Towards a replicable formula for significant 'I Ching' outcomes

To replicate and extend Houran and Lange's (2012) 'I Ching' study, we investigated whether stronger psi differences occur for experimenters and participants with higher variance on the perceptualpersonality variables of Transliminality and Paranormal Belief (New Age Philosophy). We formed four Participant/Experimenter groups (N = 15 pairs each) based on scores for both Transliminality and Paranormal Belief: High-Participant/High-Experimenter; High- Participant/Low-Experimenter; Low-Participant/High-Experimenter, and Low-Participant/Low-Experimenter. Working with their designated experimenters, participants selected 16 of 64 hexagramdescriptor pairs (with corresponding hexagram), based on their emotional or cognitive states of mind. Three coins were thrown six times to generate a hexagram. A "hit" was observed when 1 of the 16 hexagrams matched the generated hexagram (thus, PMCE = .25). The overall hit rate on the variable 'First Hexagrams' was 34 out of 60 (i.e., 56.7%), which exceeds chance (p < .001). Of the four groups, the hit rate on First Hexagrams was highest for the High-High condition (13 hits out of 20 [65%], p < .001). However, the observed hit rates for First Hexagram in the other three conditions occurred essentially at chance levels. Statistically significant main effects for Participants and for Experimenters were also found, although both effects are moderated by a powerful Participant Experimenter interaction effect. The hit rate of the High/High condition was significantly higher compared to the Low/Low, Low/High, and High/Low combinations, which are indistinguishable among themselves.

OBJECTIVES:
Past studies of intuition (information processing without conscious reasoning) have often confused this construct with psi (paranormal cognition). Thus, experimental and computerbased studies tend to be limited in their ability to assess and quantify several competing origins for intuitive perceptions. We aimed to test whether intuitive thinking is an unusual form of welldefined cognitive processes or whether psi could be a contributing variable to transliminal and reasoning processes as suggested by previous research.
METHODS:
A convenience sample of hospitality executives (N = 50) responded both “intuitively” (spontaneous) and “cognitively” (reasoned) to a set of narratives via a computerized task (Houran, Lange & Lange, submitted) that presented hypothetical situations that were conducive to intuitive thinking. Also embedded in the computerized task was a test of psi, thereby allowing correlations between psi targets and the two sets of responses. Covariates were Sex and scores on Transliminality and Paranormal Belief (New Age Philosophy and Traditional Paranormal Beliefs).
RESULTS:
Results indicated that intuitive responses were related as predicted to Transliminality and Paranormal Belief. Further, and most importantly, intuitive responses could not be entirely explained in terms of a conventional “weighting” cognitive process inherent to many other contexts of decision making.
CONCLUSIONS:
The preliminary results are consistent with the hypothesis that intuitive thinking is a form of unconscious information processing and this process may – at times at least -- utilize sources of information that derive from either cognitive weighting or arguably a psi component.
DISCUSSION:
Rather than being synonymous with psi, intuition seems best explained as an experienced-based phenomenon that is improved by thin mental boundaries (high transliminality) and perhaps a need for personal control. For those with this latter profile, psi may be an additional source of information to be used in forming a final “gut decision.”

We tested whether intuition paralleled well-defined cognitive processes or whether psi could be a contributing variable as suggested by previous research. A convenience sample of hospitality executives (N = 62) responded both intuitively(spontaneous) and cognitively (reasoned) to a set of narratives via a computerized questionnaire that presented hypothetical situations that were conducive to intuitive thinking. Also embedded in the computerized task was a test of psi, thereby allowing correlations between a psi target and the two sets of responses. Covariates included Sex, Transliminality and Paranormal Belief (New Age Philosophy and Traditional Paranormal Belief). No Sex effects were found. Chance-level results on hit rate were observed, although hit rate did show patterns suggesting that some variables promote person-conduciveness to psi. Scores on Transliminality significantly and positively predicted scores on intuitive thinking, which in turn were significantly related to hit rate. New Age Philosophy was moderately correlated with Transliminality and intuitions, as might be expected, but it had no relation to hit rate. Most importantly, intuitive responses could not be entirely explained in terms of a conventional ‘weighting’ cognitive process inherent in many other contexts of decision-making. Thus, we found mixed support for our idea that inherently novel, spontaneous and ambiguous situations (i.e. conducive to intuitive thought) overcome participants’ lower levels of Belief and Transliminality levels.

Social psychologist Wasney de Almeida Ferreira (Ferreira, 2013) recently reported an unusual set of anomalous experiences with the dead that he deliberately induced via an internal attention state. Only one such episode was detailed, and its content and thematic progression compared favourably to the progression of transliminal experiences as documented in the hierarchical (Rasch scale) content of the Revised Transliminality Scale (Lange, Thalbourne, Houran, & Storm, 2000). The findings suggest that Ferreira’s psychical experiences may be dramatic examples of psychological content accessed and released through transliminal processes, a hypothesized mechanism inherent in anomalous experiences regardless of a psychological or parapsychological nature.

ABSTRACT:
We tested the use of Latent Semantic Analysis in predicting perceptualpersonality variables known to mediate the interpretation of ambiguous stimuli. An online sample of 588 respondents viewed a set of three iconic images one at a time. Respondents’ verbal impressions of illustrations of the Mona Lisa, Giza Sphinx, and Rodin’s Thinker significantly predicted
low vs. high scores on age, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness (p <.05). When the Rasch Outfit of respondents’ answers was used to define low vs. high categories, the semantic coordinates of their textual answers successfully predicted age, Extraversion, and Transliminality. The percentage of correct classifications did not exceed 65%, but they gain in importance by the fact that this reflects the findings’ generalizability, rather than the values reached upon convergence on the training set. The findings lend support for pursuing the use of computerized content analysis of free responses in psychological assessment.

This present study on the Chinese book of divination, the I Ching, is the fourth in a series of six studies using a particular standardized testing approach. Given that there are 64 readings in the book (corresponding to so-called ‘hexagrams’), the participant is asked to select 16 hexagram descriptor-pairs that match the statement “Lately, or right now, I feel . . .” The participant then throws three coins six times to produce an outcome hexagram which, if it matches one of the 16 pre-selections, is deemed a ‘hit’. Previous I Ching studies (Storm, 2001b; Storm & Thalbourne, 1998-1999; 2001a,b) report significant hexagram hit-rates, but the samples were comprised mainly of university students and no previous tests had focussed on the general public. In this replication study (N = 200), to explore the generality of the findings, and for comparative purposes, 100 members of the general public and 100 students were tested. Both authors tested half of each sub-sample to see if there was an experimenter effect. To determine predictor variables, the 16PF (Russell & Karol, 1994), the Revised Transliminality Scale, two sheep-goat questions, two ‘states-of-mind’ questions, a pro attitude questionnaire, and Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale were administered. The two sheep-goat questions correlated significantly with number of changing lines. Pro Attitude correlated significantly with second-hexagram hitting. Hexagram hit-rates were not significant. No experimenter effects were found. Some significant psychological correlates of transliminality were replicated. The cumulative record across four I Ching studies shows hexagram hitting to be a marginally significant effect.

We critically evaluate Stokes’s arguments that spontaneous cases are valuable for proving the ontological reality of paranormal
phenomena. Currently, ‘psi’ and ‘paranormal’ have no explanatory value, but rather are rhetorical devices that merely rename
“unexplained or anomalous” experiences or observations. Stokes’s (2017) view of seeing two polarised agendas is misinformed, or at least anachronistic; added to that is his mistaken assumption that spontaneous case studies (which he sees as unambiguous) would be superior to conventional studies involving repetitious procedures (e.g., sampling, experimentation). However, we assert that both approaches are important, and any gaps can be bridged. In particular, a broad review of salient studies suggests that spontaneous cases of anomalous experience are reasonably common, structured and predictable in
onset. Thus, they have the potential to inform and reinforce experiments and quantitative models, which collectively aim to build a true explanation for anomalous experiences and outcomes with the ultimate goal of achieving a cumulative theory of human consciousness. Lastly, several methodological or analytical approaches to spontaneous cases and qualitative data are proposed and discussed that can advance these goals.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Based on a review and meta-analyses of empirical literature in parapsychology, Mossbridge and Radin (2018) argued for anomalous replicable effects that suggest the possibility of precognitive ability or retrocausal phenomena. However, these conclusions are refuted on statistical and theoretical grounds—the touted effects are neither meaningful, interpretable, nor even convincingly replicable. Moreover, contrary to assertions otherwise, the possibility of authentic retrocausation is discredited by modern theories in physics. Accordingly, Mossbridge and Radin’s interpretations are discussed in terms of misattribution biases that serve anxiolytic functions when individuals confront ambiguity, with potential reinforcement from perceptual–personality variables such as paranormal belief. Finally, we argue that research in human consciousness should be multidisciplinary, and notably, leverage informed investigators in the physical sciences to advance truly valid and cumulative theory building.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The concept of transliminality (“a hypothesized tendency for psychological material to cross thresholds into or out of consciousness”) was anticipated by William James (1902/1982), but it was only recently given an empirical definition by Thalbourne in terms of a 29-item Transliminality Scale. This article presents the 17-item Revised Transliminality Scale (or RTS) that corrects age and gender biases, is unidimensional by a Rasch criterion, and has a reliability of .82. The scale defines a probabilistic hierarchy of items that address magical ideation, mystical experience, absorption, hyperaesthesia, manic experience, dream interpretation, and fantasy proneness. These findings validate the suggestions by James and Thalbourne that some mental phenomena share a common underlying dimension with selected sensory experiences (such being overwhelmed by smells, bright lights, sights, and sounds). Low scores on transliminality remain correlated with “tough mindedness” in on Cattell 16PF test, as well as “self-control” and “rule consciousness,” whereas high scores are associated with “abstractedness” and an “openness to change” on that test. An independent validation study confirmed the predictions implied by our definition of transliminality. Implications for test construction are discussed.

Abstract/Results: We conducted a large-scale online survey to examine ‘‘situational-enchantment’’ as a
special mental state that is conducive of psi-related or exceptional human experiences (EHEs). A
convenience sample of 707 online respondents completed measures of Transliminality,
Paranormal Belief (New Age Philosophy vs Traditional Paranormal Beliefs), EHEs, and
Enchantment. After establishing the reliability and scalability of all measures via Rasch scaling,
respondents were randomly assigned to either a Training set (n ¼ 471) or Validation set (n ¼ 236).
Competitive testing with path analysis on the Training set found that the best-fitting model
affirmed our prediction of a self-reinforcing loop between Enchantment and EHEs (psi), which
was mediated by a link between Transliminality and Paranormal Belief, and this solution was
accompanied by excellent model fit. This same pattern was fully replicated in the Validation set,
thereby establishing the empirical stability of our process model. The results support the
hypothesis that enchantment collectively acts as an aftereffect, example of, and catalyst for EHEs
and putative psi. We discuss the findings relative to clinical contexts and future research.

Abstract:
Background. Transliminality (TLIM) and Paranormal Belief (PB) are mutually-reinforcing state variables that facilitate psi. Mental boundaries and psi thus ostensibly fluctuate per situational influences, which might include the experience of psychological “enchantment’. Aims. Related studies tested whether enchantment fosters psi in receptive people. Method. Study 1 measured TLIM, PB, Enchantment, and Psi in a sample of 707 online respondents. Study 2 used a paranormal tour vs control session to confirm the proposed “TLIM × PB × Enchantment” formula for psi via a pre-registered field study (n = 33) of enchanted vs dis-enchanted settings. Ad-Hoc Studies 3 and 4 designed measures of environment variables that may promote enchantment or psi and correlated these with three participants’ anomalous experiences during an extended immersive exercise at a ‘haunted’ site. Results. Study 1: path analysis affirmed a loop between Enchantment and Psi, mediated by a link between TLIM and PB. Study 2: TLIM and PB scores, and the (dis)enchanted conditions significantly shifted overall correct hit rates on the psi task. Study 3: a beta “app” produces time-synced outputs that can be correlated with an embedded measure of anomalous experiences. Study 4: factor analysis showed that a space or setting is defined by its Affordance, Ambiguity, Presence, and Sentimentality. The immersive exercise found that the participants’ anomalous experiences were mostly congruency in content and location. Gestalt ratings significantly correlated with these experiences and prior witness reports. Conclusions. Enchantment is a special mental state conducive for psi, and this relationship is mediated by principles of environmental psychology.

By assessing interrelationships among variables within a specified theoretical framework, network analysis (NA) provides nuanced insights into how associations between psychological constructs are related to outcome measures. Noting this, the authors used NA to examine connections between Paranormal Belief, cognitive-perceptual factors (Schizotypy, Transliminality, and Manic-Depressive Experience), and well-being (Life Satisfaction, Meaning in Life, Somatic Complaints, Perceived Stress, Depressive Symptoms). Data derived from a sample of 3,090 participants (mean age = 50.30, standard deviation = 15.20; 46.5% male, 53.1% female) who completed standardised self-report measures capturing the study constructs online. Transliminality, Unusual Experiences (positive schizotypy), and Depressive Experience demonstrated high expected influence centrality. This indicated that these factors were the most strongly connected and influential in the network. Moreover, Transliminality was a connecting variable between Paranormal Belief, positive schizotypy, and psychopathology. Depressive Experience bridged the relationship between Transliminality and well-being. The conceptual implications of these outcomes are discussed with regards to better understanding relationships between Paranormal Belief, cognitive-perceptual factors, and well-being.

Evaluation of prior research suggests that belief in the paranormal is more likely to be associated with negative psychological functioning, when presented alongside cognitive-perceptual factors that askew thinking and insight. The current study examined this notion using a sample of 3,084 participants (1,382 males, 1,693 females, nine non-binary). Respondents completed self-report measures assessing Paranormal Belief, Transliminality, psychopathology-related characteristics (Schizotypy and Manic-Depressive Experience), and well-being (Perceived Stress and Somatic Complaints). Responses were analysed via correlations and moderation. Paranormal Belief correlated positively with Transliminality, psychopathology-related measures, Perceived Stress, and Somatic Complaints. Moderation analyses revealed that Transliminality and psychopathology-related variables (i.e., the Unusual Experiences and Cognitive Disorganisation subscales of schizotypy, and Manic-Depressive Experience) interacted with Paranormal Belief in complex ways and were allied to higher scores on negative well-being outcomes. This indicated that within paranormal believers, Transliminality and specific psychopathology-related variables in combination predicted susceptibility to negative well-being outcomes.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

The relationship between transliminality, hypnotic and imaginative suggestibility, and other personality traits

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
To our knowledge, no study has directly examined the link between hypnotic response and the personality trait of transliminality (which is underpinned, for example, by magical ideation, mystical experience, fantasy proneness, absorption, hyperaesthesia). In order to further understand the correlates of suggestibility, the aim of the current project was to investigate whether transliminality is associated with hypnotic and imaginative suggestibility (considering: objective response, subjective response and involuntariness). Another aim was to assess the contribution of transliminality as a predictor of suggestibility when a range of previously studied personality trait measures were considered.
Participants completed: the Revised Transliminality Scale, Tellegen Absorption Scale, Creative Experiences Questionnaire, and the Dissociative Experiences Scale II. To avoid context effects, where knowledge or measurement of one trait or ability might influence measurement of another, a separate standalone study was conducted where hypnotic and imaginative (without hypnosis) suggestibility screenings were carried out in-person in small groups using the modified Carleton University Responsiveness to Suggestion Scale. The merging of these two datasets enabled the analyses.
Transliminality was weakly correlated with the imaginative suggestibility subjective response measure (r = 0.19). Likewise, weak correlations were found between transliminality and the hypnotic suggestibility response measures (objective, r = 0.21, subjective, r = 0.23, involuntariness, r = 0.24). The multiple regressions (forward selection) reflected the pattern of correlations, with no model for any of the variables, retaining more than a single significant predictor.
In summary, this study combination, avoiding context effects, shows transliminality to be a weak predictor of response to suggestion.
