Lucid dreaming, nightmares, and sleep paralysis: Associations with reality testing deficits and paranormal experience/belief
Publication year: 2020
URL:
https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.00471/full
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Focusing on lucid dreaming, this paper examined relationships between dissociated experiences related to rapid eye movement (REM) sleep (lucid dreaming, nightmares, and sleep paralysis), reality testing, and paranormal experiences/beliefs. The study comprised a UK-based online sample of 455 respondents (110 males, 345 females, Mean age = 34.46 years, SD = 15.70), who had all previously experienced lucid dreaming. Respondents completed established self-report measures assessing control within lucid dreaming, experience and frequency of nightmares, incidence of sleep paralysis, proneness to reality testing deficits (Inventory of Personality Organization subscale, IPO-RT), subjective experience of receptive psi and life after death (paranormal experience), and paranormal belief. Analysis comprised tests of correlational and predictive relationships between sleep-related outcomes, IPO-RT scores, and paranormal measures. Significant positive correlations between sleep and paranormal measures were weak. Paranormal measures related differentially to sleep indices. Paranormal experience correlated with lucid dreaming, nightmares, and sleep paralysis, whereas paranormal belief related only to nightmares and sleep paralysis. IPO-RT correlated positively with all paranormal and sleep-related measures. Within the IPO-RT, the Auditory and Visual Hallucinations sub-factor demonstrated the strongest positive associations with sleep measures. Structural equation modeling indicated that Auditory and Visual Hallucinations significantly positively predicted dissociated experiences related to REM sleep, while paranormal experience did not. However, paranormal experience was a significant predictor when analysis controlled for Auditory and Visual Hallucinations. The moderate positive association between these variables explained this effect. Findings indicated that self-generated, productive cognitive-processes (as encompassed by Auditory and Visual Hallucinations) played a significant role in conscious control and awareness of lucid dreaming, and related dissociative sleep states (sleep paralysis and nightmares).

Trauma or transcendence? The relationship between near-death experiences and dreaming
Publication year: 2024
URL:
https://dx.doi.org/10.1037/drm0000278
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Near-death experiences (NDEs) are exceptional states of consciousness reported by many individuals who come close to death. Unusual dream phenomena such as more intense and vivid dreams, higher dream recall, and increased lucid dreaming have been purported to occur after NDEs, however, a comprehensive assessment of the dream experiences and attitudes of NDE survivors remains unexplored. Moreover, it remains unknown whether anomalous dream experiences stem from the actual NDE or the traumatic experience of coming close to death. In this study, 138 NDE survivors, 45 participants who experienced a life-threatening event but without NDE, and 129 participants who had never come close to death completed a quantitative questionnaire assessing trauma symptoms and a range of dreamrelated variables. The NDE group reported significantly more lucid dreams, creative and problem-solving dreams, precognitive dreams, and out-of-body experiences during sleep than both other groups of participants. Furthermore, these experiences appeared to be primarily related to the NDE rather than trauma symptomology. Findings continue to suggest a relationship between nonordinary states and expanded awareness more broadly—whether experienced during sleep or wakefulness—offering further insights into the phenomenon of consciousness in general.

Final report - Neuroimaging of lucid dreaming
Publication year: 2024
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
Background
The neurobiology of dreaming is still poorly understood. In particular neuroimaging of dreaming is sparse, for both regular REM sleep dreaming and lucid dreaming, as its rarity and instability make neuroscientific experimentation challenging. Lucid dreaming is of interest in particular due to its potential application in nightmare disorder.
Aims
The project aimed to elucidate the neural correlates of different dream experiences with combined EEG/fMRI, paving the way towards real-time neurofeedback approaches to induce lucid dreaming.
Method
Healthy participants with regular dream recall were recorded in the late night to early morning hours with combined EEG/fMRI, leveraging new developments in acquisition sequences, active noise cancelling and acoustic shielding. In addition, large-scale fMRI datasets acquired during resting wakefulness were analyzed to investigate trait brain correlates of dream experiences.
Results
Alternative acquisition sequences and active noise canceling yielded at best incremental advantages for REM sleep imaging, with the scanner noise and fixed supine sleeping position still preventing many participants reaching REM sleep in the scanner. At the end of the project period, sleep of n=24 participants were successfully recorded, with n=10 participants reaching non-lucid REM sleep. Also, neuroimaging analysis of trait dream recall turned out to be more difficult than suggested in previous literature, with nightmare frequency showing an association only with cerebellar regions, but not predicted regions such as the amygdala or medial prefrontal cortex.
Conclusions
Functional neuroimaging of different dream experiences remains challenging. These difficulties with different analysis strategies restricts options for the direct application of this imaging modality in lucid dream induction strategies or their application in nightmare disorder on a broader scale. Nevertheless, incremental progress is encouraging for the basic neuroscience of dreaming.

Future dreams of electric sheep: Case study of a possibly precognitive lucid dreamer with AI scoring
Publication year: 2025

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A precognitive dream is a dream about seemingly unpredictable future events that nonetheless seem to be predicted by the dream. It has been most convincingly replicated in two case studies using a single skilled precognitive dreamer (Maimonides studies by Krippner et al., 1971, 1972). Instead of repeating these original studies with another skilled precognitive dreamer, here we set out to determine whether an individual with another unusual dreaming skill – that of entering a lucid dream state almost at will and sketching images seen in that state upon awakening – could become a precognitive dreamer with practice. We pre-registered a formal experiment with two sets of 5 trials. In each trial, the dreamer recorded the contents of his lucid dream in a transcript, emailed the transcript to a skeptical target-selector, who then used a random number generator to select a target, sent the URL for the target to the dreamer, and forwarded both the target URL and the dream transcript to the analyst, who stored the date, dream transcript, and target together in a database. We used three methods of judging: a pre-registered but flawed judging method using two skilled human judges (producing 3 hits out of 10), an exploratory method drawing on unskilled human judges (producing 1 hit out of 10), and an exploratory method comparing judging performance across five different text embedding models within large language AI models (producing 5 hits out of 10). AI-judged methods offered clear evidence for precognition, including a dream-target match conservatively calculated to be highly unlikely to be obtained by chance (p < 1.2×10?5), but a confirmatory experiment is required before drawing firm conclusions. Further, several of the accurate transcript/target pair matches made by the top-performing text embedding models matched those of the skilled human judges, suggesting that the AI method captured human sensibilities and expanded on them. The differences in accuracy among the embedding models have implications for the selection of AI models for future free-response experiments and can begin to give shape to a future of AI participation in screening, training, performance, and analysis in multiple free-response contexts.

“Outside the matrix.” Dreaming after near-death experiences: A qualitative analysis
Publication year: 2025

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Near-death experiences (NDEs) have been consistently associated with a range of psychophysical aftereffects, including those related to sleep and dreaming. Enhanced dream recall, more vivid dreams, increased lucid dreaming, as well as changed attitudes toward sleep and dreaming have been previously reported; however, existing data are predominantly quantitative. The following study applied a qualitative phenomenological approach to achieve deeper and more complex insights into the structure, characteristics, and meanings associated with dream experiences following NDEs. Thirteen individuals who had experienced an NDE took part in a series of semistructured interviews to explore their dreaming life, including perceived changes after the NDE. Three main themes were constructed. “Dreaming beyond boundaries” describes psi-adjacent experiences that encompassed past-life and precognitive dreams, lucid dreaming, out-of-body-experiences, and dreams with the deceased. “Dysphoric dreams” outlines dreams consisting of extreme negative imagery and affect that directly or symbolically captured elements of the NDE or associated near-death event. “Dreams as teachers” describes a heightened reverence for “dream intelligence” as both a mirror and a compass for guiding personal growth and development. Findings reflect broader shifts in participants’ personal identity, spirituality, and perceptions of reality, a process often initiated by the NDE itself and then maintained and enhanced through dream states. Future research may wish to focus on integration resources for experiencers, while continuing to explore the intersection of NDEs and dreaming, particularly in relation to their potential to inform nonlocal models of consciousness.
