Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of the data identified four main clusters of themes across the five studies. One cluster concerned the potential for the OBE to be viewed as an adaptive experience; occurring at times of personal significance and helping individuals cope with difficult life events. A second cluster highlighted the benefits and challenges that experients encountered when sharing their OBEs with other people as part of their sense-making endeavours. A third cluster of themes centred on the embodied nature of the OBE and the attributions and beliefs experients had about the perceived control and mastery they had over their OBEs. Also identified in this theme was the transactive nature of the out-of-body environments themselves, which were seen as meaningful places that facilitated experients’ embodied, goal-oriented behaviours. The fourth cluster focused on the abundance of rarely discussed OBE features and the corresponding attribution experients made of some kind of meaning to certain features, many of which were bound to previously held desires and beliefs, and tied in closely with their future anticipations and expectations. The theoretical implications for all of these findings are discussed.

ABSTRACT:
A variety of anomalous experiences have been reported in the research literature as enhancing, rather than indicating poor mental health. The out-of-body experience (OBE), where the person‘s self and body are phenomenologically separate, is a relatively common anomalous experience. The aim of this study was to investigate the experience of an OBE and its resultant after-effects. Three participants took part in recorded face-to-face, semi-structured interviews. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis found experients perceived their OBEs as occurring at times of personal significance. They were inextricably linked with participants‘ lives beyond their point of occurrence and played an adaptive role in response to difficult life events. The process of integration was helped or hindered by the varying reactions from others to the disclosure of the OBE. The idiographic nature of this study was instrumental in highlighting the subtle personal and social factors that influenced how the OBE was managed and integrated.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The out-of-body experience (OBE) is an anomalous experience that has been found to occur under a variety of circumstances. This article takes its focus the in-depth examination of the lived experience of having an OBE as described by two novice meditators. A qualitative approach was adopted using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Two female participants who had OBEs while meditating took part in face-to-face, semi-structured interviews. Three interrelated themes emerged from the findings.
Analysis highlighted the potential for the OBE to function as an adaptive psychological response in relation to how participants endeavoured to discharge existing need-related conflicts. Also emergent was the transactive nature of the out-of-body environments themselves, which were seen as meaningful places that facilitated participants’ embodied, goal-oriented behaviours. Accordingly, participants took pragmatic views about their OBEs, seeing them more as tools or skills that can be utilised as an extension of their selves. Also emphasised was the role of absorption in the production of both the participants’ meditative and out-of-body states.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Much contemporary research on anomalous experiences has been focused on issues of confirming the authenticity of the phenomena, or to determine the underlying processes by which these phenomena may manifest themselves. This research has largely been nomothetic in nature relying mainly on laboratory experiments and/or questionnaire surveys. Traditionally, however, there has existed a third strand of exploration in this field of study–phenomenological research—which in recent times has been somewhat overlooked in this field of work. In an attempt to redress this shortcoming, the authors propose the use of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to research anomalous experience. IPA possesses strong theoretical and philosophical underpinnings and a focus on describing and interpreting the process, intricacy and novelty of personal experience. The authors argue that IPA appears ideally suited as a method of qualitative investigation to address important fundamental research questions posed by the study of anomalous experiences.

In recent years there has been a surge of scientific interest in the related phenomena of out-of-body (OBEs) and near-death experiences (NDEs). These experiences are altered states of consciousness in which the person may feel that their consciousness has become separated from the confines of their physical bodies. They may occur at mundane times, such as when on the verge of going to or waking from sleep, or at times of increased stress, such as during potentially life-threatening situations, or even when having been clinically dead and revived. These experiences have similar, recurring phenomenological features and cultural motifs. Both forms of experience may be characterized by lucid thinking, a belief that such experiences are 'real' or veridical, and may involve the observance of the physical body, others and the surrounding environment from a disembodied point of view. Both OBEs and NDEs may be accompanied by profound personality changes. the NDE in particular, which is characterized by seemingly real encounters with spiritual beings and deceased persons, being interpreted by those having the experiences as a spiritual one which leads to changes in their world view. Since past research, there has been growing academic interest over the years to help explain the mechanism for and content of these experiences. This book brings together the most up-to-date research within the psychological sciences on these topics in one authoritative, accessible text. From developments in understanding brain function to research methodologies which probe the phenomenological depths of these experience, this book offers a timely summary of the work of leading experts on these phenomena.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.

The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.

The OBE, where the person’s self and body are phenomenologically separate, is a relatively common phenomenon. Previous research has been conducted using laboratory experiments, questionnaire surveys, and interviews. Each of these methods has had its own particular focus within the topic area itself. For instance, experimental techniques have been mainly used to investigate the veridicality of the OBE, whereas questionnaire studies have attempted to build a ‘profile’ of the experients in order to describe their personality, or in many cases, to predict what kind of personality would be most likely to have an OBE. These two approaches have been almost exclusively quantitative in nature, with the resultant criticism being that they have taken a largely ‘top-down’ approach and researchers have failed to take a more bottom-up approach, in which the experiences of OBErs are first elicited in detail before forming testable hypotheses which would provide the best psychological insight into the phenomenon. Where interviews have been conducted, the research has largely focused on examining the features of the OBE, for example, describing which physical sensations a person may feel at the onset of the experience, or cataloguing the diversity of after-effects the experient may undergo post-OBE. Regarding the issue of after-effects, some researchers have been critical of the lack of systematic work done to elicit the impact the OBE has on the experient. In so doing, research in this area has paid little consideration to the everyday relevance or significance of the experience to the person having it. Therefore, the aims of this study were to investigate the lived psychological experience of having an OBE in relation to the after-effects experienced by people who have them, the nature of those after-effects, and the temporal, social and psychological factors that may impinge on the post-experience integration process. In order to facilitate this, an idiographic qualitative approach was taken. Three participants took part in face-to-face, semi-structured interviews. All interviews were audio recorded and transcribed prior to analysis. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used to analyse the data. Four themes emerged; barriers to sharing the experience, facilitators to sharing the experience, the positive effects of OBEs, and the OBE within a biographical context. The findings from this study show that despite their ostensibly paranormal nature, OBEs are perceived by their experients as naturally occurring, seemingly normal events that can often arise at times of great significance in a person’s life. From thereon the OBE is inextricably linked with the experient’s everyday life living, and reference to them can offer additional, alternative ways of coping with difficult, stressful or even tragic life events and situations. This presentation will highlight the advantages and disadvantages of the idiographic approach with this sample. In particular, it will be argued that, contrary to some calls for ‘naturalistic’ data collection which view the interview as producing artificial data, information obtained in the context of interview can have real-world relevance.

Alterations of consciousness are critical factors in the diagnosis of epilepsy and seizure disorders. With this alteration in consciousness, some persons report unusual experiences that resemble mystical experience. This study identified and characterized the subjective experiences associated with seizure activity, using standardized quantitative instruments.
More than half the patients in this study recalled some subjective experience in association with their seizures, but none of their descriptions met criteria for mystical experience or for near-death experience. Those few features of mystical or near-death experience that were reported were not associated primarily with temporal lobe function, nor with the right or left side of the brain. Among 100 patients, 7 reported out-of-body experiences associated with their seizures. There were no differentiating traits associated with reports of out-of-body experience, in terms of either demographics, medical history including seizure risk factors and precipitants, seizure characteristics including localization and type of seizure, or neuropsychological functioning including ability to recall subjective experiences associated with their seizures.

OBJECTIVES:
Out-of-body experiences (OBEs) have been explored in terms of their relationship to absorption, body image, dissociation, dreams, fantasy proneness, imagery, schizotypy, openness to experience, parapsychological experiences, and alterations of consciousness. Because literature reviews have also suggested a relationship between OBEs and depersonalization, our objective was to explore this further.
METHODS:
We conducted a random postal survey (S1) and an open web-based survey (S2). Respondents completed the Cambridge Depersonalisation Scale (CDS), the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) and demographic, medical, dream, synesthesia-like and parapsychological (psi) experience items. Some also completed the Launay Slade Hallucination Scale (LSHS) and/or an OBE phenomenology instrument that resulted in an OBE Feature Index (OFI) and an OBE Transformation Score (OTS). Compared both within and between studies overall, for OBErs vs non-OBErs, and for low vs high CDS scorers: psychological scale scores; specific CDS item scores; OFI and OTS; presence/absence and frequency of medical, dream, mystical, synesthesia-like, and psi experiences.
RESULTS:
In S1 256 persons responded, 63% female and 38% male (Age R=17-95, M=49.3, SD=18.7). In S2 589 persons responded, 65% female and 35% male (Age R=13-84, M=45.3, SD=14.2). CDS Scores in S1 and S2 were significantly and positively correlated to all psi, mystical and déjà vu experiences, LSHS scores, lucid and disturbing dreams. CDS scores correlated significantly but negatively to SWLS scores in S1 (rs=-.59). In S1 and S2 positive significant relationships were found between CDS scores and OBEs. In S1 (N=11), high and low CDS scorers did not differ on the OFI or on specific OBE features, while in S2 (N=61) the feature “looking down while out of the body” was significantly different. In S1 and S2 we found significant positive relationships between OBEs and synesthesia, headaches and head injury. In S1 and S2, OBE frequency correlated significantly and positively with psi experiences, dreams, déjà vu, and mysticism. In S2, OBE frequency also correlated positively with LSHS scores. Claims and frequency of all experiences, CDS and LSHS scores, and the OTS were significantly higher for respondents in S2 than in S1. Results of both our studies replicated comparable previous findings.

OBJECTIVES:
To elicit in-depth phenomenological detail regarding the lived experience of having either an OBE arising under a variety of circumstances or an NDE; To expand upon current psychological theories of OBEs/NDEs;
METHODS:
Fifteen participants took part in face-to-face, semi-structured interviews. The sample comprised of experients with a variety of OBEs (sleep-related (n=3), whilst feeling physically/psychologically threatened (n=3), meditatively achieved (n=3), and whilst under the influence of drugs or alcohol (n=3)) and those who had an NDE (n=3). Data were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA).
RESULTS:
Findings from three of the above groups of interviews are presented: Sleep related OBEs: Participants’ OBEs were found to play an adaptive role in response to difficult life events. The process of integration was helped or hindered by the varying reactions from others to the disclosure of the OBE.
Meditative OBEs: Analysis highlighted the potential for the OBE to function as an adaptive psychological response related to participants’ efforts to discharge existing need-related conflicts. Also emergent was the transactive nature of the out-of-body environments themselves, which were seen as meaningful places that facilitated participants’ embodied, goal-oriented behaviours.
NDEs: Rather than being an overall influence on personal and spiritual growth, participants chose elements of their NDE which were most personally meaningful for them to take into their later lives. Also evident were the challenges the NDE, or elements therein, have on the individual’s sense of self and how they maintain and develop that self in the years succeeding the event.
CONCLUSIONS:
The idiographic nature of this work highlighted the personal, social and environmental mediating factors that influenced how the OBE/NDE was managed and integrated. In addition, concomitant physical and psychological events can also intertwine in vastly complex ways, which may aid or hinder the individual’s resolution of the underlying meaning of the event.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
New findings from this project have shown that specific neurocognitive biases do appear to underlie certain anomalous bodily experiences (e.g., the out-of-body experience: OBE). The OBE groups showed distinct profiles on measures of; (i) embodied and disembodied perspective-taking; (ii) measures of cortical hyperexcitability; (iii) measures of the rubber-hand illusion, and its psychophysical correlates; and (iv) instability in temporal-lobe processing. In addition, the current evidence suggests that previous tasks have not been sensitive enough to reveal such important differences. As a consequence, the tasks which have been developed as part of this project for measuring concepts like cortical hyperexcitabiity, perspective-taking, and the rubber-hand illusion have led to a significant contribution that will have a large impact on the field of research. As well as making important contributions to scientific theory, the present project will also lead to important methodological improvements in the assessment of the neurocognitive correlates of the out-of-body experience and guide future research in the field. Findings from the project have been published in major international peer-reviewed neuroscience journals and more publications are currently being reviewed.

Title:
Evidence for elevated cortical hyperexcitability and its association with out-of-body experiences in the non-clinical population: new findings from a pattern-glare task

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Individuals with no history of neurological or psychiatric illness can report hallucinatory Out-of-Body Experiences (OBEs) and display elevated scores on measures of temporal-lobe dysfunction (Braithwaite et al., 2011). However, all previous investigations of such biases in non-clinical populations are based on indirect questionnaire measures. Here we present the first empirical investigation that a non-clinical OBE group is subject to pattern-glare, possibly as a result of cortical hyperexcitability (Wilkins et al., 1984). Fifty-nine students at the University of Birmingham viewed a series of square-wave gratings with spatial frequencies of approximately .7, 3 and 11 cycles-per-degree, both black/white and of contrasting colours. The illusions and discomfort reported when viewing gratings with mid-range spatial frequency have been hypothesized to reflect cortical hyperexcitability (Wilkins, 1995; Huang et al., 2003). Participants also completed the Cardiff Anomalous Perception Scale (CAPS: Bell et al., 2006) which included experiential measures of disruptions in 'Temporal-lobe Experience'. Participants who reported OBEs also reported significantly more visual illusions/distortions and significantly greater discomfort as a result of viewing the mid-frequency gratings. There were no such differences with respect to gratings with relatively lower or higher spatial frequency. The OBE group also produced significantly elevated scores on the CAPS measures of Temporal-lobe Experience, relative to controls. Collectively, the results are consistent with there being a neural 'vulnerability' in the cortices of individuals pre-disposed to some hallucinations, even in the non-clinical population.

An out-of-body experience (OBE) can be defined as “an experience in which a person perceives the world from a location outside their physical body”. Previously, research has indicated that these experiences reflect a temporary breakdown in typically stable egocentric body-based processing and multi-sensory integration (Blanke et al., 2005). The consequence of this is a disintegration of the bodily ‘self’ in space. In addition to OBEs, kindred hallucinations like “sensed-presence experiences” (SPE) – are also very common in non-clinical samples. Both are thought to reflect temporary disorders in body processing. Here we present preliminary findings from the first investigation of electrodermal activity from hallucinating OBEers and those who report SPEs (relative to controls) during the induction of a rubber-arm illusion. This task has been shown to be a useful and reliable measure of embodiment and multi-sensory integration. We present evidence for a new psychophysiological component of the electrodermal response underlying the induction of the rubber-hand illusion – that appears to occur principally with the existence and strength of the illusion. Specifically, we show that a DC shift emerges and precedes the report of the rubber-arm illusion in those that experience the illusion and that this component is stronger for those who report stronger illusions and those who are prone to body-based hallucinations (OBEs / SPEs). This component is severely attenuated or absent in those who do not report the illusion. In addition, there was some evidence that electrodermal responses to a threat to the rubber-arm were heightened for those reporting OBE experiences.
