce permanent long-term changes in the central nervous system and hipothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis reactivity that are associated with increased levels of depression, anxiety, and cognitive impairments. In rodents, a validated model of early life stress is the maternal separation (MS) paradigm, which has been shown to have long-term consequences for the pups that span to adulthood. We hypothesized that the early life stress-associated effects could be exacerbated with aging, because it is often accompanied by cognitive decline. Using a MS model in which rat pups were separated from their mothers for 3 hours daily, during postnatal days 2-14, we evaluated the long-term functional consequences to aged animals (70-week-old), by measuring synaptic plasticity and cognitive performance. The baseline behavioral deficits of aged control rats were further exacerbated in MS animals, indicating that early-life stress induces sustained changes in anxiety-like behavior and hippocampal-dependent memory that are maintained much later in life. We then investigated whether these differences are linked to impaired function of hippocampal neurons by recording hippocampal long-term potentiation from Schaffer collaterals/CA1 synapses. The magnitude of the hippocampal long-term potentiation induced by high-frequency stimulation was significantly lower in aged MS animals than in age-matched controls. These results substantiate the hypothesis that the neuronal and endocrine alterations induced by early-life stress are long lasting, and are able to exacerbate the mild age-associated deficits.

The transcription factor activating protein two gamma (AP2?) is an important regulator of neurogenesis both during embryonic development as well as in the postnatal brain, but its role for neurophysiology and behavior at distinct postnatal periods is still unclear. In this work, we explored the neurogenic, behavioral, and functional impact of a constitutive and heterozygous AP2? deletion in mice from early postnatal development until adulthood. AP2? deficiency promotes downregulation of hippocampal glutamatergic neurogenesis, altering the ontogeny of emotional and memory behaviors associated with hippocampus formation. The impairments induced by AP2? constitutive deletion since early development leads to an anxious-like phenotype and memory impairments as early as the juvenile phase. These behavioral impairments either persist from the juvenile phase to adulthood or emerge in adult mice with deficits in behavioral flexibility and object location recognition. Collectively, we observed a progressive and cumulative impact of constitutive AP2? deficiency on the hippocampal glutamatergic neurogenic process, as well as alterations on limbic-cortical connectivity, together with functional behavioral impairments. The results herein presented demonstrate the modulatory role exerted by the AP2? transcription factor and the relevance of hippocampal neurogenesis in the development of emotional states and memory processes.

The transcription factor activating protein two gamma (AP2?) is an important regulator of neurogenesis both during embryonic development as well as in the postnatal brain, but its role for neurophysiology and behavior at distinct postnatal periods is still unclear. In this work, we explored the neurogenic, behavioral, and functional impact of a constitutive and heterozygous AP2? deletion in mice from early postnatal development until adulthood. AP2? deficiency promotes downregulation of hippocampal glutamatergic neurogenesis, altering the ontogeny of emotional and memory behaviors associated with hippocampus formation. The impairments induced by AP2? constitutive deletion since early development leads to an anxious-like phenotype and memory impairments as early as the juvenile phase. These behavioral impairments either persist from the juvenile phase to adulthood or emerge in adult mice with deficits in behavioral flexibility and object location recognition. Collectively, we observed a progressive and cumulative impact of constitutive AP2? deficiency on the hippocampal glutamatergic neurogenic process, as well as alterations on limbic-cortical connectivity, together with functional behavioral impairments. The results herein presented demonstrate the modulatory role exerted by the AP2? transcription factor and the relevance of hippocampal neurogenesis in the development of emotional states and memory processes.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Dissociable impairments of verbal learning differentiate childhood risk profiles for schizophrenia

Poor verbal learning and memory function is well-documented among individuals with schizophrenia and those at clinical high-risk for psychosis. This study aimed to identify these impairments among children aged 9–12 years with different schizophrenia risk profiles (family history or antecedents of schizophrenia, each of higher[H] or lower[L] risk load) relative to typically developing peers. These three groups were recruited via community-screening, and differentiated for analysis into: typically developing children (TD = 45); children who had 1 first- or =2 second-degree affected relatives (FHxH = 16) or one second-degree relative (FHxL = 15); and children presenting multiple replicated antecedents of schizophrenia whose clinical symptoms persisted at 2- and/or 4-year follow-up (ASzH = 16) or remitted during follow-up (ASzL = 16). Verbal learning/memory measures assessed at baseline (age 9–12 years) included: (i) total recall; (ii) trial 1 recall; (iii) learning score; (iv) intrusions; (v) total words lost; and (vi) serial position patterns. Analyses of variance indicated that FHxH and ASzH youth demonstrated impaired total recall compared to TD and ASzL children and lost significantly more words between trials than TD and FHxL children. Learning score was impaired among both FHxH and FHxL relative to TD and ASzL children. Thus, among putatively at-risk children, total words recalled and lost distinguished those with higher risk load (by family history or persistent antecedent symptomology), whereas learning score indexed familial vulnerability. Follow-up of the sample is needed to determine the capacity of verbal learning deficits to predict later illness and provide a potential avenue for early remediation to improve clinical or functional outcomes.
