The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

Effective response inhibition is crucial for daily functioning. Behavioural inhibition can be assessed using the Stop Signal Task (SST), which requires coordinated activation across a complex network of brain regions, ultimately modulating corticospinal excitability (CSE). Importantly, CSE is not only modulated by excitatory drive but also by intracortical inhibitory processes such as short intracortical inhibition (SICI), which reflects the inhibitory activity of the GABAA receptors within the primary motor cortex. This review examines a series of studies exploring CSE changes, measured through Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) applied online, i.e., during SST performance. We mainly focused on the temporal dynamics of CSE and SICI during the SST across healthy and clinical populations, highlighting differences between task-related and unrelated muscles, examining both global and selective modulations in proactive and reactive versions of the SST. Our discussion addresses the methodological and theoretical considerations involved in recording CSE online and questions the SST's effectiveness in accurately capturing inhibitory processes. Additionally, we analyse findings from motor-related disorders in clinical populations to identify specific abnormalities in CSE modulation and their underlying neural mechanisms. By summarizing the existing literature, we aim to offer a comprehensive view of the temporal dynamics of CSE, identifying key factors and methodologies that influence CSE modulation. This review seeks to prompt future directions in cognitive neuroscience research and potential clinical applications.

ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
Humans can extract, imagine, and synchronize to a regular beat from complex rhythms. Rhythm perception relies on top-down predictive mechanisms rather than fixed stimulus–response mappings. The motor system supports such temporal prediction even without movement, with the premotor cortex (PMC) proposed as a key source of auditory timing predictions.
AIMS
The causal role, spatial specificity, and connectivity of the PMC in beat-based timing remain unclear. This project addresses these issues by combining behavioral and neurophysiological methods to examine the causal contribution and functional organization of the PMC during rhythm perception and imagery.
METHODS
Study I applied online repetitive TMS over right rostral and caudal dorsal PMC (dPMC), Supplementary motor area (SMA=, pre-SMA, and a sham site to test topographical and hemispheric specificity in beat perception. Study II assessed the causal role of dPMC and SMA in beat imagery. Study III combined TMS with EEG to investigate dPMC excitability and its influence on auditory processing.
RESULTS
Stimulation of the right caudal dPMC selectively disrupted beat perception and imagery, with effects limited to the right hemisphere and strongest within individuals with lower auditory imagery ability. TMS–EEG results showed that higher right dPMC excitability predicted enhanced neural responses to perceived or imagined strong-beat positions, consistent with top-down modulation of auditory processing.
CONCLUSIONS
These findings provide converging evidence that the right caudal dPMC functions as a core hub for motor-based temporal prediction, shaping rhythmic perception and imagery. More broadly, they support theoretical accounts of rhythm as an active predictive process emerging from interactions between perception, action, and internal models of time.

Motor inhibition is the ability to suppress inappropriate motor responses. Dual-site transcranial magnetic stimulation studies suggest that the right inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG) can inhibit the primary motor cortex (M1), but it remains unclear whether inducing plasticity along this pathway affects motor inhibition. To address this issue, we used cortico-cortical paired associative stimulation (ccPAS) in healthy participants and assessed behavioral and electrophysiological markers of inhibition. In two sessions, we administered a ccPAS protocol to boost rIFG-M1 connections via Hebbian-like plasticity (ccPAS-rIFG-M1) and a reverse-order protocol (ccPAS-M1-rIFG) as a control. Consistent with well-documented inter-individual variability in response to brain stimulation, we divided participants into higher- and lower-sensitivity groups based on the progressive increase in motor excitability during ccPAS-rIFG-M1. Behavioral performance in the Go-NoGo task did not change as a function of ccPAS. However, independently of the ccPAS protocol, higher-sensitivity participants maintained an efficient proactive inhibitory strategy over time, whereas lower-sensitivity participants displayed increased response readiness at the expense of inhibitory control, suggesting stable individual differences rather than direct effects of stimulation. Furthermore, electrophysiological findings revealed that, following ccPAS-rIFG-M1, higher-sensitivity individuals showed a state-dependent increase of rIFG inhibitory influence over M1 only when viewing NoGo-cues. No comparable modulation was found for Go-cues, in lower-sensitivity individuals, or after ccPAS-M1-rIFG. These findings indicate that ccPAS-rIFG-M1 selectively modulates rIFG-M1 inhibitory interactions in a state- and sensitivity-specific manner, supporting a specific involvement of the targeted circuit in motor inhibition and linking individual plasticity capacity to stable differences in proactive inhibitory control.
