The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

Most neuroimaging experiments that investigate how tools and their actions are represented in the brain use visual paradigms where tools or hands are displayed as 2D images and no real movements are performed. These studies discovered selective visual responses in occipito-temporal and parietal cortices for viewing pictures of hands or tools, which are assumed to reflect action processing, but this has rarely been directly investigated. Here, we examined the responses of independently visually defined category-selective brain areas when participants grasped 3D tools (N=20; 9 females). Using real action fMRI and multi-voxel pattern analysis, we found that grasp typicality representations (i.e., whether a tool is grasped appropriately for use) were decodable from hand-selective areas in occipito-temporal and parietal cortices, but not from tool-, object-, or body-selective areas, even if partially overlapping. Importantly, these effects were exclusive for actions with tools, but not for biomechanically matched actions with control non-tools. In addition, grasp typicality decoding was significantly higher in hand than tool-selective parietal regions. Notably, grasp typicality representations were automatically evoked even when there was no requirement for tool use and participants were naïve to object category (tool vs non-tools). Finding a specificity for typical tool grasping in hand-, rather than tool-, selective regions challenges the long-standing assumption that activation for viewing tool images reflects sensorimotor processing linked to tool manipulation. Instead, our results show that typicality representations for tool grasping are automatically evoked in visual regions specialised for representing the human hand, the brain’s primary tool for interacting with the world.

Self-voice attribution can become difficult when voice characteristics are ambiguous, but functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) investigations of such ambiguity are sparse. We utilized voice-morphing (self-other) to manipulate (un-)certainty in self-voice attribution in a button-press paradigm. This allowed investigating how levels of self-voice certainty alter brain activation in brain regions monitoring voice identity and unexpected changes in voice playback quality. FMRI results confirmed a self-voice suppression effect in the right anterior superior temporal gyrus (aSTG) when self-voice attribution was unambiguous. Although the right inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) was more active during a self-generated compared to a passively heard voice, the putative role of this region in detecting unexpected self-voice changes during the action was demonstrated only when hearing the voice of another speaker and not when attribution was uncertain. Further research on the link between right aSTG and IFG is required and may establish a threshold monitoring voice identity in action. The current results have implications for a better understanding of the altered experience of self-voice feedback in auditory verbal hallucinations.

Neuromodulation techniques such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) are routinely used for treating neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, and for enhancement of cognitive abilities. Recently, their effectiveness in modulating behavioral and neural responses has been questioned. Here we use excitatory and inhibitory tDCS prior to a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment to show that neural responses for an area's preferred stimuli depend on the polarity of stimulation. This is an important, yet overlooked, data point in demonstrating the effectiveness of these stimulation techniques. Our results show that response preferences in the target area are dependent on the polarity of the tDCS session preceding the fMRI experiment these preferences are less distinct in the cathodal than in the anodal session. As such, we show unequivocally that tDCS modulates neural responses. This result is of the utmost importance in demonstrating the effectiveness of tDCS for clinical and experimental purposes. Daily variations in the environment have shaped life on Earth, with circadian cycles identified in most living organisms. Likewise, seasons correspond to annual environmental fluctuations to which organisms have adapted. However, little is known about seasonal variations in human brain physiology. We investigated annual rhythms of brain activity in a cross-sectional study of healthy young participants. They were maintained in an environment free of seasonal cues for 4.5 d, after which brain responses were assessed using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while they performed two different cognitive tasks. Brain responses to both tasks varied significantly across seasons, but the phase of these annual rhythms was strikingly different, speaking for a complex impact of season on human brain function. For the sustained attention task, the maximum and minimum responses were located around summer and winter solstices, respectively, whereas for the working memory task, maximum and minimum responses were observed around autumn and spring equinoxes. These findings reveal previously unappreciated process-specific seasonality in human cognitive brain function that could contribute to intra-individual cognitive changes at specific times of year and changes in affective control in vulnerable populations.

To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

A robust neural fingerprint of cinematic shot-scale

This article provides evidence for the existence of a robust “brainprint” of cinematic shot-scales that generalizes across movies, genres, and viewers. We applied a machine-learning method on a dataset of 234 fMRI scans taken during the viewing of a movie excerpt. Based on a manual annotation of shot-scales in five movies, we generated a computational model that predicts time series of this feature. The model was then applied on fMRI data obtained from new participants who either watched excerpts from the movies or clips from new movies. The predicted shot-scale time series that were based on our model significantly correlated with the original annotation in all nine cases. The spatial structure of the model indicates that the empirical experience of cinematic close-ups correlates with the activation of the ventral visual stream, the centromedial amygdala, and components of the mentalization network, while the experience of long shots correlates with the activation of the dorsal visual pathway and the parahippocampus. The shot-scale brainprint is also in line with the notion that this feature is informed among other factors by perceived apparent distance. Based on related theoretical and empirical findings we suggest that the empirical experience of close and far shots implicates different mental models: concrete and contextualized perception dominated by recognition and visual and semantic memory on the one hand, and action-related processing supporting orientation and movement monitoring on the other.

As neural signals travel through the visual hierarchy, spatial precision decreases and specificity for stimulus features increases.1, 2, 3, 4 A similar hierarchy has been found for laminar processing in V1, where information from the thalamus predominantly targets the central layers, while spatial precision decreases and feature specificity increases toward superficial and deeper layers.5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 This laminar processing scheme is proposed to represent a canonical cortical microcircuit that is similar across the cortex.11,18, 19, 20, 21 Here, we go beyond early visual cortex and investigate whether processing of numerosity (the set size of a group of items) across cortical depth in the parietal association cortex follows this hypothesis. Numerosity processing is implicated in many tasks such as multiple object tracking,22 mathematics,23, 24, 25 decision making,26 and dividing attention.27 Neurons in the parietal association cortex are tuned to numerosity, with both a preferred numerosity tuning and tuning width (i.e., specificity).28, 29, 30 We quantified preferred numerosity responses across cortical depth in the parietal association cortex with ultra-high field fMRI and population receptive field-based numerosity modeling.1,28,31 We find that numerosity responses sharpen, i.e., become increasingly specific, moving away from the central layers. This suggests that the laminar processing scheme for numerosity processing in the parietal cortex is similar to primary visual cortex, providing support for the canonical cortical microcircuit hypothesis beyond primary visual cortex.

(1) The effects of intensive mental training based on meditation on the functional and structural organization of the human brain have been addressed by several neuroscientific studies. However, how large-scale connectivity patterns are affected by long-term practice of the main forms of meditation, Focused Attention (FA) and Open Monitoring (OM), as well as by aging, has not yet been elucidated. (2) Using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and multivariate pattern analysis, we investigated the impact of meditation expertise and age on functional connectivity patterns in large-scale brain networks during different meditation styles in long-term meditators. (3) The results show that fMRI connectivity patterns in multiple key brain networks can differentially predict the meditation expertise and age of long-term meditators. Expertise-predictive patterns are differently affected by FA and OM, while age-predictive patterns are not influenced by the meditation form. The FA meditation connectivity pattern modulated by expertise included nodes and connections implicated in focusing, sustaining and monitoring attention, while OM patterns included nodes associated with cognitive control and emotion regulation. (4) The study highlights a long-term effect of meditation practice on multivariate patterns of functional brain connectivity and suggests that meditation expertise is associated with specific neuroplastic changes in connectivity patterns within and between multiple brain networks.

High doses of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive component of cannabis, have been shown to have anxiogenic effects. Additionally, THC effects have been shown to be modulated by genotype, including the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs1130233 at the protein kinase AKT1 gene, a key component of the dopamine signalling cascade. As such, it is likely that epigenetic methylation around this SNP may affect AKT gene expression, which may in turn impact on the acute effects of THC on brain function. We investigated the genetic (AKT1 rs1130233) and epigenetic modulation of brain function during fear processing in a 2-session, double-blind, cross-over, randomized placebo-controlled THC administration, in 36 healthy males. Fear processing was assessed using an emotion (fear processing) paradigm, under functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Complete genetic and fMRI data were available for 34 participants. THC caused an increase in anxiety and transient psychotomimetic symptoms and para-hippocampal gyrus/amygdala activation. Number of A alleles at the AKT1 rs1130233 SNP, and percentage methylation at the CpG(11-12) site, were independently associated with a greater effect of THC on activation in a network of brain regions including left and right parahippocampal gyri, respectively. AKT1 rs1130233 moderation of the THC effect on left parahippocampal activation persisted after covarying for methylation percentage, and was partially mediated in sections of the left parahippocampal gyrus/hippocampus by methylation percentage. These results may offer an example of how genetic and epigenetic variations influence the psychotomimetic and neurofunctional effects of THC.

Low-level states of consciousness are characterized by disruptions of brain activity that sustain arousal and awareness. Yet, how structural, dynamical, local and network brain properties interplay in the different levels of consciousness is unknown. Here, we study fMRI brain dynamics from patients that suffered brain injuries leading to a disorder of consciousness and from healthy subjects undergoing propofol-induced sedation. We show that pathological and pharmacological low-level states of consciousness display less recurrent, less connected and more segregated synchronization patterns than conscious state. We use whole-brain models built upon healthy and injured structural connectivity to interpret these dynamical effects. We found that low-level states of consciousness were associated with reduced network interactions, together with more homogeneous and more structurally constrained local dynamics. Notably, these changes lead the structural hub regions to lose their stability during low-level states of consciousness, thus attenuating the differences between hubs and non-hubs brain dynamics.

Abstract/Results: Intelligent manipulation of handheld tools marks a major discontinuity between humans and our closest ancestors. Here we identified neural representations about how tools are typically manipulated within left anterior temporal cortex, by shifting a searchlight classifier through whole-brain real action fMRI data when participants grasped 3D-printed tools in ways considered typical for use (i.e., by their handle). These neural representations were automatically evocated as task performance did not require semantic processing. In fact, findings from a behavioural motion-capture experiment confirmed that actions with tools (relative to non-tool) incurred additional processing costs, as would be suspected if semantic areas are being automatically engaged. These results substantiate theories of semantic cognition that claim the anterior temporal cortex combines sensorimotor and semantic content for advanced behaviours like tool manipulation.

Background: Patients with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) present difficulties in the cognitive regulation of emotions, possibly because of inefficient recruitment of distributed patterns of frontal cortex regions. The aim of the present study is to characterize the brain networks, and their dysfunctions, related with emotion regulation alterations observed during cognitive reappraisal in OCD.
Methods: Adult patients with OCD (n=31) and healthy controls (HC; n=30) were compared during performance of a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) cognitive reappraisal protocol. We used a free Independent Component Analysis (ICA) approach to analyze network-level alterations during emotional experience and regulation. Correlations with behavioral scores were also explored.
Results: Analyses were focused on 6 networks encompassing the frontal cortex. OCD patients showed decreased activation of the frontotemporal network in comparison with HC (F(1,58) = 7.81, p = 0.007) during cognitive reappraisal. A similar trend was observed in the left frontoparietal network (LFPN).
Conclusions: The present study demonstrates that patients with OCD show decreased activation of specific networks implicating the frontal cortex during cognitive reappraisal. These outcomes should help to better characterize the psychological processes modulating fear, anxiety, and other core symptoms of patients with OCD, as well as the associated neurobiological alterations, from a system-level perspective.

Facial emotion perception can be studied from the point of view of dynamic systems whose output may depend not only on current input but also on prior history — a phenomenon known as hysteresis. In cognitive neuroscience, hysteresis has been described as positive (perceptual persistence) or negative (fatigue of current percept) depending on whether perceptual switching occurs later or earlier than actual physical stimulus changes. However, its neural correlates remain elusive. We used dynamic transitions between emotional expressions and combined behavioral assessment with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the underlying circuitry of perceptual hysteresis in facial emotion recognition. Our findings revealed the involvement of face-selective visual areas — fusiform face area (FFA) and superior temporal sulcus (STS) — in perceptual persistence as well as the right anterior insula. Moreover, functional connectivity analyses revealed an interplay between the right anterior insula and medial prefrontal cortex, which showed to be dependent on the presence of positive hysteresis. Our results support the hypothesis that high-order regions are involved in perceptual stabilization and decision during perceptual persistence (positive hysteresis) and add evidence to the role of the anterior insula as a hub of sensory information in perceptual decision-making.

Numerosity is the set size of a group of items. Numerosity perception is a trait shared across numerous species. Numerosity-selective neural populations are thought to underlie numerosity perception. These neurons have been identified primarily using electrical recordings in animal models and blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in humans. Here we use electrical intracranial recordings to investigate numerosity tuning in humans, focusing on high-frequency transient activations. These recordings combine a high spatial and temporal resolution and can bridge the gap between animal models and human recordings. In line with previous studies, we find numerosity-tuned responses at parietal sites in two out of three participants. Neuronal populations at these locations did not respond to other visual stimuli, i.e. faces, houses, and letters, in contrast to several occipital sites. Our findings further corroborate the specificity of numerosity tuning of in parietal cortex, and further link fMRI results and electrophysiological recordings.

Background
Stress may influence emotional behaviour, cognition, and decision-making. In addition, the brain regions responsible for decision-making are sensitive to stress-induced changes. Thus, chronic stress may disrupt the ability to cognitively regulate choices.
On contrary, neuromodulation strategies can successfully increase neural activity in prefrontal-parietal regions, which will help in increasing cognitive reappraisal capacities. Among the different neuromodulation techniques, neurofeedback (NFB) is certainly the less invasive approach, although further research is warranted to fully develop its anticipated possibilities in intervention contexts. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-neurofeedback (NFB) is a non-invasive approach which allows real-time monitoring and self-regulation of regional brain activity. However, it lacks generalizability to ecological contexts, and the costs of such an intervention prevent its wide use. Electroencephalography (EEG)-NFB, by contrast, overcomes these limitations, but lacks the regional resolution of fMRI.
In this work we intended to explore the effects of chronic stress on cognitive regulation of decision making and to develop a neurofunctional intervention protocol using fMRI-EEG-NFB to regulate the levels of stress.
Aims
1. To study the impact of chronic stress on cognitive regulation of decisions using an fMRI task.
2. To develop a neurofunctional intervention protocol based on the combined use of fMRI- and EEG-NFB for increasing cognitive reappraisal capacities in subjects with different levels of perceived stress.
Method
Task 1
We used a fMRI task where fourteen control and fifteen chronically stressed students had to cognitively upregulate or downregulate their craving before placing a bid to obtain food. The task consisted of two parts: a pre-scan rating task that provided us with a measure of the baseline value for food, and an in-scan bidding and regulation task that measured the food value under the influence of regulation. Subjects also filled the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI).
Task 2
The protocol consists of a combined fMRI (Siemens 3T) and EEG (Brain Vision BrainAmp MR 64 channels) acquisition, including a resting state; a localizer cognitive reappraisal task; NFB runs; and another resting-state. During the cognitive reappraisal task, images are shown for the conditions ‘observe’ (neutral images), ‘experience’ (negative images letting their feelings flow), and ‘regulate’ (negative images to be regulated). During the NFB runs, when they successfully regulate their emotions (increasing prefronto-parietal network activation), the image slowly disappears. Subjects also filled the PSS.
Results
Task 1
The stress group revealed higher levels of perceived stress. No statistically significant differences were found for BAI and BDI between groups. Stressed participants placed lower bids to get the reward and chose less frequently higher bid values for food. Nevertheless, we did not find neural and behavioral differences during cognitive regulation of craving. We found a main effect of the cognitive regulation condition in the left hemisphere in the superior (Brodmann area 22) and middle temporal gyrus (Brodmann area 21), the rolandic operculum, and the precentral gyrus (Brodmann area 6).
Task 2
After NFB training we found increased functional connectivity within the salience network (middle/inferior frontal and precentral gyrus). These connectivity values were negatively correlated with the effort self-reported during NFB (Spearman r = -0.834, p = 0.008). PSS scores ranged between 11 and 29 (N=16).
Conclusions
Our results revealed that chronic stress impacts decision-making after cognitive regulation of craving by reducing the valuation of food rewards but not cognitive modulation itself. We also described a technique to successfully regulate cognitive stress appraisal.

BACKGROUND
Cognitive training (CT) has been widely implemented and it is currently accepted as the most promising method to alleviate cognitive decline. Several techniques have been combined with CT to explore the synergetic effects and, recently, a beneficial effect has been shown after the combination with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS).
AIMS
Here we combined multiple sessions CT with tDCS to assess verbal episodic memory improvement in healthy elderly subjects, compared with sham and a wait list group.
METHOD
We tested whether CT and excitatory tDCS over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (lDLPFC) or right cerebellar cortex (rCC) facilitates verbal episodic memory, compared with sham stimulation and a wait list control group. CT was applied daily for 1 hour, after 20 minutes of tDCS, over 12 sessions. Performance on memory and other cognitive tasks was evaluated at baseline and postintervention, using behavioral and neuroimaging tools. Participants were healthy elderly, = 60 years, right-handed, without history of neuropsychiatric disease.
RESULTS
Data suggest an improvement in verbal episodic memory tasks in the groups receiving CT + tDCS. Interestingly, there is a greater improvement and consistency in the group receiving CT+ tDCS in the rCC. Neuroimaging data supports the results from the neuropsychological assessment. Specifically, tDCS over the right cerebellum + CT increased the functional connectivity in the left hippocampus.
CONCLUSIONS
These data suggest that CT and neuromodulation hold promise as a means to enhance cognitive functions in healthy elderly. Greater light is also shed on the role of the cerebellar cortex in cognitive processing.

BACKGROUND
Sufficient repetition of similar contextual information leads to automatic behaviours. The ability to inhibit actions, thoughts or emotions may also run under automatic control. Yet, little is known about how inhibition becomes automatic and the underlying neurobiology.
AIMS
We will test the presence of a brain network behind automatic inhibition. Also, how emotional cues influences on automatic inhibition mechanisms.
METHOD
On 3 experiments, a modified Go/NoGo learning task (automatic inhibition task) assessed learning of stimulus-stop associations throughout days of training. Formation and expression of automatic inhibition was assessed by comparing first vs last behavioural sessions. Subjects had to learn to emit or withhold a keypress upon the presentation of a primary object picture (6 neutral images: 3 go vs 3 no-go) with varying feedback probabilities. Reversal and slips of action tests were performed on the first and last sessions to assess automatic behaviour. In 3 experiments, behavioural, emotional cues and neuroimaging tools (fMRI and TMS) were exploited.
RESULTS
After considerable training, significant better performance was seen across go and no-go learning trials and harder to suppress when asked to revert automatic actions. Emotional cues did not influence mean average on automatic inhibition but exploring single-trial changes showed negative images enlarged costs to revert automaticity. The neural circuitry responsible for the automatic inhibition engaged the SMA, putamen, caudate, substantia nigra and subthalamic nucleus. Finally, cortical excitability across different stages of learning (analysis of changes in MEPs) did not reveal significant time-related disparity between go and no-go trials compared to baseline trials.
CONCLUSIONS
We have defined a neural circuitry associated to automatic inhibition that is influenced by emotional cues. This behaviour and associated brain responses may be of value to neuropsychiatric conditions where automatic control is impaired.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

The question of whether physical pain and vicarious pain have some shared neural substrates is unresolved. Recent research has argued that physical and vicarious pain are represented by dissociable multivariate brain patterns by creating biomarkers for physical pain (Neurologic Pain Signature, NPS) and vicarious pain (Vicarious Pain Signature, VPS) respectively. In the current research, the NPS and two versions of the VPS were applied to three fMRI datasets (one new, two published) relating to vicarious pain which focused on between-subject differences in vicarious pain (Datasets 1 and 3) and within-subject manipulations of perspective taking (Dataset 2). Results show that (1) NPS can distinguish brain responses to images of pain versus no-pain and to a greater extent in vicarious pain responders who report experiencing pain when observing pain, (2) neither version of the VPS mapped on to individual differences in vicarious pain and the two versions differed in their success in predicting vicarious pain overall. This study suggests that the NPS (created to detect physical pain) is, under some circumstances, sensitive to vicarious pain and there is significant variability in VPS measures (created to detect vicarious pain) to act as generalizable biomarkers of vicarious pain.

A commonly established protocol for the administration of open-label placebos (OLPs)—placebos honestly prescribed—emphasizes the necessity of ingesting the pill for the placebo effect to manifest. The current functional magnetic resonance imaging study used a novel approach to OLP administration: the imaginary intake of an OLP pill for regulating disgust. A total of 99 females were randomly allocated to one of three groups that either swallowed a placebo pill (OLP Pill), imagined the intake of a placebo pill (Imaginary Pill) or passively viewed (PV) repulsive and neutral images. The imaginary pill reduced reported disgust more effectively than the OLP pill and was also perceived as a more plausible method to reduce emotional distress. Relative to the OLP pill, the imaginary pill lowered neural activity in a region of interest involved in disgust processing: the pallidum. No signifcant differences in brain activation were found when comparing the OLP pill with PV. These fndings highlight that imagining the intake of an OLP emerged as a superior method for regulating feelings of disgust compared to the actual ingestion of a placebo pill. The study’s innovative approach sheds new light on the potential of placebo interventions in emotion regulation.
