Abstract/Results: Memory for time is influenced by reconstructive processes, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The present study investigated whether the effect of schematic prior knowledge on temporal memory for movie scenes, produced by the incomplete presentation (cut) of the movie at encoding, is modulated by cut position, retention interval, and task repetition. In a timeline positioning task, participants were asked to indicate when short video clips extracted from a previously encoded movie occurred on a horizontal timeline that represented the video duration. In line with previous findings, removing the final part of the movie resulted in a systematic underestimation of clips' position as a function of their proximity to the missing part. Further experiments demonstrate that the direction of this automatic effect depends on which part of the movie is deleted from the encoding session, consistent with the inferential structure of the schema, and does not depend on consolidation nor reconsolidation processes, at least within the present experimental conditions. We propose that the observed bias depends on the automatic influence of reconstructive processes on judgments about the time of occurrence, based on prior schematic knowledge.

ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
Circadian disruption impacts on cognition as seen in shift-work and manipulation of sleep-wake cycles in humans and rats. However, the functional interactions between Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN) and memory-related regions, such as the Hippocampus (HIPP), have never been defined.
AIMS
We aimed at characterizating the structural connectivity between the SCN and the hippocampus durinh a circadian shift protocol METHOD
Whole-brain functional connectivity was modeled by combining 14C-2-deoxyglucose functional imaging and PLS Regression (Dawson et al, 2014) on male rats (13 week-old) under a normal circadian cycle or after 4 cycles of repeated phase shifts and recovery sessions (Craig et al, 2008).
RESULTS
Upon analysis of 67 brain regions, we found alterations in the metabolic activity of SCN and the HIPP, Medial Entorhinal Cortex (MEC), Perirhinal Cortex and Dorsal Raphe´ (DR). We then modeled the relationship between the activity of these seed regions and the remainder regions measured. A total of 127 functional connectivity interactions were impacted by the circadian shift, particularly a hypofunction of the MEC and related projections, and a hyperconnection of the DR and associated pathways.
Moreover, the shifted animals displayed a reduced performance in the Novel Object Recognition and Pattern Separation Task, whereas the performances in the Morris Water Maze and the Y-maze were preserved.
Relevant anatomical projections were traced by resorting to transsynaptic antero- and retrograde viral vectors, between the SCN and the HIPP, that revealed the Septum as a putative hub of circadian information onto the HIPP.
CONCLUSIONS
Altogether, these connectivity patterns suggest that circadian disturbance may induce adaptive mechanisms to preserve cognitive performance upon circadian insult.

ABSTRACT:
Background
When looking at visual images, the eyes move to the most salient and behaviourally relevant objects. Saliency and semantic information significantly explain where people look. Less is known about the role of intrinsic brain dynamics in shaping oculomotor behaviour and about the link between eye movements and memory recall.
Aims
We aimed to study the link between eye movement dynamics during free-viewing, subsequent memory recall of visual stimuli, and intrinsic brain dynamics measured with high density EEG.
Method
We pursued such aims through three experiments. In Experiment 1 we collected eye-movements while participants were freely viewing a set of images, a subset of which was subsequently recalled. In Experiment 2 we collected high-density EEG (hdEEG) data during resting-state in observers with different spontaneous viewing styles. In Experiment 3 we collected simultaneous eye-tracking and hdEEG data during image-viewing. As an extension of the project, we applied the same approach on eye movements of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) patients.
Results
We identified spontaneous visual exploration styles in free-viewing which relate to stable properties of resting-state brain dynamics. We also identified subtle oculomotor alterations in AD. We are currently investigating the relationship between eye-movements and online brain activity to identify oculomotor markers of altered brain dynamics.
Conclusions
Overall, this project supported the hypothesis that intrinsic brain dynamics have a role in shaping oculomotor behaviour in free-viewing. The investigation of the link between oculomotor behaviour and intrinsic brain processes can help the identification of oculomotor markers of neurodegenerative pathologies such as AD.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Background: It is not rare that intensive care unit (ICU) patients report unusual subjective experiences, ranging from a feeling of harmony with the environment to complex phenomena such as near-death experience (NDE). This 1-year follow-up study investigates the characteristics and potential global impact of the NDE memories recalled by ICU survivors.
Method: We prospectively enrolled 126 adult survivors of a prolonged (>7days) ICU stay (all etiologies), including 19 (15 %) who reported a NDE as identified by the Greyson NDE scale. The NDE group underwent a semi-structured interview one month later evaluating their memory characteristics and the associated lifethreatening
situation. One year after inclusion, all patients (regardless of whether they recalled an NDE) were contacted for a follow-up Greyson NDE scale assessment and questions about their ICU experience and opinions
on death since discharge.
Results: The Greyson NDE scale revealed that the most frequently reported features were altered time perception, heightened senses and life review, and the Greyson total scores did not evolve over time. NDE memories persisted, with a consequent number of phenomenological characteristics (e.g., visual details, emotions). One year post-ICU, two patients (18 %) of the NDE group and 12 (24 %) of the non-NDE group were less afraid of death.
Conclusions: Results emphasize the clinical importance of interviewing all ICU patients to explore any memory after an ICU stay.

Objective: Academic investigation of thousands of children who claim past-life memories has been developed worldwide for five decades. However, despite the scientific and clinical significance of this substantial body of research, most clinicians and scientists are not aware of it. This study aims to report a case of a child who claimed memories that match his deceased granduncle's life and to perform a literature review of the main characteristics and implications of children's past-life claims. Method: We investigated the case through interviews with the child and first-hand witnesses, and conducted a documental analysis to verify possible associations between the child's statements and facts from the deceased's life. We also performed a CT scan of the child's skull to verify possible associations between anatomical features and a fatal wound from the alleged previous life. Results: The child presented most key features typical of such cases of claimed past-life memories. He made 13 statements about the previous life; nine were correct (e.g., the mode of death and a toy the granduncle had) and four were undetermined. The child demonstrated eight unusual behaviors that matched the previous personalitys habits, interests, and manners. The child has a birth defect (a rare occipital concavity) that is compatible with the firearm injury that caused the death of his uncle. Conclusions: The characteristics of the reported case fit the cross-cultural patterns of children who claim past-life memories, and it has scientific and clinical implications that need to be better known and investigated.

Dreams have long captivated human curiosity, but empirical research in this area has faced significant methodological challenges. Recent interdisciplinary advances have now opened up new opportunities for studying dreams. This review synthesizes these advances into three methodological frameworks and describes how they overcome historical barriers in dream research. First, with observable dreaming, neural decoding and real-time reporting offer more direct measures of dream content. Second, with dream engineering, targeted stimulation and lucidity provide routes to experimentally manipulate dream content. Third, with computational dream analysis, the generation and exploration of large dream-report databases offer powerful avenues to identify patterns in dream content. By enabling researchers to systematically observe, engineer, and analyze dreams, these innovations herald a new era in dream science.

Offline memory consolidation during waking rest

People spend approximately half of their waking hours in a so-called offline state - daydreaming, mind wandering or otherwise inattentive to their surroundings. These activities are often viewed as a waste of time, perhaps as moments of lost productivity. However, periods of offline waking rest can facilitate the consolidation of newly formed memories. Even a few minutes of rest with closed eyes can improve memory, perhaps to the same degree as a full night of sleep. These findings have profound implications for understanding the memory consolidation process, its time course and its underlying mechanisms. In this Review, I describe evidence that offline waking rest retroactively facilitates memory. Similar to the beneficial effect of sleep, the effect of rest might be driven by neural-level reactivation of newly formed memory traces. As both rest and sleep seem to support consolidation, I next consider whether these two states support the same or dissociable stages of consolidation. Then I review evidence that seconds-long bouts of offline rest occur throughout the day and that even these ultrashort offline periods might benefit memory. Finally, I conclude by describing future directions for research into the underlying processes of sleep and wake states.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.

Within-subject comparison of near-death and psychedelic experiences: acute and enduring effects

Mystical-like states of consciousness may arise through means such as psychedelic substances, but may also occur unexpectedly during near-death experiences (NDEs). So far, research studies comparing experiences induced by serotonergic psychedelics and NDEs, along with their enduring effects, have employed between-subject designs, limiting direct comparisons. We present results from an online survey exploring the phenomenology, attribution of reality, psychological insights, and enduring effects of NDEs and psychedelic experiences (PEs) in individuals who have experienced both at some point during their lifetime. We used frequentist and Bayesian analyses to determine significant differences and overlaps (evidence for null hypotheses) between the two. Thirty-one adults reported having experienced both an NDE (i.e. NDE-C scale total score =27/80) and a PE (intake of lysergic acid diethylamide, psilocybin/mushrooms, ayahuasca, N,N-dimethyltryptamine, or mescaline). Results revealed areas of overlap between both experiences for phenomenology, attribution of reality, psychological insights, and enduring effects. A finer-grained analysis of the phenomenology revealed a significant overlap in mystical-like effects, while low-level phenomena (sensory effects) were significantly different, with NDEs displaying higher scores of disembodiment and PEs higher scores of visual imagery. This suggests psychedelics as a useful model for studying mystical-like effects induced by NDEs, while highlighting distinctions in sensory experiences.
