Tools are manipulable objects that, unlike other objects in the world (e.g., buildings), are tightly linked to highly predictable action procedures. Neuroimaging has revealed a left-lateralized network of dorsal and ventral visual stream regions for tool-use and knowledge, but the exact role of these regions remains unclear. Moreover, studies involving actual hand actions with real tools are rare as most research to date used proxies for tool-use including presenting visual stimuli (e.g., pictures) or action simulation (e.g., pantomime). Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA) to investigate whether the human brain represents actual object-specific functional grasps with real 3D tools. Specifically, we tested if patterns of brain activity would differ depending on whether the grasp was consistent or inconsistent with how tools are typically grasped for use (e.g., grasp knife by handle rather than by its serrated edge). In a block-design fMRI paradigm, 19 participants grasped the left or right sides of 3D-printed tools (kitchen utensils) and non-tool objects (bar-shaped objects) in open loop with the right-hand. Importantly, and unknown to participants, by varying movement direction (right/left) the tool grasps were performed in either a typical (by the handle) or atypical (by the business end) manner. In addition, for each participant separate functional localizer runs were obtained to define regions of interest. MVPA showed that typical vs. atypical grasping could be decoded significantly higher for tools than non-tools in hand-selective regions of the lateral occipital temporal cortex and intraparietal sulcus. None of the body-selective, tool-selective or object-selective areas discriminated typical vs. atypical grasps with tools higher than non-tools. These results indicate that dorsal and ventral hand-selective regions contain representations of how to appropriately interact with tools and that these are evoked even when they are irrelevant to task performance.

Software programming is a complex and relatively recent human activity, involving the integration of mathematical, recursive thinking and language processing. The neural correlates of this recent human activity are still poorly understood. Error monitoring during this type of task, requiring the integration of language, logical symbol manipulation and other mathematical skills, is particularly challenging. We therefore aimed to investigate the neural correlates of decision-making during source code understanding and mental manipulation in professional participants with high expertise. The present fMRI study directly addressed error monitoring during source code comprehension, expert bug detection and decision-making. We used C code, which triggers the same sort of processing irrespective of the native language of the programmer. We discovered a distinct role for the insula in bug monitoring and detection and a novel connectivity pattern that goes beyond the expected activation pattern evoked by source code understanding in semantic language and mathematical processing regions. Importantly, insula activity levels were critically related to the quality of error detection, involving intuition, as signalled by reported initial bug suspicion, prior to final decision and bug detection. Activity in this salience network (SN) region evoked by bug suspicion was predictive of bug detection precision, suggesting that it encodes the quality of the behavioral evidence. Connectivity analysis provided evidence for top-down circuit “reutilization” stemming from anterior cingulate cortex (BA32), a core region in the SN that evolved for complex error monitoring such as required for this type of recent human activity. Cingulate (BA32) and anterolateral (BA10) frontal regions causally modulated decision processes in the insula, which in turn was related to activity of math processing regions in early parietal cortex. In other words, earlier brain regions used during evolution for other functions seem to be reutilized in a top-down manner for a new complex function, in an analogous manner as described for other cultural creations such as reading and literacy.

Violent extremism is often explicitly motivated by commitment to abstract ideals such as the nation or divine law—so-called “sacred” values that are relatively insensitive to material incentives and define our primary reference groups. Moreover, extreme pro-group behavior seems to intensify after social exclusion. This fMRI study explores underlying neural and behavioral relationships between sacred values, violent extremism, and social exclusion. Ethnographic fieldwork and psychological surveys were carried out among 535 young men from a European Muslim community in neighborhoods in and around Barcelona, Spain. Candidates for an fMRI experiment were selected from those who expressed willingness to engage in or facilitate, violence associated with jihadist causes; 38 of whom agreed to be scanned. In the scanner, participants were assessed for their willingness to fight and die for in-group sacred values before and after an experimental manipulation using Cyberball, a toss ball game known to yield strong feelings of social exclusion. Results indicate that neural activity associated with sacred value processing in a sample vulnerable to recruitment into violent extremism shows marked activity in the left inferior frontal gyrus, a region previously associated with sacred values and rule retrieval. Participants also behaviorally expressed greater willingness to fight and die for sacred versus nonsacred values, consistent with previous studies of combatants and noncombatants. The social exclusion manipulation specifically affected nonsacred values, increasing their similarities with sacred values in terms of heightened left inferior frontal activity and greater expressed willingness to fight and die. These findings suggest that sacralization of values interacts with willingness to engage in extreme behavior in populations vulnerable to radicalization. In addition, social exclusion may be a relevant factor motivating violent extremism and consolidation of sacred values. If so, counteracting social exclusion and sacralization of values should figure into policies to prevent radicalization.

The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND
It is poorly understood how the brain integrates intrinsic and extrinsic self-concepts to constitute a sense of self. It was hypothesized that the dynamic integration/segregation of functional brain networks could support a sense of self.
AIMS
To investigate how intrinsic and extrinsic self-processes and related brain networks interact to constitute a sense of self, and its association with traits of altered self-experience.
METHOD
Behavioral and fMRI data were obtained from 39 healthy participants to provide measures of implicit intrinsic and extrinsic self-processing, and of individual psychosis-relevant traits. Using graph theoretical measures of brain functional connectivity (FC), modularity and participation indices were calculated. It was tested how FC measures (i) were modulated by different levels of intrinsic and extrinsic self-relatedness induced by the fMRI task; (ii) were associated with behavioral measures of the sense of self; (iii) were associated with psychosis-relevant traits.
RESULTS
The results show that a functional integration of multiple brain subsystems (sensorimotor, default mode, memory, cognitive control, higher order cognition) supports both intrinsic and extrinsic self-processing. Increased levels of individual psychosis-like experiences were associated with the loss of hubness/decreased cross-network interactions when self-relatedness on multiple dimensions is incongruent.
CONCLUSIONS
The dynamic integration/segregation of brain networks involved in intrinsic and extrinsic self-processing supports a multidimensional sense of self. Higher levels of psychosis-relevant traits could be associated with diminished cross-network interactions, especially in situations of ambiguous self-relatedness.

It is widely accepted that unexpected sensory consequences of self-action engage the cerebellum. However, we currently lack consensus on where in the cerebellum, we find fine-grained differentiation to unexpected sensory feedback. This may result from methodological diversity in task-based human neuroimaging studies that experimentally alter the quality of self-generated sensory feedback. We gathered existing studies that manipulated sensory feedback using a variety of methodological approaches and performed activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analyses. Only half of these studies reported cerebellar activation with considerable variation in spatial location. Consequently, ALE analyses did not reveal significantly increased likelihood of activation in the cerebellum despite the broad scientific consensus of the cerebellum's involvement. In light of the high degree of methodological variability in published studies, we tested for statistical dependence between methodological factors that varied across the published studies. Experiments that elicited an adaptive response to continuously altered sensory feedback more frequently reported activation in the cerebellum than those experiments that did not induce adaptation. These findings may explain the surprisingly low rate of significant cerebellar activation across brain imaging studies investigating unexpected sensory feedback. Furthermore, limitations of functional magnetic resonance imaging to probe the cerebellum could play a role as climbing fiber activity associated with feedback error processing may not be captured by it. We provide methodological recommendations that may guide future studies.

Violent intergroup conflicts are often motivated by commitments to abstract ideals such as god or nation, so-called ‘sacred’ values that are insensitive to material trade-offs. There is scant knowledge of how the brain processes costly sacrifices for such cherished causes. We studied willingness to fight and die for sacred values using fMRI in Barcelona, Spain, among supporters of a radical Islamist group. We measured brain activity in radicalized individuals as they indicated their willingness to fight and die for sacred and non-sacred values, and as they reacted to peers' ratings for the same values. We observed diminished activity in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), inferior frontal gyrus, and parietal cortex while conveying willingness to fight and die for sacred relative to non-sacred values—regions that have previously been implicated in calculating costs and consequences. An overlapping region of the dlPFC was active when viewing conflicting ratings of sacred values from peers, to the extent participants were sensitive to peer influence, suggesting that it is possible to induce flexibility in the way people defend sacred values. Our results cohere with a view that ‘devoted actors’ motivated by an extreme commitment towards sacred values rely on distinctive neurocognitve processes that can be identified.

Willingness to fight and die (WFD) has been developed as a measure to capture willingness to incur costly sacrifices for the sake of a greater cause in the context of entrenched conflict. WFD measures have been repeatedly used in field studies, including studies on the battlefield, although their neurofunctional correlates remain unexplored. Our aim was to identify the neural underpinnings of WFD, focusing on neural activity and interconnectivity of brain areas previously associated with value-based decision-making, such as the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC). A sample of Pakistani participants supporting the Kashmiri cause was selected and invited to participate in an functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) paradigm where they were asked to convey their WFD for a series of values related to Islam and current politics. As predicted, higher compared to lower WFD was associated with increased ventromedial prefrontal activity and decreased dorsolateral activity, as well as lower connectivity between the vmPFC and the dlPFC. Our findings suggest that WFD more prominently relies on brain areas typically associated with subjective value (vmPFC) rather than integration of material costs (dlPFC) during decision-making, supporting the notion that decisions on costly sacrifices may not be mediated by cost-benefit computation.

Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is a rare condition characterized by visual impairment associated with complex visual hallucinations in elderly people. Although studies suggested that visual hallucinations may be caused by brain damage in the visual system in CBS patients, alterations in specific brain regions in the occipital cortex have not been studied. Functional connectivity during resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI; without hallucinations) in CBS patients, has never been explored. We aimed to investigate brain structural and functional changes in a patient with CBS, as compared with late blind (LB) and normally sighted subjects. We employed voxel-based morphometry and cortical thickness analyses to investigate alterations in grey matter characteristics, and rs-fMRI to study changes in functional brain connectivity. Decreased grey matter volume was observed in the middle occipital gyrus and in the cuneus in the CBS patient, and in the middle occipital gyrus and in the lingual gyrus within LB subjects, compared to their respective control groups. Reductions in cortical thickness in associative and multimodal cortices were observed in the CBS patient when comparing with LB subjects. The precuneus exhibited increased functional connectivity with the secondary visual cortex in the CBS patient compared to the controls. In contrast, LB patients showed decreased functional connectivity compared to sighted controls between the DMN and the temporo-occipital fusiform gyrus, a region known to support hallucinations. Our findings suggest a reorganization of the functional connectivity between regions involved in self-awareness and in visual and salience processing in CBS that may contribute to the appearance of visual hallucinations.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS
Studying the human brain response to shifts in perception provides an insight on the neuronal processes which underlie perceptual decision. Visual ambiguous stimuli are a powerful tool to investigate such processes, since perception varies over time despite the physically unchanging properties of stimuli.
A classic example of an ambiguous visual stimulus is when two moving gratings are superimposed to form a plaid. The perception of a moving plaid switches back and forth between two interpretations: it can be perceived as a single surface with coherent motion or as two surfaces sliding one over the other (incoherent motion). It has been suggested that this phenomenon arises from competition between opposing percepts, which might be influenced by mechanisms such as neuronal adaptation, inhibition, and memory. Current perceptual stability models consider bistable perception as a result of the interaction between these mechanisms, but the relative contribution of each one is still under debate.
METHODS
Here, using fMRI, EEG and behavioral approaches, we explore how each of these contributes to perceptual decision during bistable visual perception of moving plaids, taking into account the possible interaction between them. We hypothesized that the crucial role of adaptation in perceptual bistability arises from its influence on other mechanisms, such as perceptual persistence (a special form of short term visual memory) and inhibition.
Based on a set of three experiments, we first tested for distinct levels of adaptation during visual motion perceptual bistability. Then, we investigated how such adaptation competes with persistence to influence perceptual experience. Finally, we tested whether cross-inhibitory effects occur between bistable percepts of a moving plaid, elicited by adaptation.
RESULTS
We found that adaptation can contribute to regulating percept duration during visual bistability, with distinct weights, depending on the type of percept. Our results provide further evidence for continuous competition between adaptation and persistence, the first leading to negative and the second to positive hysteresis, with a relevant role for perceptual experience. Finally, we demonstrated, both at the behavioral and neuronal level, that inhibition across neural populations plays a key role in the disambiguation of moving plaids.
CONCLUSION
Taken together, our findings add to the understanding of how the visual system achieves perceptual decisions based on interactions between low and high-level neuronal mechanisms, one based on adaptation and the second on short-term visual memory (persistence).

Software programming is a complex and relatively recent human activity, involving the integration of mathematical, recursive thinking and language processing. The neural correlates of this recent human activity are still poorly understood. Error monitoring during this type of task, requiring the integration of language, logical symbol manipulation and other mathematical skills, is particularly challenging. We therefore aimed to investigate the neural correlates of decision-making during source code understanding and mental manipulation in professional participants with high expertise. The present fMRI study directly addressed error monitoring during source code comprehension, expert bug detection and decision-making. We used C code, which triggers the same sort of processing irrespective of the native language of the programmer. We discovered a distinct role for the insula in bug monitoring and detection and a novel connectivity pattern that goes beyond the expected activation pattern evoked by source code understanding in semantic language and mathematical processing regions. Importantly, insula activity levels were critically related to the quality of error detection, involving intuition, as signalled by reported initial bug suspicion, prior to final decision and bug detection. Activity in this salience network (SN) region evoked by bug suspicion was predictive of bug detection precision, suggesting that it encodes the quality of the behavioral evidence. Connectivity analysis provided evidence for top-down circuit “reutilization” stemming from anterior cingulate cortex (BA32), a core region in the SN that evolved for complex error monitoring such as required for this type of recent human activity. Cingulate (BA32) and anterolateral (BA10) frontal regions causally modulated decision processes in the insula, which in turn was related to activity of math processing regions in early parietal cortex. In other words, earlier brain regions used during evolution for other functions seem to be reutilized in a top-down manner for a new complex function, in an analogous manner as described for other cultural creations such as reading and literacy.

Perception of biological motion is important for daily life activities, such as non-verbal communication. Understanding how the visual system perceives biological motion, even from point-light displays depicting human activity, remains a neuroscientific challenge. The mechanisms that allow us to interpret biological motion from the local motion of individual dots, which is characteristic for the local motion of parts of living beings and can be defined as life motion, are largely unknown. The functional separation into distinct neural stages of the correlates of the perception of life motion from perception of global motion of a coherent body bearing multiple articulated joints remains to be achieved. We hypothesized that life motion processing can be separated, by using a single dot motion paradigm featuring the biomechanical details of local realistic motion of a single joint. Equipped with such a paradigm, we studied the neural correlates of life motion perception. Low level visual areas, such as the human hMT+ complex, are known to respond to simple and variable motion patterns. To investigate if this region also responds to biological motion paths that a given center of gravity undergoes through space, we manipulated the constraints imposed by gravity and inertial forces on acceleration/deceleration patterns of foot motion, by mapping realistic foot movement on a single dot motion stimulus. We therefore developed an event-related fMRI experiment to study the neural basis of life motion perception from a single moving dot embedding the kinematic properties of local feet motion that only contained local properties. We could isolate more low-level (life motion) aspects of biological motion processing from aspects related to social perception of animated shapes. We hypothesized that such local biological motion computation is achieved in hMT+ by assessing, using BOLD fMRI, the neural correlates underlying the decision the decision whether local instantaneous acceleration patterns were truly biological or not. We found that hMT+ is sensitive to signals that encode life motion (local biological motion), which places this region in the initial biological motion processing network.

PURPOSE
In this study, our aim was to examine neural correlates of cognitive–behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I).
METHODS
It was investigated to what extent successfully tailored CBT-I modified the neural activity pattern observed before the intervention, when two insomnia patients were exposed to idiosyncratic stimuli pertaining to past/present and future concerns in an fMRI experiment.
RESULTS
Our findings suggested that successful CBT-I seems to normalize brain overactivity. This finding is enhanced by the visible attenuation of activity in brain regions implicated in self-referential processing and by the significant activation within visual areas across all experimental conditions.
CONCLUSION
It is likely that psychological treatment changes the brain’s function in insomnia. However, studies with larger sample sizes are needed to establish solid evidence.

Major methodological advancements have been recently made in the field of neural decoding, which is concerned with the reconstruction of mental content from neuroimaging measures. However, in the absence of a large-scale examination of the validity of the decoding models across subjects and content, the extent to which these models can be generalized is not clear. This study addresses the challenge of producing generalizable decoding models, which allow the reconstruction of perceived audiovisual features from human magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data without prior training of the algorithm on the decoded content. We applied an adapted version of kernel ridge regression combined with temporal optimization on data acquired during film viewing (234 runs) to generate standardized brain models for sound loudness, speech presence, perceived motion, face-to-frame ratio, lightness, and color brightness. The prediction accuracies were tested on data collected from different subjects watching other movies mainly in another scanner. Substantial and significant (QFDR<0.05) correlations between the reconstructed and the original descriptors were found for the first three features (loudness, speech, and motion) in all of the 9 test movies (R¯=0.62, R¯ = 0.60, R¯ = 0.60, respectively) with high reproducibility of the predictors across subjects. The face ratio model produced significant correlations in 7 out of 8 movies (R¯=0.56). The lightness and brightness models did not show robustness (R¯=0.23, R¯ = 0). Further analysis of additional data (95 runs) indicated that loudness reconstruction veridicality can consistently reveal relevant group differences in musical experience. The findings point to the validity and generalizability of our loudness, speech, motion, and face ratio models for complex cinematic stimuli (as well as for music in the case of loudness). While future research should further validate these models using controlled stimuli and explore the feasibility of extracting more complex models via this method, the reliability of our results indicates the potential usefulness of the approach and the resulting models in basic scientific and diagnostic contexts.

Cognition can influence choices by modulation of decision-making processes. This cognitive regulation is defined as processing information, applying knowledge, and changing preferences to consciously modulate decisions. While cognitive regulation of emotions has been extensively studied in psychiatry, few works have detailed cognitive regulation of decision-making. Stress may influence emotional behavior, cognition, and decision-making. In addition, the brain regions responsible for decision-making are sensitive to stress-induced changes. Thus, we hypothesize that chronic stress may disrupt the ability to regulate choices. Herein, we used a functional magnetic resonance imaging task where fourteen control and fifteen chronically stressed students had to cognitively upregulate or downregulate their craving before placing a bid to obtain food. We found that stressed participants placed lower bids to get the reward and chose less frequently higher bid values for food. Nevertheless, we did not find neural and behavioral differences during cognitive regulation of craving. Our outcomes revealed that chronic stress impacts decision-making after cognitive regulation of craving by reducing the valuation of food rewards but not cognitive modulation itself. Importantly, our results need further validation with larger sample sizes.

The challenging computational problem of perceiving dynamic faces "in the wild" goes unresolved because most research focuses on easier questions about static photograph perception. This literature conceptualizes face representation as a dissimilarity-based "face space", with axes that describe the dimensions of static images. Some versions express positions in face space relative to a central tendency (norm). Are facial movements represented like this? We tested for representations that accord with an a priori hypothesized motion-based face space by experimentally manipulating faces' motion-based dissimilarity. Because we caricatured movements, we could test for representations of dissimilarity from a motion-based norm. Behaviorally, participants perceived these caricatured expressions as convincing and recognizable. Moreover, as expected, caricature enhanced perceived dissimilarity between facial expressions. Functional magnetic resonance imaging showed that occipitotemporal brain responses, including face-selective and motion-sensitive areas, reflect this face space. This evidence converged across methods including analysis of univariate mean responses (which additionally exhibited norm-based responses), repetition suppression and representational similarity analysis. This accumulated evidence for "representational geometry" shows how perception and visual brain responses to facial dynamics reflect representations of movement-based dissimilarity spaces, including explicit computation of distance from a norm movement.

Purpose
Insomnia is a highly prevalent disorder with important implications for health and well-being. It is well known the “hyperarousal hypothesis” in insomnia which assumes that patients present high levels of activation, in particular, cortical arousal.
Methods
A preliminary resting-state fMRI experiment comprising two non-medicated insomnia patients was performed to evaluate whether cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) changes the activation patterns of the most known resting-state brain networks, particularly, the default-mode network (DMN).
Results
As main results, we found modifications in the anterior component of the DMN, in the visual network, and in the auditory network after successful CBT-I. The most notable result was a decreased activity in the medial prefrontal cortex from pre- to post-intervention.
Conclusion
Findings from this preliminary study suggest that psychological treatment may translate modifications in neural activity of insomnia patients.

BACKGROUND
The subjective experience of speech seems to be governed by predicting the sensory consequences of own voice (OV) production. However, existing studies fail to account for the effects of emotional salience in speech and how it affects prediction and prediction errors when what we hear is not what we intended.
AIMS
The current project investigated the effect of change in OV quality on sensory feedback to self-generated and externally generated vocalizations, combining EEG and fMRI.
METHOD
Twenty-six healthy participants vocalized the syllable “ah” with neutral, angry, and pleasure intonation. These vocalizations were morphed to generate neutral-to-angry and neutral-to-pleasure continua. In the EEG study, they listened to OV step wise changing from fully neutral to fully emotional via button-press (active) and listening (passive) conditions. In the fMRI study, participants heard the OV, an uncertain-voice (UV) and other-voice (OTV) in active and passive conditions.
RESULTS
N1 suppression was reduced in response to changes in OV that represented an increase in emotional quality. In the fMRI study, the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) displayed characteristic feedback-error processing: its activity increased as divergence from expected OV quality increased; the anterior superior temporal gyrus (STG) displayed characteristic motor-induced suppression of OV.
CONCLUSIONS
Sensory suppression to self-generated OV, reflected in N1 amplitude modulations, varies as a function of the perceived salience of auditory feedback that does not match the prediction, substantiating the link between emotion and sensory prediction.
Two different roles of error-monitoring and identity-attribution in OV perception were identified: IFG activity increases with more divergence from qualities of OV, whereas the STG is involved in self-attribution via motor-induced suppression of expected voice stimuli. Future studies should investigate if alterations in these processes are related to variability in hallucination predisposition.

The minimal neural correlate of the conscious state, regardless of the neural activity correlated with the ever-changing contents of experience, has still not been identified. Different attempts have been made, mainly by comparing the normal waking state to seemingly unconscious states, such as deep sleep or general anesthesia. A more direct approach would be the neuroscientific investigation of conscious states that are experienced as free of any specific phenomenal content. Here we present serendipitous data on content-free awareness (CFA) during an EEG-fMRI assessment reported by an extraordinarily qualified meditator with over 50,000 h of practice. We focused on two specific cortical networks related to external and internal awareness, i.e., the dorsal attention network (DAN) and the default mode network (DMN), to explore the neural correlates of this experience. The combination of high-resolution EEG and ultrafast fMRI enabled us to analyze the dynamic aspects of fMRI connectivity informed by EEG power analysis. The neural correlates of CFA were characterized by a sharp decrease in alpha power and an increase in theta power as well as increases in functional connectivity in the DAN and decreases in the posterior DMN. We interpret these findings as correlates of a top-down-initiated attentional state excluding external sensory stimuli and internal mentation from conscious experience. We conclude that the investigation of states of CFA could provide valuable input for new methodological and conceptual approaches in the search for the minimal neural correlate of consciousness.

Most neuroimaging experiments that investigate how tools and their associated actions are represented in the brain use visual paradigms where objects and body parts are displayed as 2D images and no real movements are performed. These studies have discovered a tight relationship between hand- and tool-selective areas in LOTC and IPS, thought to reflect action-related processing but this claim has never been directly investigated. Here we addressed this by testing whether independently visually-defined category-selective areas were sensitive to real action properties involving 3D tools. Specifically, using multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA), we tested if brain activity patterns would differ depending on whether grasping was consistent or inconsistent with how tools are typically grasped for use (e.g., grasp knife by the handle rather than its serrated edge). In a block-design fMRI paradigm, participants grasped the left or right sides of 3D tools (kitchen utensils) and 3D non-tools (bar-shaped objects) with the right-hand. Importantly, and unknown to participants, by varying movement direction (right/left) the tool grasps were performed in either a typical (by the handle) or atypical (by the functional-end) manner. We found that representations about whether a 3D tool is being grasped appropriately for use were decodable from hand-selective areas (LOTC-Hand and IPS-Hand), but not from tool-, object-, or body-selective areas, even if partially overlapping. These findings indicate that representations of how to grasp tools for use are automatically evoked in visual regions specialised for representing the human hand.
